Chapter 3 The Secret in the Earring

Jiang Jiaojiao scolded the servant impatiently: "What's all the fuss about? What are you yelling about?"

She just sent her maids and servants to look for her cousin, but the gatekeeper said he hadn't seen the young master return.

Later, she heard that her father had changed his mind and expelled Jiang Shuyue from the family, so she came to the hanging flower gate to wait.

She was not satisfied with this result; how could she let Jiang Shuyue leave comfortably?

Hearing the shouts, Jiang Zhengming and Yang rushed over.

Of course, Yang came to see how Jiang Shuyue left in such a sorry state.

Jiang Shuyue paused slightly and looked at the servant.

It's already autumn, and the servant is sweating profusely; something big must have happened.

She pieced together the events and realized that Yang's scheme was not hard to see through.

"Master, Madam, something terrible has happened! Young Master was harassing a maid at the Princess's residence and his leg was broken by the Princess's guards."

Upon hearing the servant's words, Madam Yang swayed, and Granny Wang quickly reached out to support her.

The pain in her back made Jiang Shuyue even weaker, but she forced herself to turn slightly.

A mocking smile curled at the corner of her lips. There wasn't much she could do now, but planting thorns was still an option.

Looking at Granny Wang expressionlessly, he said, "If he had listened to you and gone back to the Yang family to find Dongmei, would his leg have been spared from being broken?"

"Young Miss! When...when did I ask him to find Dongmei?"

"Enough!" Madam Yang shouted sternly, her gaze towards Granny Wang completely different now.

Granny Wang shrank back in fright. Dongmei was her granddaughter, who worked as a maid in the Yang family.

She gave the young master that kind of medicine, how could she let him go back to find Dongmei? Wouldn't that ruin Madam's plan?

"Young lady, hurry up! The coachman is already waiting outside. Once you're out this door, don't call yourself the eldest daughter of the Jiang family anymore," the butler urged, holding a brown paper package.

The master and servant left the Minister's mansion without looking back, and helped each other into the carriage.

As soon as they stepped out of the city gate, Qiuju saw that Jiang Shuyue's forehead was covered in cold sweat.

She said anxiously, "Miss, does the wound hurt a lot? If Granny Wang hadn't been urging me so much, I would have changed your clothes and applied medicine to the wound before leaving."

“Silly girl, how could the physician of the manor give us the medicine? He still needs to rely on the Minister’s manor to make a living.”

"Old Lady Wang had you beaten. Your injury is on your buttock, isn't it? Quickly lie down on the small couch."

When Jiang Shuyue saw Qiuju kneeling in the carriage organizing her belongings, she knew that the girl's bottom must have been beaten so badly that she couldn't sit up anymore.

Qiuju's eyes welled up with tears: "Miss, your back injury is more serious than mine. Don't rub against the carriage wall. You lie on the small couch, and I'll kneel down."

Jiang Shuyue couldn't argue with Qiuju. The carriage was too small, so in the end she told Qiuju not to organize the clothes in the bundles and to let her lie on the two bundles.

At night, the driver lit the kerosene lantern, which moved along the official road, its flickering light like a ghost wandering in the night.

The master and servant were both in pain and hungry, and before they knew it, they had both fallen into a deep sleep.

"Miss Jiang, we've arrived at the estate. Get out of the carriage quickly, I'm in a hurry to get back to the Minister's residence to report," the coachman shouted, no longer referring to himself as a servant in front of her.

Qiu Ju slid off the package with a start and saw Jiang Shuyue open her eyes.

She glanced outside and said, "Miss, please slow down. Let me unload the packages from the carriage before I come up to help you."

Jiang Shuyue struggled to get up from the small couch; the bumpy ride of the night had made her body ache even more.

The master and servant struggled to get off the carriage. The old women in the courtyard looked at them with strange eyes as if they were monsters, and not one of them came up to help carry the bundle.

The woman in charge whispered with the coachman for a while, then saw him off before slowly walking over.

"Come with me. Since you're not a young lady, don't act like one."

The old woman's tone was unfriendly. She glanced at the two of them with her triangular eyes, then walked inside on her own.

"You can stay here and recover from your injuries. In a few days, you'll be working in the fields with everyone. We don't keep useless people on the estate."

The head maid walked to the door, then turned back to Qiuju and said, "Go to the kitchen to get your own meals. Breakfast time has already passed today, go again at noon."

Qiuju looked at the simple house, which was even more dilapidated than the houses where the servants of the Minister's mansion lived.

There was only a wooden bed, a table, and two rickety chairs in the room.

There was a broken wooden box in the corner of the room, and there wasn't even a wardrobe.

As Qiuju heard the old woman's footsteps fade into the distance, tears welled up in her eyes: "Miss, they've gone too far! They're making us live in a dilapidated house and not feeding us. You haven't had a meal in two days."

Jiang Shuyue wasn't the original owner of this body, so she didn't feel too aggrieved; instead, she felt like she had survived a catastrophe.

She asked, "Qiuju, did you bring your sewing kit?"

Qiuju untied a package, took out a sewing kit, and placed it on the table.

Jiang Shuyue took the embroidery needle and pricked it into the side of her thumb.

Seeing blood beading on the young lady's finger, Qiuju exclaimed, "Miss, please don't hurt yourself!"

"Silly girl, I have a fever. There's no medicine here, so I have to have my blood drawn to bring the fever down."

Qiuju said with some lingering fear, "This servant thought that Miss was thinking of doing something rash."

Jiang Shuyue touched Qiu Ju's forehead; thankfully, she was alright.

Jiang Shuyue looked at the bare bed and said to Qiuju, "We can't just sit here and wait to die. Go and get two bowls of water. We'll drink them and then go out to find some herbs."

"Miss, when did you learn to recognize herbs?" Qiuju asked, puzzled.

"I've read so many books, I'll naturally recognize them. You go ahead, I'll pack the clothes."

Seeing Qiuju leave, Jiang Shuyue put the clothes from the two bundles into the broken wooden box.

Since the box couldn't be covered, she simply used the lid to store clothes and then covered it with a cloth.

Looking at the makeup box that Jiang Jiaojiao had emptied, she took off her earrings and picked up the simplest pair of white jade earrings inside.

The jade is not clear enough; it looks like there's a cloud of white mist inside, so it's obviously not of good quality.

"Just plain is fine," she quickly changed into earrings.

With a forceful push of her thumb, blood seeped out again, but a drop was quickly swallowed by the jade pendant.

Suddenly, she felt a force push her, her body lost its weight, and the scene before her eyes was completely transformed.

"Where am I? Have I somehow ended up in some remote corner again?"

Jiang Shuyue was stunned by the scene before her.

Chickens and sheep roamed on a large meadow, and a spring was bubbling away, its clear water flowing into a stream.

There are a few thatched huts beside the stream.

Looking further into the distance, all you see is a vast expanse of white.

"Why can't I see clearly? Have I transmigrated into the body of a cataract patient?" Jiang Shuyue quickly rubbed her eyes.

Upon closer inspection, it was still the same.

She looked down, and a sharp pain shot through her back, confirming that she was still that unfortunate eldest daughter of the Jiang family.

Beside the thatched cottage was a piece of land. She looked around and saw lush greenery, but she couldn't see far into the distance; it was like a fairyland.

She unconsciously touched her white jade earring and murmured, "Could this be the legendary space? Heaven has been kind to me."

Suddenly, she heard hurried footsteps and wondered how to get out.

She stumbled and found herself back in the dilapidated house.
