Su Peng loved the girl's shy yet bold flirtatious manner.
He couldn't help but reach out and pinch Caiyan's cotton-padded jacket. "You'll have to suffer for a while. Once we have some money, I'll buy her a maid, and then I'll make you my concubine."
"That way you can live openly in Tingxue Pavilion. At that time, we can do whatever we want without having to sneak around."
Caiyan forced a smile, "Thank you for making plans for me, young master. Zhao Wu and the other two are still waiting outside. I'll go and deliver the message now."
Caiyan walked a short distance and turned back to see Su Peng walking towards the east courtyard.
She took a deep breath, and her mind instantly cleared.
If you make money, you can get her a concubine, but the concubine will still be a slave, and any son she gives birth to could be taken away by the mistress.
Looking at the swirling snowflakes, a wave of sadness washed over me.
She kept asking herself, what is the point of all this hard work?
Being a slave for life was not what she wanted.
As she stepped out of the Su family's gate, a gust of cold wind swept over her. Seeing the three people shivering in the cold wind, staring at her expectantly, Caiyan suddenly had an idea.
When Zhao Wu saw Caiyan walk out looking lost and dejected, he rushed over to greet her.
"Miss Yan'er, has the young mistress agreed to let us pack up and leave?"
Caiyan looked up at the tall man who was much taller than her. The snow on his shoulders was two inches thick, and snowflakes clung to his eyelashes.
"Zhao Wu, do you want to be a slave for life?"
Seeing that Caiyan's answer was irrelevant, Zhao Wu paused for a moment before replying, "Why does Miss Yan'er ask such a question? Isn't being a slave good? At least you get to eat."
A layer of mist welled up in Caiyan's eyes, and she smiled sadly, "No, being a slave means being beaten and scolded by others. As a slave, you can't have your own private property, and you can't do whatever you want."
"This...this is true, but we..."
"This isn't the place to talk. Pack up your stall now, and I'll come to your room to find you in a bit."
Caiyan interrupted Zhao Wu and walked forward nonchalantly.
Zhao Wu: "..."
What happened?
Where is he? Has Miss Yan'er taken a liking to me?
As Zhao Wu watched Caiyan's retreating figure, he was so excited that he forgot that Caiyan was the son-in-law's concubine.
Caiyan stepped forward and relayed Jiang Jiaojiao's words to the two of them.
The short man thought he had misheard and pressed, "Miss Caiyan, what do you mean by not paying wages?"
"We only calculate the wages for the days you set up your stall. You can arrange the rest of the days yourself, or you can find work elsewhere."
After hearing Caiyan's explanation, another man shook the snow off his shoulders and stepped forward, saying, "We agreed to pay wages monthly. Since your young mistress is so untrustworthy, we might as well not do this job!"
"Yes! We shouldn't help her. It's too unfair. Let's go and ask for our wages for these few days."
"Exactly! We can all make skewers and grilled meat ourselves, why should we put up with his humiliation!"
“That’s right. In this snowy weather, even dogs don’t go out. It’s not worth it for you and me to risk our lives for others.”
The two helpers worked in tandem, treating Caiyan and Zhao Wu as if they were invisible.
After the two had walked away, Caiyan suddenly realized that the helper had just left like that, and what would happen to all these things?
She looked at the barbecue grill and stove and said, "What should we do? They went to ask the young mistress for her wages. These things are very heavy, and it will be a lot of trouble for the two of us to carry them back."
Although standing in the wind and snow, Zhao Wu felt warm inside.
His aunt used to tell him to win over the young lady, but now that Miss Yan'er has taken a liking to him, it must be incredibly lucky for his Zhao family.
He reached out and brushed the snowflakes off Caiyan's head, saying considerately, "Miss Yan'er, please go back to the manor. I can carry all these things back by myself."
Zhao Wu's affectionate gestures didn't bother her; in fact, they gave her a strange sense of security.
“I can’t leave. You can’t move everything here at once. If it gets stolen, the young mistress will deduct it from your monthly allowance.”
Zhao Wu smiled憨厚ly, "Alright, I'll listen to Miss Yan'er."
Zhao Wu picked up the barbecue grill with one hand and strode towards the gate.
Caiyan walked to a sheltered spot by the wall and picked up a piece of cloth to wrap around herself.
Looking at his tall and strong back, the corners of her mouth unconsciously turned up slightly.
Zhao Wu possessed great strength and was also honest and kind. With his help, how could she not escape Jiang Jiaojiao's grasp?
A moment later, Zhao Wu returned, carrying a stove in one hand and a large bamboo basket filled with meat skewers in the other.
Caiyan wrapped the bamboo poles and cloth used for setting up the shed together, intending to carry them on her shoulder.
Zhao Wu glanced at the stool and other tools and said to Caiyan, "Be careful not to prick your hands. Miss Yan'er, you can take the seasonings back. I'll take the rest."
Before Caiyan could answer, Zhao Wu had already walked away.
It feels so good to have someone care about how I feel.
At this moment, Caiyan couldn't help but compare Su Peng with Zhao Wu.
The son-in-law was handsome, but his tenderness and consideration for her were only in bed.
When Jiang Jiaojiao took her anger out on him, he would at most make an excuse to send her away.
The rough-looking man in front of me spoke very simply, and his tone wasn't even gentle, but it was pleasant to hear.
Zhao Wu carried the things into the gatehouse, and as he turned around, he heard two workers coming out cursing.
"What a piece of trash! Stingy and acting all high and mighty like a young mistress, ptooey!"
Having worked together for several days, Zhao Wu quickly caught up and asked, "Brothers, has the young mistress settled your wages?"
The short man said angrily, "That woman didn't keep her word. She promised to give us two taels of silver a month, but just now she insisted that we broke our promise and refused to work, so she only gave us thirty coins a day."
