Chapter 3 Can't Get Warm

Lin Qingyan stood behind a large pillar, from which she could see the two figures standing side by side, looking surprisingly well-matched. A man's voice came from the phone she held to her ear, as always, magnetic and gentle, "Yan Yan?"

Wen Yan is just like his name suggests: gentle, polite, and understanding.

Lin Qingyan once thought that Wen Yan's gentleness belonged only to him, but reality dealt him blow after blow, shattering his expectations in an instant. He was terribly wrong.

Wasn't he supposed to be on a business trip? How come he's spending time with Annan again? It's such a coincidence that we can bump into each other abroad.

Clinging to the last shred of hope, Lin Qingyan forced a smile and asked in as calm and relaxed a tone as possible, "Brother Yan, what are you doing?"

His tightly clenched hands hanging at his sides betrayed his tense and uneasy state of mind.

"I'm with a client." Wen Yan glanced at An Nanyi beside him out of the corner of his eye. The latter looked at him with a teasing gaze. He raised his fist to his lips and coughed slightly, feeling a little guilty. He spoke with concern, "Yan Yan, I heard about what happened to you. How are you now? Are you alright?"

Liar, liar.

If he hadn't been caught red-handed, Lin Qingyan felt he would have foolishly believed it again. He had always been oblivious when it came to matters of the heart, and it was precisely because of this that he had been deceived by Wen Yan's gentle, central-air conditioning-like nature for three years.

"No, I'm not okay at all." The young man's face was pale, but his eyes were tinged with a faint red. His clear eyes were covered with a layer of mist, and he said in a hoarse voice, "Brother Yan, I miss you so much."

So he traveled a long way to get here, only to be greeted by this scene.

Clearly not expecting the person on the other end of the phone to say such a thing, Wen Yan was somewhat taken aback, and her eyes softened involuntarily. "Yan Yan, your brother Yan misses you too. I'll come back to see you after I finish my work..."

As they were talking, An Nanyi, who had been silent beside them, suddenly swayed and fell to the ground with a low cry. Wen Yan quickly grabbed his waist and pulled him back from the fall.

"Yan Yan, I still have some work to do, so I'll have to go now." He hung up the phone without hesitation, looking at the person in his arms with concern, "Are you alright? Are you hurt?"

"It's nothing, I just twisted my ankle." Although she said that, An Nanyi frowned in pain, bit her lower lip pitifully, and said with annoyance, "I can fall even when walking on flat ground, I'm so clumsy."

"I'm so sorry, Wen-ge, I interrupted your call with Yan Yan. I really apologize."

"Fool, how can I blame you? I'll take you to the hospital."

...

Seeing the two figures standing close together, Lin Qingyan put down her phone and ran away in a panic as if fleeing a disaster. When she returned to her room, her fair and pretty face was covered with tear tracks, and glistening tears blurred her vision.

He was naturally slow to understand emotions, and the only person he ever liked was Wen Yan. He treated her with utmost care and unreserved enthusiasm, naively believing that he could exchange one heart for another.

But he didn't realize that some people's hearts are made of stone and can't be warmed.

In the quiet room, the slender young man curled up in a corner, his face buried in his knees, not daring to make a loud sound even when crying. He could only bite his lower lip and let out desperate whimpers like a kitten.

His lower lip was bitten until it bled, but he didn't react at all.

Born without the ability to feel pain, he cannot even experience what pain feels like.
