Chapter 20 Yu Chaoxian found it amusing and poked her cheek: ...
Yu Chaoxian's cold gaze swept over Yu Tang, who was cowering to the side. The latter immediately felt the air pressure in the car drop. Forget about smiling; even the slight smile that had been on his lips just moments before vanished.
He was the one who told me to say it, but he got upset when I actually said it.
“Actually, you don’t need to learn. You’re fine as you are.” Yu Tang gave a dry laugh.
Yu Chaoxian wondered if he was being too friendly with his smiles, or if he was afraid that Yu Tang was more pleasing to the eye.
The atmosphere inside the car became tense for a moment. Yu Tang was at a loss for what to do when her eyes suddenly lit up as she saw the food street ahead. "I'll treat you to takoyaki! It has a whole little octopus inside, lots of cheese and bonito flakes, it's so delicious."
"Whose money should we use to pay for it?"
“My…” Yu Tang’s voice trailed off, “The money you gave me.”
Yu Chaoxian chuckled coldly twice. To Yu Tang, the laughter sounded extremely disdainful. Yu Tang quickly understood that Yu Chaoxian didn't care at all about the takoyaki she had invited.
Most of the time, Yu Tang didn't dare to talk back to Yu Chaoxian. Being looked down upon like this, Yu Tang felt a little wronged, and her stomach growled twice.
Yu Chao glanced at Yu Tang in the rearview mirror. It turned out that the high school student was hungry and was using the excuse of inviting him to eat to fill his own stomach.
The way she looked like she was about to cry was exactly the same as that expression. Was she begging him again? Who taught her that?
The car moved forward and then stopped. Yu Chaoxian glanced at Yu Tang, who had been keeping her head down, and asked, "What, are you waiting for me to ask you to get out of the car?"
Upon hearing this, Yu Tang looked up at Yu Chaoxian, then glanced at the place where they had stopped, which was the snack street. Her eyes lit up and she quickly opened the car door and got out.
Yu Tang seemed to know the people on the snack street very well. When she passed the grandma selling candied hawthorns, she greeted her and said hello. The grandma picked out the biggest candied strawberry for her. When she met the aunt selling fresh juice, Yu Tang smiled and complimented her on her good complexion. The aunt filled the juice container to the brim. When she passed the sister selling small cakes, Yu Tang praised the sister's pretty dress. The sister gave her two extra small cakes.
Yu Chaoxian followed impatiently behind her, arms crossed. He watched her hopping around, so sweet-talking to others, but when it came to him, she was like someone who had swallowed a bitter pill, rendered speechless.
After buying the last of the takoyaki, Yu Tang finally ran to find Yu Chaoxian with a bunch of food in her arms.
"Want to try some?" Yu Tang picked up a freshly made takoyaki, the bonito flakes still swaying gently. The wind made her ponytail obediently swing in one direction, her outstretched hand was pink and tender, with watercolor stains still on the back of her hand, on which a... fish was drawn?
childish.
Yu Chaoxian wasn't interested in the dish covered in a layer of sauce, but Yu Tang's obvious attempt to please him made him feel subtly pleased.
Yu Tang raised the small meatball and held it up in front of Yu Chaoxian, also leaving enough of the chopsticks exposed so that Yu Chaoxian could easily take them.
Perhaps it was the streetlights, but Yu Tang's eyes were unusually bright. Yu Chaoxian saw his magnified reflection in Yu Tang's eyes, while Yu Tang saw her own wide-eyed reflection in his.
Yu Chaoxian took the small meatball directly from her hand and put it in his mouth, as if she were feeding him directly.
Are you really that lazy?
"Forget it, I won't argue with him. He's still a junior after all." Thinking this, Yu Tang's eyes softened a bit. She was helping her brother take care of the child. The thought of sharing some of the responsibility with her brother made Yu Tang feel much more at ease.
Yu Tang also ate one, and then she wrapped up the rest and put them away.
Yu Chaoxian narrowed his eyes: "Take it back for your brother to eat?"
