Chapter 229 A True Old-Fashioned Aristocratic Family

"Mo Huaixing, where are you going?"

Gan Tang followed the nurse as she pushed Sheng Weide into the ward. While waiting for the elevator, she glanced back and saw Mo Huaixing taking three steps at a time as he walked out of the hospital.

She hurriedly chased after him and got into a police car with Mo Huaixing. The police car keys were stained with blood; she didn't know if it was his father's blood.

Mo Huaixing angrily said, "Who told you to come up here? Get down."

"No," Gan Tang said, gripping the handle tightly. "They've come after us."

His colleagues, who had accompanied his father on the mission, were also waiting outside the operating room. Upon discovering the car keys had been stolen, they rushed out to investigate. Mo Huaixing had no choice but to drive away.

Despite the car traveling at extremely high speed, Gan Tang gripped the handlebars tightly but still couldn't stop it from lurching forward.

An hour later, the police car stopped on the rugged mountain road. Ahead, the road was covered by dense forest, and the car could not go any further.

"Stay in the car," Mo Huaixing instructed before getting out and heading into the mountains. Gan Tang couldn't stand it and secretly followed him.

The explosion site was in a mountain valley. There was a simple wooden shed and a makeshift earthen stove, both of which were completely destroyed. From the ruins, Mo Huaixing found a pill of drug that had almost been stuffed into Gan Tang's mouth.

"It's him!" Gan Tang felt a pang of heartache; no wonder he reacted so strongly.

“Through Dr. An, we have cracked the detection method for this drug, and Fu Yuanshan is not unaware of this. Instead of shipping the drugs from nearby, where it would be easier, he chose to risk coming to Yunhai to do so. He just wants to annoy my father. He wants to torture him to death little by little.”

Mo Huaixing knelt amidst the ruins, covering his face and weeping bitterly: "It was I who made Father lose."

"No, it's not your fault." Gan Tang hugged Mo Huaixing tightly.

Why did you save me?

His words seeped through her clothes and into her body, like ice spreading through her. Gan Tang stood frozen in place, as if encased in ice. If it weren't for her, her father wouldn't have lost an eye.

The pursuers arrived, and the two were taken back to the hospital.

Sheng Weide was in a semi-conscious state, muttering "A Ning, Feng'er" in the air.

A Ning is his wife, Feng'er is his son, and the chess piece he raised stands at the door, listening to his intermittent reminiscences of his wife and son.

The doctor walked in and asked, "Are you Sheng Weide's son?"

Mo Huaixing opened his mouth, but couldn't utter a single "yes".

"What is it?" Gan Tang put down the towel she was using to wipe the blood off Sheng Weide and went over to him.

The doctor said it wasn't anything serious, gave some instructions on precautions and how to have someone stay with you at the hospital, and had Mo Huaixing sign a few documents.

Perhaps the doctor's voice startled the people in the next ward. A middle-aged couple came over and kowtowed directly to Mo Huaixing.

"Thank you, Father. If it weren't for him, my daughter would be dead."

Mo Huaixing awkwardly retreated.

Gan Tang quickly helped the two up, and using the excuse that the patients needed to rest, sent them back to their ward. From inside the ward came the girl's clear voice: "From now on, I want to be a policeman like the police officers."

Gan Tang returned to the ward, but Mo Huaixing had already disappeared. Sheng Weide's blanket had fallen down a bit, so Gan Tang pulled it up over him and heard him muttering to himself, "Yi'er, Yi'er..."

At the hospital's information desk, Gan Tang found Mo Huaixing, who was inquiring about caregivers.

“Aren’t you on vacation?” Gan Tang pulled him aside.

Mo Huaixing lowered his eyes. "He doesn't want to see me."

Gan Tang panicked, "How do you know he doesn't want to see you?"

Mo Huaixing didn't argue with her. He took Gan Tang's hand and said, "Come with me to a place."

...

Green bricks and red tiles, ancient roads and alleys, occasionally swallows perch. Turning a corner in a blue stone alley, an elegant courtyard appears. Mo Huaixing skillfully pulls a moss-covered key from under the stone block at the entrance.

It turned out that the place he was referring to was the home he had grown up in. Gan Tang asked in surprise, "How long has it been since you've been back?"

“Dad… he often stays at the team’s headquarters and doesn’t come back often,” Mo Huaixing said, opening the courtyard gate.

The courtyard was very clean, with three trees and a large bronze vat filled with water, from which two leaves floated. Looking up, one could see a two-story ancient house with carved railings and painted beams, its eaves soaring into the clouds, quite impressive.

With front and back yards, it truly embodies the grandeur of old-time aristocratic families.

Gan Tang couldn't help but exclaim, "They didn't confiscate it?"

"What are you thinking about!" Mo Huaixing flicked her forehead.

Gan Tang rubbed her forehead and laughed, "I was wondering why it's so clean and uninhabited."

“Grandma Chen next door helps clean every few days,” Mo Huaixing said as he went upstairs. Gan Tang went into his childhood room, while he went into his father’s room to pack his clothes.

"Mo Huaixing!" Gan Tang excitedly brought over a comic book and saw Mo Huaixing sitting on the couch, holding a photo album. The album was full of happy moments of the family of three, but he was nowhere to be seen.

Mo Huaixing joked, "When I was little, I didn't understand why there were only photos of my mother holding my older brother, and not a single one of her holding me. Now I finally understand."

As he spoke, he pulled out his own photos and threw them on the ground one by one.

Gan Tang frowned: "What are you doing?"

“When he wakes up, he’ll probably want to see them.” After taking out all his photos, Mo Huaixing put the album into the package and then began tearing out his own pictures.

Gan Tang hurriedly snatched it away, holding it tightly behind her back. "If you don't want it, give it to me. I want it."

Mo Huaixing stared blankly at Gan Tang, then suddenly leaned on her, sobbing and crying, "Gan Tang, what should I do!"

After crying for a while, Gan Tang sat down, cupped his face in her hands, and asked, "You said you have evidence and will definitely bring Fu Yuanshan to justice, is that true?"

"Of course it's true."

"Don't you regret it?" she then asked.

Mo Huaixing paused for a moment, then said coldly, "At worst, I'll give him my life in return."

“He couldn’t have given birth to you on his own, why should you give it back to him?” Gan Tang covered Mo Huaixing’s mouth, stubbornly retorting, tears streaming down her cheeks.

Mo Huaixing wiped away Gan Tang's tears, a trace of guilt flashing in his eyes. "Gan Tang, there's something I've been thinking about for a long time. I want to be transferred to Canglan. In Canglan, I think I'll have a chance to find evidence of Fu Yuanshan's crimes. But how long that will be, or even if I'll still be alive, I can't guarantee."

Gan Tang asked, "Why didn't you pretend to have amnesia and stay by his side back then?"

"No matter how bad he is, he still has a fatherly affection for me. I cannot take advantage of his love for me to do the right thing."

The first rays of morning sunlight streamed in, illuminating his gentle yet resolute features. Gan Tang recalled a sentence she had read in a book: "Using kindness as bait is more wicked than evil itself."

No wonder he used "cannot" instead of "does not want to".

He was even more determined than she had imagined.

Gan Tang grasped his wrist, a hint of determination in her eyes: "You don't need to go to Canglan, the ledger is still there."

Mo Huaixing suddenly looked up: "Still here?"
