Gantang nodded with tears in her eyes.
“That’s something you risked your life for. How could I make a decision without your consent? I didn’t tell you because I was worried you might make a decision you’d regret for the rest of your life in a moment of impulse; and also because I was afraid he was still watching us, and taking it back rashly would endanger my parents. But I never imagined it would cause your father to lose an eye. I’m sorry.”
“Silly girl, his eyes have nothing to do with you. Even if you gave them to me immediately, it would still take time to verify.” Mo Huaixing pulled Gan Tang into his arms, his voice choked with emotion: “It’s my fault, it’s all my fault.”
The early spring wind was a bit chilly, but it already carried the scent of fresh grass. It made the off-white short down jacket puff up, making the person inside look like a chubby, snow-white baby.
Gan Tang unzipped her down jacket, took Mo Huaixing's hand and placed it on her heart, asking, "Mo Huaixing, when Lu Zhengqian was sick, you were a match for him, right?"
Mo Huaixing nodded.
Gan Tang continued, "Do you know why you weren't a match for Fu Yuanshan back then? Because your heart is with me. If you think I'm guilty, please redeem me."
"Silly girl." Mo Huaixing leaned down and kissed the girl in his arms, their lips and teeth intertwined, inseparable. He chased her heartbeat, and she inhaled his breath. All the pent-up emotions in her heart dissipated in this moment with love.
If faith collapses, only love can save us.
"Cold, cold..." Gan Tang shyly pushed away his increasingly restless hands, nestled in his arms, and tried to calm her disordered breathing.
Mo Huaixing held the girl in his arms tightly, tidying her messy hair. "Tangbao, I know what you're worried about, but I wasn't born to be anyone's son. Neither Sheng Weide's son nor Fu Yuanshan's son."
“But you have to be my husband.” Gan Tang pinched his nose and laughed.
Mo Huaixing grabbed her hand and got down to business: "Where did you hide the ledger?"
“I took photos of the ledgers and sent them to Chu Jiahe’s laboratory abroad. I told him that if I didn’t contact him within three months, he should give them to your father.”
After Gan Tang finished speaking, she quickly kissed him and said in a pitiful and coquettish tone, "Don't be angry. If it gets leaked, he's the only one among the people I know who isn't in mortal danger. I don't dare to gamble."
Mo Huaixing felt a pang of heartache: "Does it even need to be paid back?"
"I certainly can't pay it back by myself, but I still have you," Gan Tang said, and kissed him again.
Mo Huaixing pointed to the other side of his face, "This way."
"Yes, ma'am!" Gan Tang obediently kissed him.
...
Gan Tang's concerns were not unfounded. Although Mo Huaixing was his biological son, the fact that he dared to let him leave meant he couldn't possibly not be secretly monitoring him. Perhaps, it was also to verify whether Gan Tang truly did not have a backup of the ledger.
Another important point is that there were Lu Zhengqian's informants inside. Since they hadn't done anything, they weren't discovered at the time, and it's estimated that they were just informants for Lu Zhengqian to pass on messages.
Therefore, Mo Huaixing did not allow Gan Tang to contact Chu Jiahe. They spent a simple and happy time together in the clouds.
Mo Huaixing still hired a caregiver for Sheng Weide. However, Gan Tang would go to the hospital to look after Sheng Weide every day, but she didn't know where he went. Occasionally, she would see a figure hiding in a corner that looked remarkably like him.
Every time Sheng Weide saw Gan Tang, he would ask her, "Did Yi'er send you?"
She would always shake her head, saying, "I'm grateful to him for saving my life back then." At these moments, she could always see a look of disappointment in his eyes.
As darkness fell, Mo Huaixing would hold Gan Tang's hand and stroll through the sea of clouds. Spring is the season of rejuvenation, which the ancients especially valued, with many temple fairs. Gan Tang thoroughly experienced the customs of this foreign land, only occasionally chuckling and complaining, "What a waste of Jin Hai's rent."
On the other hand, the Homecoming Plan was a "complete success," and Mo Huaixing needed to go back to receive commendation, although he didn't want that fake commendation.
Before leaving, Gan Tang mentioned Sheng Weide to him again, saying, "He asks about you every day; he really misses you."
Mo Huaixing sneered, "Want to know why I'm still alive?"
That look was infuriating. Gan Tang said defiantly, "Then you go over there all lively and energetic, and really annoy him."
Mo Huaixing touched Gan Tang's hair, his voice calm and even: "He raised me, and I will take care of him until the end. That's all."
That's all? Are we afraid to ask for anything more?
When Gan Tang learned the truth, her hatred was no less than Mo Huaixing's. Yet, over the past few days, she felt that Sheng Weide wasn't entirely indifferent to her. Even if she initially used him for revenge, she had raised him for thirty years; how could she have no feelings for him at all?
But she didn't try to persuade him any further. She went to see Sheng Weide herself and accompanied him back to Jinhai.
At the commendation ceremony, Gan Tang, as Sheng Weide's representative, accepted the award. Throughout the entire ceremony, Mo Huaixing remained expressionless; perhaps to him, this was not a commendation, but a disgrace. Gan Tang felt that if it weren't to mislead Fu Yuanshan, he certainly wouldn't have come.
As they walked out of the conference hall, Gan Tang held the trophy in one hand and cupped Mo Huaixing's mouth with the other, saying, "Smile, smile!"
"Stop fooling around, there are so many people here!" Mo Huaixing grabbed Gan Tang's hand and walked out together.
Outside the retractable gate, some people were causing trouble by holding up red banners, surrounded by a large group of media reporters. As the crowd grew larger, the two men approached and realized that they were the main figures in the disturbance, the ones being denounced.
"Friends in the press,"
Upon seeing Mo Huaixing, an elderly woman in her sixties or seventies suddenly grabbed his sleeve and shouted, "It's him! It's him! My daughter was kidnapped, and he, as a policeman, abused his power and only saved his own girlfriend, leaving my daughter an idiot."
Gan Tang looked over and saw a woman standing next to her, in her thirties. She was the same woman who had been chosen, just like herself, to give Lu Zhengqian a heart transplant on the cruise ship. She had been given amnesia drugs and released.
How could you be so stupid?
Gan Tang reached out and waved his hand in front of her, and sure enough, she grinned.
"What are you doing?" The old man next to her pushed Gan Tang aside and shouted excitedly toward the building, "Please, leaders, do us justice!"
A man in his thirties squeezed in, hugged the woman, and cried out, "Please, everyone, give my wife justice!"
The old lady let go of Mo Huaixing and pushed the man, saying, "You divorced me because you thought my daughter was stupid, what are you pretending for now?"
“She was my wife when the accident happened. I took care of her for a year, so don’t try to take it all for yourself…” At this point, the man quickly stopped talking, hugged the woman, and wept bitterly.
The old man gave the old woman a look. The old woman immediately sat down on the ground and burst into tears, sobbing uncontrollably. It was unclear whether she was truly crying for her daughter or for the compensation money.