“Of course,” Yu Tang said, shaking the juice in her hand, “I heard that corn juice can lower blood pressure, so I’ll give it to my brother too.”
Okay, very good. The takoyaki was what Yu Tang wanted to eat, and out of six, she only gave him one. The big glass of corn juice was for Yu Yanting, the little cake was for Fei, and the fancy flip-top makeup mirror that she held in her hands also belonged to Fei. She ate all the candied hawthorns and strawberries, saying they would melt when she got back, without even asking him if he wanted any.
Yu Chaoxian laughed angrily: "Where's the money?"
Yu Tang paused for a moment, then took out some money from her pocket: "Here it is."
Yu Chaoxian snatched it all away from her, leaving her with nothing. Yu Tang found Yu Chaoxian's behavior inexplicable; he had already given her everything, yet he still wanted it back. Didn't she end up doing all the work for him that morning for nothing? Although she felt she had been taken advantage of, she didn't dare show it. She just couldn't figure out what she had done to offend him.
Yu Chaoxian ignored her the whole way, not caring that she had to run to keep up with him.
Until the night market reached its end, at the alley where cars parked, there were hardly any people left. It's no wonder Jingming Road isn't congested; the road is so old and dilapidated that cars don't want to travel through it.
Yu Chaoxian, who was in front, suddenly stopped. Yu Tang didn't notice and fell headfirst onto his back.
A chilling wind blew at the alley entrance, and Yu Chaoxian keenly sensed something was wrong. "Swoosh—!" A gunshot rang out.
The moment the billboard was pierced by the bullet, Yu Tang didn't realize what had happened until she was suddenly pulled back. Just as she was about to trip, someone grabbed her waist and held her in a familiar, broad embrace.
She then realized that the bullet had just grazed her left shoulder.
A series of loud bangs and crashes broke the circuit, sparks flew, and the neon lights flickered.
The figures aiming at Yu Tang in the darkness all hid warily. They had thought it would be a simple kidnapping mission, but the man who appeared was surprisingly skilled and efficient.
Yu Chaoxian quickly grabbed Yu Tang and hid behind the car. Another shot was fired from the opposite side. The bullet grazed the car door, sparking, and was less than ten centimeters from Yu Chaoxian's neck.
It's a silenced VKS sniper rifle with a five-round magazine and an effective range of 600 meters. This means the sniper hiding in the shadows is within a 600-meter radius.
Within a 600-meter radius, a suitable spot for sniping... Yu Chao first locked his target on the high-rise unfinished building ahead.
There was an SR-25 sniper rifle in the car, which Yu Chaoxian had taken out from the base to give to Mickey. This gun could also be used by civilians, so it wasn't unusual for him to carry it around normally. He never expected it to come in handy here.
Even if Yu Tang was slow to react, she knew that she was being chased and killed. She was so scared that her heart was about to jump out of her chest. If Yu Chaoxian hadn't held her and dodged away, she would have ended up with that smashed neon sign.
Yu Chaoxian glanced at Yu Tang casually and saw that she was covering her mouth and trying her best not to make a sound. She did have some sense and was afraid that making a sound would affect his judgment.
Yu Tang glanced at him out of the corner of her eye, but to her surprise, at such a tense and crucial moment, Yu Chaoxian was actually smiling, a smile of ease and bloodlust like that of a hunter seeing its prey.
Yu Tang suddenly realized that, compared to the people who assassinated them, Yu Chaoxian was the most terrifying one.
Yu Chaoxian threw his black casual jacket over her, covering the white that was too conspicuous in the night, and said in a deep and steady voice: "I didn't come over. No matter what you hear, don't come out."
This was the first time Yu Tang had seen Yu Chaoxian speak to her with such an expression, completely different from his usual playful and irreverent demeanor. He seemed unfamiliar yet reassuring. Fortunately, this place was a blind spot; as long as she was blocked in front, she would be safe. Yu Tang tried to minimize her presence so as not to distract Yu Chaoxian. Actually, it wasn't that she was afraid of distracting him, but rather that she was afraid of angering him and causing him to abandon her completely.
