Chapter 39 What's so good about marriage?
The elevator doors opened, and Shi Yang stepped inside, only to encounter an uninvited guest.
Men in suits stood in the elevator, holding documents in their hands. The man in the center wore a well-tailored suit and had a refined and gentle face.
It's not surprising that he's here; the Ji family originally belonged to their clan.
Once outside the Ji family home, Shi Yang treated Ji Jinyu as a complete stranger, as if she didn't see him at all, not even sparing him a second glance.
Ji Jinyu secretly observed her. He knew that he had hurt her first, and he had thought about apologizing, but apart from seeing her when they ate at the old house, she had even blocked his contact information at other times.
He couldn't contact her at all.
They grew up together as childhood sweethearts, and their bond is unbreakable. To this day, he doesn't believe they'll ever become strangers; he's still willing to be an older brother to her, protecting and spoiling her.
But her icy demeanor made him uncomfortable.
"Looking for Pei Heng?"
If she could, Shi Yang wouldn't want to talk to him, but after all, she was in the Ji family compound, surrounded by people.
He hummed in agreement: "There are some design-related things that need to be handed over to President Ji."
The distant title "President Ji" puzzled Ji Jinyu.
When the elevator doors opened with a "ding," Shi Yang was the first to step out.
He walked towards the door without looking back.
The receptionist, who had seen her so many times that she was already familiar with her, greeted her with a smile: "Designer Shi is leaving soon, take care on your way."
Shi Yang nodded slightly and gave a smile.
Ji Jinyu followed behind, watching this scene unfold.
There were some employees along the way who greeted her, calling out "Designer Shi".
They all seemed to think of her as just an ordinary designer from a contract company, unaware that she was the true owner of the building.
Combined with the distant way she addressed me in the elevator just now.
Ji Jinyu guessed that Ji Peiheng had not revealed her identity.
In that instant, his heart skipped a beat, as if a tightly tied knot had been pulled loose.
Since he broke off the engagement, his father has stripped him of his job. During this time, he has been away from the company and, because of his bad mood, he has been staying at home all day and does not want to go out.
He only found out now that he's back at the company.
It turns out she wasn't doing well.
Watching her departing figure, a pang of heartache welled up within me.
She was clearly the rightful wife of the Ji family, but her identity was deliberately hidden.
Thinking back to the time she ate at the old house, the tender moments she shared with Ji Peiheng now seemed like nothing more than an act in front of everyone.
His younger brother ultimately took his anger out on her.
...
"What has Lao Xie been busy with lately?"
"What can I be busy with? Every day it's either my husband pressuring me to get married or he presses me to get married." Xie Ran slumped onto the sofa.
He's almost driven crazy by his old man's nagging, who talks to him every day about how wonderful marriage is and how important his grandchildren are.
He couldn't help but ask in bewilderment, "I don't understand, what's so good about getting married?"
Why are people in the world like robots programmed with a specific sequence of events? They reach a certain age, go to school, work, find someone to marry, have a child... If they're unhappy, they get divorced, find someone to marry, have a child... Repeating the process... living their lives step by step.
Wen Huai'an shrugged: "I don't know. I've never been married. You'd have to ask someone who's been married."
Their gazes all turned to the man in the middle who was drinking alone.
He leaned casually on the sofa with a fluid posture, the dim light in the private room occasionally shifting to him, highlighting his deep and aloof features.
Ji Peiheng chuckled lightly: "Nothing good."
The smile didn't reach his eyes.
Xie Ran and Wen Huai'an exchanged a glance.
He was acting very strange today. Even though he organized the gathering, he didn't say much.
Moreover, this was the first time he had asked them out for drinks during work hours. Ever since they got married, he had refused to go out with them after get off work and had gone straight home.
Today is really unusual. He came and just kept drinking. He only responded with a few words occasionally, and his smiles were all fake. It was obvious that he was in a bad mood.
They grew up together, and Wen Huai'an was used to his nonchalant and arrogant demeanor, so he rarely saw him like this.
Did you have a fight with your partner?
Wen Huai'an poured a full glass of wine, clinked glasses, and tentatively asked, "Did your sister-in-law upset you?"
Ji Peiheng didn't speak, tilted his head back and drank it all in one gulp. The wine slowly flowed down his throat and disappeared into his collar.
His actions were enough to prove that he guessed correctly.
Wen Huai'an sighed inwardly. When they got married, everyone thought that Ji Peiheng married Shi Yang out of spite or to get revenge.
But he knew that Ji Peiheng was never an impulsive or stubborn person.
He had his own purpose in every step he took.
"Brother, no matter what happens, try to communicate well. Your wife is a reasonable person. She will definitely understand you."
Ji Peiheng chuckled, holding his wine glass.
I don't know if I listened or not.
Xie Ran is straightforward and doesn't understand their intricacies. He's also in a bad mood because of the pressure from his family, and he's drinking alone.
After drinking too much, one person muttered to himself, "It's not that I don't want to get married, but you have to meet someone you like to get married. My husband forces me to go on blind dates every day, but I don't like any of them at all, let alone have children. Who can have a child with someone they don't like? What a joke."
Whether it was Wen Huai'an's imagination or not, Ji Peiheng's expression seemed even colder after Xie Ran finished speaking.
...
Shi Yang returned home on time after get off work, but Ji Peiheng hadn't come home by dinner time.
She ate dinner alone. Usually, Ji Peiheng would come back and have dinner with her around this time.
With Ji Peiheng absent, she surprisingly lost her appetite.
He took a few bites and then put down his chopsticks.
Aunt Cui teased her, noticing how little she ate, saying, "Even though the master is gone, you still eat so little."
Shi Yang frowned, inexplicably displeased.
What does his presence or absence have to do with her appetite?
They've only been married a short time, and he's already affecting his eating habits?
She subconsciously ignored the inexplicable emotions in her heart and attributed the cause to missing out on the design award.
Seeing that Shi Yang remained silent with a sullen face, Aunt Cui didn't dare to say anything either and went to do other things.
That evening, after taking a shower, Shi Yang took another birth control pill.
Even though he said he might have left it outside last night, she was still a little worried and needed to take a pill just to be safe.
Shi Yang tossed and turned in bed, unable to fall asleep.
Ji Peiheng has not returned yet.
She shook her head in frustration, trying to stop thinking about him.
Force yourself to fall asleep.
His eyes closed for a short while, then opened again.
Because her face was so itchy, scratching it made it even itchier.
Gradually, not only my face became itchy, but my whole body also became itchy, as if tiny insects were crawling all over me.
She turned on the bedside lamp, and the dim yellow light shone on her.
When her eyes fell upon the dense clusters of red rashes, she gasped.
