Chapter 56 It's all your fault
Lin Family Villa, Hong Kong.
The lights were dazzling, and the air was filled with the fragrance of clothes and the rustling of hair.
Song Yuan's birthday party is in full swing, filled with insincere greetings and deliberate flattery.
Lin Xili, dressed in a well-fitting dark dress, stood in the corner, looking out of place.
She was forced to return, out of the most basic and inescapable filial duty.
She had no appetite for the fancy meal, so she made an excuse to leave the noisy living room, thinking she'd get some fresh air in the garden.
She walked slowly along the path, trying to dispel the gloom in her heart with the cold air.
Just as they passed behind a dense clump of holly, the faint sound of suppressed arguing could be heard.
She hadn't intended to eavesdrop, and as she turned to leave, Lin Xuenuo's voice, choked with sobs, drifted over:
"Xu Yanchi, why are you so cold to me now? You barely respond when I talk to you, and you're coming home later and later. What did I do wrong?"
Lin Xili paused, seeing Lin Xuenuo and Xu Yanchi.
Xu Yanchi replied impatiently, "Lin Xuenuo, all you do is make trouble and be suspicious all the time. I told you to rest and take care of your pregnancy, but you insisted on meddling in the company's affairs. And what was the result? You ruined the cooperation with Dingsheng. You're really good for nothing!"
"I was just trying to help you," Lin Xuenuo accused, feeling wronged. "You're just disgusted with me. Tell me, are you seeing someone else? Do you regret marrying me?"
"You're being completely unreasonable!" Xu Yanchi said angrily, "I'm too lazy to argue with you!"
After Xu Yanchi finished speaking, he walked out from behind the holly bushes with a stern face and headed straight for the main building of the villa.
Lin Xili didn't want to get involved in this trouble and was about to leave quietly when Lin Xuenuo's delicate, cold voice rang out behind her:
"stop."
Lin Xili paused, then slowly turned around.
Lin Xuenuo emerged from behind the holly bushes, her face still wet with tears, and stared intently at Lin Xili.
"You heard everything? Aren't you happy? You're smug to see me doing badly, aren't you?"
Lin Xili looked at her calmly, her face expressionless: "No."
Lin Xuenuo stepped forward and said with a wry smile, "Sister, do you know? Xu Yanchi also had a crush on you when he was young!"
If it were in the past, she would have been happy to know that Xu Yanchi had liked her when he was young.
Whether I ever liked it or not is no longer important.
However, Lin Xuenuo was blinded by jealousy and continued, "When the Xu and Lin families were arranged to marry, he specifically wanted you, not just because you are a forensic doctor and have a relatively clean background, but because he liked you!"
"It's a pity you were later diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. How could Young Master Xu possibly still want something that might affect his fertility? So he agreed to annul the engagement without hesitation!"
"But now!" Lin Xuenuo suddenly accused, unwilling to accept it: "Your illness is cured, and you've become the healthy and outstanding Lin Xili again. Looking at you now, he's fallen for you again, and he regrets it."
As she spoke, she stepped forward and pressed closer, questioning Lin Xili through gritted teeth: "Sister, tell me, why did you want to get cured? You should always be a patient, a patient who is disliked by everyone and can never be as good as me."
Lin Xili simply listened quietly.
Looking at her sister, whose appearance had been completely altered by jealousy, she felt only endless sorrow and a detached peace.
After Lin Xuenuo finished venting, Lin Xili slowly spoke:
"He, Xu Yanchi, is now my brother-in-law. That's all."
After saying that, she turned and left, no longer looking at Lin Xuenuo's face, which froze instantly and then became even more unpleasant.
She walked to the roadside, took out her phone, and hailed a car without hesitation.
The car arrived quickly, and Lin Xili opened the door, got in, and gave the address of the Justice Bureau dormitory.
Lin Xili leaned back in her chair, closed her eyes, and tried to completely shut out the disgusting argument and malice that had just taken place in the garden.
Just then, my phone rang.
Lin Xili took a deep breath and swiped the green connection button.
