Black and white eyes fell on the bare wall, and without turning his head, he replied, "Stop dawdling, hurry up and find the mechanism, there must be a secret room in this house."
The term "impermanence" is just a figure of speech; these two are the best in the Dark Guard Camp, and they wouldn't go wrong even with their eyes closed.
"Look at his pig-headed appearance, he's damn cautious in everything he does." Wuchang muttered to himself as he moved the tinderbox inch by inch along the wall.
"Old Hei, there's nothing on this wall, not even a crack. What are we going to do?"
Wuchang felt a pang of regret; he should have dealt with the guards outside before drugging Guo Baoxian.
Black and White ignored Wu Chang's complaints, picked up a broken chair leg from the corner of the room, squatted down and gently tapped it on the ground.
As expected, a faint hollow sound came from the floor on one side of the room.
"Old Hei, you're really something, you actually thought of the secret room being underground."
"Don't get excited. There's a three-foot square area on the ground that sounds different. Don't be too happy yet. I haven't even figured out how to open it." Black and White threw aside the chair leg and groped around on the ground with their hands.
Wu Chang dismissed it, saying, "Don't worry. If we don't find it tonight, we can just get the tools and chisel the stone slabs on the ground after Guo Bao leaves Jiangzhou."
There were no mechanisms on the walls or the ground, and Black and White peered towards the entrance.
Suddenly, a bronze candlestick on the floor in the corner of the room caught his attention.
That candlestick was clearly different from others; it had a large base and looked like an old-fashioned item that had been abandoned in a storage room.
Black and White said to Wuchang, "You stand aside, I'll give it a try."
Wuchang was standing on that floor tile, pondering, when he heard Hei Bai's words and quickly moved to the side.
Black and White gripped the candlestick tightly at the waist and found that the candlestick seemed to grow out of the ground.
As you turn it left and right, the candlestick starts to spin too.
A sound of stone scraping against each other rang out, and a black hole appeared in the ground.
"Old Black, you're really something, this is a cellar."
As Wuchang spoke, he blew on the tinderbox and lit the candle on the candlestick.
The room suddenly brightened, and the stairs leading to the cellar came into view.
Hei Bai quickly covered the candlestick with his hand to block the light and said, "Go down quickly, I'll stay up here and keep watch."
The worst thing about going to a place like this is getting surrounded and attacked.
Once discovered and the cellar's mechanisms destroyed, even the most skilled fighters inside will find it difficult to escape.
Ignoring the scalding candle wax, Wuchang reached out and broke the candle off the candlestick, then turned and descended the steps.
After the impermanence left, the room darkened. Black and White dared not be careless and stood behind the door, listening intently to the sounds outside.
Impermanence descended the steps and found an oil lamp hanging on the wall. He lit the lamp and blew out the broken candle in his hand.
The cellar was as big as a room. In addition to the desk and bookshelves, there were more than a dozen large iron boxes, all of which were locked.
Wuchang lit the candlestick on the desk again and opened the bookcase without hesitation to start searching.
The bookshelf was full of account books. There were so many that it would be impossible for him and Hei Bai to move them all by themselves. There were just too many, probably account books from several years ago.
Wuchang casually flipped through the pages; some records contained information on ores, while others documented information on dockside water transport.
After a slight hesitation, Wuchang turned and walked towards the tin box, taking a key-like iron needle from his head.
Insert it into the keyhole, and after a few turns, you'll hear a "click".
The lock popped open with a snap, and when the box lid was lifted, a bright light almost blinded Wuchang.
It's all filled with gold.
Wuchang quickly got up and picked up the remaining metal boxes, but each box seemed to be rooted to the ground and did not move an inch.
Without a doubt, the tin box was full of gold.
Wuchang was dumbfounded. Each tin box was four feet long and three feet wide. How much gold must have been in such big boxes?
Wuchang turned around, closed the tin box, put the lock back on, and then went to check the drawer in the desk.
I opened the drawer, and it was full of kraft paper envelopes.
Wu Chang pulled out a letter and glanced at it; the contents were related to the prefectural government.
Wuchang didn't have time to check them one by one. He took off his coat and stuffed all the letters in the drawer into it.
When the Black and White Impermanence approached carrying a bag, they hurriedly asked, "Have you found it?"
"Found it. We don't know if they're all here, but this package is enough to convict them."
Impermanence put the candle that had been broken off the candlestick back in its original place.
"Great, we can head back to the capital tomorrow." Black and white turned the candlestick, and the floor tiles were restored.
The two went straight to the courtyard wall after leaving the back window. Once outside the Guo residence, Wuchang said, "I don't know when the Emperor will send people. If they discover that the things in the cellar are missing, then the eighteen chests of gold will be moved."
"We should not stay here any longer. We must return to the capital as soon as possible. The gold is a minor matter; Lord Lin's safety is the most important thing."
The two quickly returned to the inn. Lin Xiangzhi was woken up from his sleep by Hei Bai.
"Young master, wake up! We've discovered a shocking secret."
Lin Xiangzhi opened his eyes and said lazily, "Speak, I'm listening."
Black and White took the package of letters from Wu Chang's hands. "Young master, look, they're all here. If nothing is missing, we can return to the capital to report."
Lin Xiangzhi was instantly wide awake, sat up and opened the wrapped letter.
Zhu Xi was awakened by the noise in the room. Hearing the voices of the Black and White Impermanence, she quickly jumped out of bed and lit a candle.
When Zhu Xi saw his master take out a letter from the kraft paper envelope, he quickly took the candle over.
I read several letters in a row; they were all correspondence between Guo Baoxian and the officials of Jiangzhou.
Some letters mentioned prisoners being sent to mines, while others were also mentioned. Each letter was signed.
"Hmph! Guo Baoxian never dreamed that the leverage he held over others would eventually become his own."
Lin Xiangzhi flicked the letter in his hand, and the heavy weight in his heart finally lifted.
He looked up at the Black and White Impermanence and said, "You two should hurry up and get some sleep. We'll leave Jiangzhou this afternoon."
Wuchang said, "Young master, there's still some time before dawn. It doesn't matter whether we sleep or not, as long as we can leave in the morning."
"What Wuchang said is true. There is still a lot of gold in the Guo family's cellar. If Guo Baoxian returns to the capital to report on his duties and finds that all the letters are lost, he will definitely move all the gold."
Hei Bai voiced his deepest concerns.
"Gold! How much?"
"There were eighteen large iron boxes in the cellar."
Lin Xiang had already calculated a rough estimate and knew it was an astronomical figure, but when he heard Wuchang mention it, he was still shocked.
With so much gold, you could feed an army of countless soldiers.
"Wait, what did you just say? Return to the capital for a work report!"
Lin Xiangzhi was woken up twice tonight, and his mind was a beat slower than usual.
Hei Bai said, "The Emperor ordered Guo Baoxian to return to the capital to report on his duties. I heard this from Guo Baoxian in his concubine's room tonight."
Lin Xiangzhi's eyes lit up. "Is this true?"
"It's true, Guo Baoxian will take his concubine to the capital tomorrow."
Hei Bai cupped his hands in a respectful gesture, saying, "It's absolutely true, we both heard it very clearly."
