Mo Huaixing nodded.
Gan Tang felt a pang of panic: "Were you going to see him just now?"
"Yes. I want to hear him tell me himself that they made a mistake."
Gan Tang grabbed his wrist and said urgently, "Mo Huaixing, you can't go. If Lu Zhengqian gets wind of it beforehand, you'll be walking into a trap."
“It can’t be him.” Mo Huaixing was also anxious: “He was the one who approved the operation. If it were him, I would have died three years ago.”
Gan Tang was stunned, but she still held onto him and asked, "If you're so sure it's not him, why are you still going?"
Mo Huaixing was also stunned. He suddenly realized that the trust he had talked about was nothing more than that.
"Gantang, I'm going, even if it means death, I'm going."
His eyes held an unwavering determination. Gan Tang thought for a moment and suggested, "How about I contact Fang Heng and have him ask for you?"
"No good!" His tone was full of childish defiance.
If all of this is true, then this meeting Mo Huaixing is about to see will be the last. If he doesn't see it, then the knot in his heart will never be untied for the rest of his life.
However, "your phone has GPS tracking," Gan Tang reminded her.
"No. It's a new one. The old one was thrown away when Pang Lou kidnapped me."
Gan Tang said anxiously, "Then wouldn't that make things even more complicated?"
“It’s nothing,” Mo Huaixing explained. “People who have been with the Green Dragon Gang for more than three years all use their own cell phones.”
"Alright, I'll go with you." Gan Tang looked into his eyes and decided to take the gamble.
Mo Huaixing shook his head. "You can't go."
“I’ve at least met your teacher. If Lu Zhengqian finds out, there’s still room for maneuver.” Seeing that he was still hesitant, Gan Tang continued, “If Chen Qianqian is home, I can help you distract her. You don’t want her to see us, do you?”
Mo Huaixing hesitated for a moment. "She's still in college, so she shouldn't be here."
"What if? Today is the weekend."
...
When the two arrived at Teacher Chen's building, it was a little after nine o'clock in the evening. That was the busiest time of day in the new urban area, but it was already bedtime in the old urban area. The old streetlights illuminated the potholed road and cast dappled shadows on the trees.
Gan Tang pulled Mo Huaixing upstairs.
As Gan Tang reached the door, she was about to knock when she noticed it was ajar and dark inside. She turned to look at Mo Huaixing. Mo Huaixing pushed the door open and entered.
In the study, only a desk lamp was on. Chen Jianfeng sat under the lamp, sketching a portrait.
"You've come!" His voice was calm and even, as if he had expected you to come.
At that moment, Mo Huaixing's heart sank to the bottom. "You knew?"
"After handling cases for so many years, I still have this much sensitivity." Chen Jianfeng put down his pencil and looked at the young man in front of him. "He's become much more composed than before, but still not composed enough."
Mo Huaixing clenched his fists and gritted his teeth as he asked, "When did it start?"
"Ten years ago," Chen Jianfeng said calmly, "For the past ten years, I've been the one helping Fu Yuanshan get his drugs through border checks."
"Ten years ago!" Mo Huaixing could no longer suppress his anger and smiled bitterly: "In other words, from the day I met you, you were a hypocrite who looked virtuous but was actually wicked."
“That wasn’t the case back then.” Chen Jianfeng’s eyes twitched slightly as he retorted, “It wasn’t like that in the first six months after I met you.”
"What's the difference?" Mo Huaixing sneered.
"Yes." Chen Jianfeng finally couldn't hold back his tears. "At least for those six months, I was your teacher."
"Then where did my teacher go?" Mo Huaixing suppressed his anger and coldly questioned, "What benefits did he give you to make you sell your soul?"
"Ziyi, do you still remember your teacher's wife?" Chen Jianfeng's face was full of pain as he talked about the past. "She didn't die accidentally, she committed suicide. Before she committed suicide, she begged me to save our daughter, but I didn't agree."
Mo Huaixing finally remembered what happened ten years ago and exclaimed in shock, "Back then, it was Fu Yuanshan who kidnapped Qianqian?"
Chen Jianfeng placed an old cell phone on the desk and pushed it toward Mo Huaixing.
The screen showed a video of a young girl being assaulted; everything was done except for the final act. The only saving grace was that the girl was unconscious.
“Ziyi, I want to pursue the ideals I had when I was young, and I love the profession I work in. For my vow, for my faith, for the country I love, I can give everything. But my wife and children…”
At this point, Chen Jianfeng choked up, "But all of this has nothing to do with them. Is it too much of a price to sacrifice them to fulfill my faith?"
Mo Huaixing froze until he saw Chen Jianfeng delete the video that he had kept for ten years.
"What are you doing?" This is all evidence, evidence that he had no choice but to do it.
Chen Jianfeng said calmly, "I don't want anyone to know about this except you. Especially Qianqian."
"But?"
“There are no buts. I betrayed my faith and deserve to be punished.” Chen Jianfeng laughed. “Evil deeds will have evil consequences. From the first time I transported goods for him, I knew this day would come.”
Mo Huaixing said with heartache, "Ten years have passed. Since you knew this day would come sooner or later, why didn't you confess? You had countless opportunities to confess during these ten years, why didn't you speak?"
“Because I don’t have your father’s courage, because I am ultimately a hypocrite.” Chen Jianfeng looked at the wall, at the countless medals and trophies.
"I can't let go of my past honors, and I can't face my true self, so I want to keep it a secret, to keep hiding it forever." Until I sink deeper and deeper, until there is no turning back.