"Lin Xili, where are you? Did you make Xue Nuo cry? She's pregnant, don't you know she can't get emotional?" Song Yuan bombarded her with questions.
"No."
"No? Then why is she crying like this? She said she wasn't feeling well as soon as she came back from the garden!"
"Lin Xili, let me tell you, you know your sister's current situation. Can't you just behave yourself?"
"Why do you insist on making Xu Yanchi fall in love with you? Can't you just stay away from them?"
These accusations were so absurd that Lin Xili wanted to laugh but couldn't.
Before she could answer, Lin Junsheng's accusatory voice came from the other end of the phone again:
"Xi Li, how could you treat your sister like this? She's your own sister. Seducing your own brother-in-law, don't you have any shame?"
"Shame?" Lin Xili sneered, "What Xu Yanchi thinks is none of my business. Have you all forgotten that I'm married!"
She deliberately emphasized the word "marriage," as if to remind them, and also as to remind herself of the fragile protective shell granted by law.
"Marriage?" Song Yuan's anger flared even more upon hearing this.
"That rural doctor? I told you to get a divorce, but you absolutely refused. You never give me a moment's peace."
It's always like this.
She should have guessed long ago what problems arose between Lin Xuenuo and Xu Yanchi, and that in the end, they would still indirectly blame her.
Lin Xili felt a deep weariness, a weariness stemming from more than twenty years of endless injustice.
She interrupted her mother, saying sternly, "Isn't Xue Nuo's current marital predicament entirely your doing? When I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, the Xu family didn't hesitate to break off the engagement, but didn't you immediately let Xue Nuo marry into that family?"
“She has been spoiled by you since she was a child, and you have never thought that the Xu family is not the Lin family. They will not spoil her or indulge her unconditionally.”
"You sent her to a family that only values profit and perfection, yet you expect her to be able to do as she pleases as she would in her own home?"
"Now that problems have arisen, you don't blame Jon Snow for insisting on marrying into that family, you don't blame your choices back then, so why are you blaming me?"
Why don't you ever reflect on the reasons within yourselves?
"Enough!" Song Yuan interrupted her sharply. "Lin Xili, it all comes down to your fault. If you hadn't had that illness, you could have married Xu Yanchi smoothly, and all this trouble wouldn't have happened now. It's all your fault!"
Look, here we go again.
"I'm tired." Lin Xili forced a smile; she was truly exhausted. What was the point of arguing any further?
That's fine.
After saying that, she hung up the phone, put it on silent, and threw it into her bag.
The peace and quiet lingered, but the suffocating feeling in my chest persisted for a long time.
The car stopped downstairs at the Justice Bureau dormitory building. Lin Xili thanked them and got out of the car.
A cold wind instantly enveloped her; she pulled her coat tighter and hurried into the apartment building.
She closed the door, leaned weakly against it, and let out a long sigh.
As if by some strange twist of fate, she opened WeChat and saw the pinned name "Huo Nanchen".
A strange impulse and a sense of injustice made her type three words and send them:
Huo Nanchen
There was no title, no suffix, just his name.
The moment she sent it, looking at those three lonely words, she suddenly snapped back to reality.
Why should she go to him to vent her frustrations because she suffered in her family of origin? He has no obligation to take on her negative emotions.
Just as she was regretting her impulsiveness, her phone screen suddenly lit up and vibrated, displaying the name "Huo Nanchen".
He called me directly.
Lin Xili paused for a few seconds before answering the phone: "Hello?"
His characteristic deep, calm voice came from the other end of the phone, "What's wrong?"
A simple question caused Lin Xili's nose to inexplicably tingle.
She quickly suppressed her vulnerability, "It's nothing, I just got back to the dorm. I just wanted to ask if your training is over?"
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone. He was never a talkative person, and he certainly wouldn't pry.
"Yes, you're back. Get some rest."
"Okay, you too."
The call ended quickly, in less than a minute.
Lin Xili looked at her phone, now silent, feeling a sense of emptiness mixed with a strange sense of peace.
At least, on this cold night, there is still someone who will immediately call to ask "What's wrong?" because of her seemingly random message.
