Mo Huaixing picked up Gan Tang in his arms and gently placed her on the back seat, then covered her with his trench coat.
A bright blue sports car was parked on the quiet roadside. One person was lying inside, and another was leaning against the back of the car. After some time, Gan Tang sat up and gently knocked on the car window.
"I'm fine now, let's go!"
"good!"
Mo Huaixing looked around and, seeing no one was there, returned to his car and asked a bold question: "Do you want to go see him?"
He desperately wanted to know whether Cao Yunbo and Lü Jiao were truly dead or faking it. If they were truly dead, it meant that the world had changed!
Seeing the doubt on Gan Tang's face, Mo Huaixing explained, "After the police confirm the death, they will notify the family to pick up the 'person'. If you go to the police station now, you should be able to run into them."
"No need!" The person is dead, what's the use of looking at him now? Is it just crocodile tears?
Gan Tang shook her head self-deprecatingly, looked up at Mo Huaixing, and said in a voice that seemed to come from a distant mountain: "Mo Huaixing, I have always been grateful to you. Do you know why?"
"Because I helped you?" He couldn't think of anything else.
Gan Tang shook her head. "That's not the most important thing. The most important thing is that the person Lu Zhengqian made me kill was the one you held my hand and pulled the trigger. So I kept telling myself that you killed that person, and it has nothing to do with me. The evil deeds done by my blood father also have nothing to do with me."
But now she can no longer deceive herself.
The woman's deathly pale face was reflected in the rearview mirror. Mo Huaixing felt a pang of heartache. He knew he shouldn't tell her things that weren't certain, but wanting to ease her pain, he spoke anyway: "Have you ever considered that they didn't commit suicide at all!"
"Not suicide?" Gan Tang looked up in surprise. "Then it was at the police station?"
"So what? Mr. Fu's influence is perhaps beyond our imagination." This was also what Mo Huaixing was most worried about.
He turned to look at Gan Tang and finally comforted her, "The cause of this matter stemmed from Cao Yunbo's greed, and the outcome depends on Mr. Fu's ruthlessness. None of this is within your control. All you can do is protect yourself."
Gan Tang was surprised that such words came from the man in front of her, and asked, "Don't you feel any remorse when you kill someone, like the policeman you killed?"
Mo Huaixing asked in surprise, "Yuan Biao told you?"
Gan Tang nodded.
Mo Huaixing thought of Fu Cheng and sighed, "Perhaps, there might be a little bit."
"Really?" She thought that killing too many people was no different from killing chickens. Gan Tang closed her eyes and said calmly, "Let's go!"
Mo Huaixing asked, "Where do you want to go?"
"Let's go back to the company! Doing something will keep my mind from wandering off."
"Okay!" Mo Huaixing slowly drove towards the Lu Group.
Upon arriving at the Lu Group building, Gan Tang got out of the car and walked towards the building. Outside the revolving doors, two familiar figures appeared—the people who had appeared countless times in her dreams, making her pillow wet with tears.
"Dad, Mom..."
Gan Tang called out, her eyes brimming with tears. As if sensing her call, the two people outside the revolving door looked in her direction. Gan Tang hurriedly hid behind the ornamental flowerbed. She tried to call out to Mo Huaixing, but found he had already driven away.
Gan Tang went around to the back of the building and had the security guards chase her parents away. She secretly followed them until she saw them enter a hotel not far away, then returned to ask the security guard, "What are they doing here?"
The security guard said, "They were holding newspapers with your picture on them, asking if you worked here. I said, 'How could you possibly work here, Miss? I've never been to the company before,' and then I chased them away!"
"Thank you!" Gan Tang instructed, "Don't tell anyone about this."
Now she has also developed the habit of carrying cash, and she took out two hundred yuan from her wallet to give it to him.
"Young Miss, this is what I should do."
"Here you go!" Gan Tang still stuffed the money into his hand. To be absolutely sure, she also asked the receptionist and learned that they hadn't revealed her information before leaving with peace of mind and going to a quiet shady spot to make a phone call.
"Hello, Fu Shaojie, how are my... adoptive parents doing now?"
"How would I know? They've already..." The impatient voice on the phone immediately snapped him out of his daze. Fu Shaojie asked warily, "Why would you ask them?"
"I just want to know if they're doing well these days." Gan Tang casually replied, then commanded, "What exactly happened to them? Tell me!"
Fu Shaojie, in a fit of pique, said irritably, "They've run away, and I'm looking for them right now!"
Gan Tang became even more nervous and tentatively asked, "Does Dad know?"
"Can I let Dad know?" His father had put him in charge of drug trafficking, and he hadn't done a good job. Now he couldn't even keep an eye on people. How could he ever face other businesses again? Fu Shaojie sighed, "If we're sure they've sneaked back to China, we definitely have to tell Dad."
“Yes, little brother, you did a great job!” Gan Tang said, “Listen to me. You must keep this a secret until we find the person. Otherwise, how can Dad entrust you with important matters in the future? Dad told me that once I marry Chu Jiahe, he will hand over the Lu Group to you so you can live out your days in peace.”
"Dad really said that?" Fu Shaojie's voice became noticeably excited.
"Of course!" Gan Tang continued to flatter him, "In the entire Lu Group, only the three of us are blood relatives. And since I'm the daughter, if he doesn't pass the Lu Group on to you, who else would he pass it on to? You must perform well and not disappoint him."
"Sis, why are you suddenly being so nice to me?" Fu Shaojie scratched his head.
Gan Tang then flattered, "When I marry into the Chu Group, won't I have to rely on you, my only younger brother?"
