Chapter 25 Who is he?

The carriage happened to be passing by the restaurant.

Jiang Shuyue followed Qiu Ju's gaze and saw Xiao Jingzhao mount his horse.

Bathed in the morning light, the man's cold aura softened, replaced by an air of arrogance that made him seem unapproachable.

"Mom, who's the bastard! Did he bully you? When you grow up, Sui Sui will beat him up."

"puff!"

Qiuju couldn't help but burst out laughing. Young Master Suisui was too clever; he even knew he was too young to beat his opponent.

As Sui Sui spoke, she stood up and leaned out of the train window to look.

As soon as Sui Sui showed her face, Jiang Shuyue hugged her tightly and said, "Sui Sui, be good. It was a misunderstanding. There was no jerk."

She couldn't let Sui Sui really remember that person; Sui Sui had an exceptionally good memory.

What if he really is that person? What if we actually meet him one day?

It is against human ethics and morality for a son to beat his father; such a thing should never be allowed to be done by a son.

Jiang Shuyue held Sui Sui in her arms and gently stroked his smooth little face.

With a serious expression, he said, "Son, if one day a powerful and influential person tells you that he is your father, would you go with him?"

Sui Sui had never seen his mother so nervous before. He shook his head without hesitation: "No, Sui Sui wants to stay with his mother. Sui Sui wants to study and practice martial arts to protect his mother."

"My son is so good, Mommy will never leave Sui Sui." Jiang Shuyue's eyes welled up with tears as she hugged Sui Sui tightly, as if someone were trying to take her son away.

"Mother, didn't you say that Father had already sacrificed his life for the country on the frontier and that he wouldn't come back?"

Qiuju understood her mistress's worries perfectly; those who could attend the banquet at the princess's residence were either rich or noble.

She echoed Jiang Shuyue's words: "Young Master, your mother was talking about a hypothetical situation, which means it didn't happen."

...

A morning breeze blew by, and Xiao Jingzhao sneezed.

"Master, what's wrong?"

With his master busy all day, Xiang Song was worried about Xiao Jingzhao's health.

"It's nothing, let's go."

Xiao Jingzhao pushed off with his legs, and the horse beneath him galloped up.

The sound of horses' hooves rang out, and in the blink of an eye, the group quickly left Jiang Shuyue and her companions behind.

Jiang Shuyue unfolded the map. To get to Laiyang, she would have to pass through Jingning and Jingjiang.

Although ancient maps were not as detailed as modern maps, distances were still relatively accurate.

Jiang Shuyue roughly estimated that she would arrive at the outskirts of Laiyang City in about two more days.

Along the way, there were many taverns, and refugees who continued their journey could be seen from time to time.

At noon, while having lunch at a tavern, Jiang Shuyue noticed that some vagrants were begging along the street. The innkeeper did not drive them away and even instructed the waiter to take out the leftover food from the customers and distribute it to the vagrants.

Su Huai Ren couldn't help but sigh, "The Prince of Yannan is benevolent. The land he governs has a human touch, which is many times better than the incompetent emperor in the capital."

"Who says otherwise? The idea of not allowing refugees and beggars into the capital was initially proposed by the Empress's family, who said that the refugees would disrupt the lives of the capital's nobles."

"It's an eyesore for them! That bastard actually issued an edict: if the city guards let any refugees into the capital, their heads will be cut off and hung on the city gate."

With the emperor far away and no one to worry about, the two of them were just short of hurling even more offensive insults.

When Lin Miaoshou spoke of the Empress's family, a barely perceptible hint of hatred flashed in her eyes.

"Hey! Old Lin, how do you know so much about this? Not many people know the specific contents of the imperial edict," Su Huai-ren asked belatedly.

Lin Miaoshou was slightly taken aback, then chuckled awkwardly.

"It's no secret. I once treated a soldier guarding the city, and he told me about it."

"real!"

Su Huai-ren was skeptical.

Seeing that Lin Miaoshou looked serious, he didn't press the matter further.

Two days later, at dusk, Jiang Shuyue and her group arrived at the outskirts of Laiyang City.

The scene before her eyes surprised her greatly; she had thought that the number of refugees would decrease once she arrived in Laiyang.

Tents were set up along both sides of the road, and in addition to the government officials distributing porridge, many merchants dressed up as porridge providers were also distributing porridge.

Looking around, all that could be seen were ragged refugees, with a constant stream of people going to collect porridge.

Several officials sat in a row, registering and compiling records, while a clerk beside them buried himself in his work, writing furiously.

Lin Miaoshou glanced at the long queue and said to Su Huai Ren, "The government registration is to count the number of refugees. We don't need government assistance, so we don't need to register."

Su Huai-ren looked up at the sky; it was still possible to enter the city at this time.

Su Jin drove the carriage behind, seeing Lin Miaoshou continuing to drive the carriage forward.

He looked around, then turned back and said in a low voice, "Mother, we still have some money. We can rent a small courtyard to stay in and then figure out what to do next."

"You can discuss it with your father later, and I'll listen to you both."

In this era, the husband and son usually make the decisions at home, and Aunt Su is no exception. Su Jin is a man of his own mind, and he is more assertive than his father in doing things.

Upon entering the city, Lin Miaoshou immediately headed north onto a street.

"Hey, Lao Lin, where are you going?" Su Huai-ren asked, puzzled, as the carriage headed towards a small alley behind the street.

“A friend of mine has a spare courtyard here, which is perfect for us to stay in,” Lin Miaoshou said casually, but Su Huai-ren felt that something was off.

The carriage stopped in front of a gate without a plaque, and Lin Miao reached out and turned the rusty lock.

Su Huai-ren then realized what was happening and quickly went to stop him: "Old Lin! Isn't it a bit... inappropriate for us to just break in!"

Lin Miaoshou scoffed: "Old Su, if you had an empty house, and I had nowhere else to go, and I happened to walk into your empty house, would you let me break down the door?"