"You...you're going out?" Yu Tang's heart was pounding so hard it was almost jumping out of her throat. She instinctively tried to grab Yu Chaoxia's sleeve, hoping he would stay there for a while so she could call her brother to come and rescue her.
Yu Chaoxian didn't notice her little actions. Holding the pistol in his hand, he quickly crouched down by the front door of the car under the cover of the car.
The moment Yu Chao opened the car door, a bullet was fired from the left and hit the rearview mirror.
It seems there is more than one person.
The person with the gun in the rearview mirror immediately dodged to the side of the wall. Yu Chao had opened the car door earlier to pinpoint the other person's location.
Yu Chaoxian laughed with extreme disdain and pulled the trigger: "Idiot."
A clean and decisive shot.
The man opposite him thought he was just too nervous, and sweat dripped down his forehead. He subconsciously wiped it away and saw that his hand was covered in red. Unfortunately, the moment he realized he had been shot was the moment he died. The man fell backward to the ground, his eyes wide open in death.
Yu Chao first placed the muzzle of his gun in the gap of the car window. The faint flash of light exposed when the sniper fired was just now. He deliberately opened the car door a little wider, revealing Yu Tang's schoolbag.
"Bang—" A shot was fired, and the sniper on the other side aimed at the gap in the car window and shot through Yu Tang's schoolbag. Yu Chaoxian wondered for a second what kind of snacks Yu Tang had in her schoolbag, and the bullet was actually cream.
It wasn't a misperception; it seemed like this group wasn't after him, but rather their target was that aunt.
The sniper fired three bullets, meaning the opponent had only two left before needing to reload.
However, he had no chance of changing the magazine.
Yu Chaoxian rolled over in the car, jumped out of the back seat, and extended the line of fire with the enemy sniper in the shadows. The enemy sniper had obviously changed position as well.
Seeing Yu Chaoxian's back, Yu Tang finally felt relieved. It seemed that just seeing Yu Chaoxian gave her a sense of security. She had only heard the gunshot and was afraid that Yu Chaoxian had been shot. She wanted to go out to check, but she was afraid of causing unnecessary trouble for Yu Chaoxian. After all, whether she could get out of here alive depended on Yu Chaoxian.
However, there was no panic in Yu Chaoxian's eyes; instead, there was a hint of excitement. He pulled the trigger in the darkness, and a "bang" rang out beside him—the sound of a bullet being fired. The man opposite him, who was being sprayed with bullets by a submachine gun, was shot in the head by Yu Chaoxian.
Yu Tang's gaze returned to Yu Chaoxian, silent and focused... Yu Tang had always admitted that Yu Chaoxian was handsome at all times, even more handsome than the male stars she had seen in idol dramas, but there was a big difference between the two. Yu Chaoxian seemed to belong to darkness by nature; he was especially captivating in the night, his thin, crimson lips slightly pursed, his dark, upturned eyelashes raised, revealing a focused and sharp gaze.
A summer breeze blew by, perfectly shaping the curl of his hair and lightly brushing against his eyebrows.
The man was right in front of Yu Tang, as hard as the wall she was leaning against. Yu Chaoxian's hair brushed past the corner of Yu Tang's eye. Yu Tang reached out to grab it, but only caught a wisp of breeze.
Yu Tang wasn't sure if she had mistaken the dark figure on the second floor for someone else. She quietly opened the makeup mirror she had prepared for Mo Fei and used the reflection from the streetlight to illuminate the second floor. Almost the instant the reflected light passed, Yu Chaoxian, without moving, pulled out another pistol and fired a shot at the exposed dark figure.
The dark figure fell to the ground with a thud.
Yu Chaoxian could feel the softness and warmth in his lower back. He reached back and patted Yu Tang's head with satisfaction, as if to praise her.
But that strong hand swept down her head and across her cheek, its long, rough fingertips tracing a path down her fair neck and stopping at her collarbone.
Before Yu Chaoxian could savor the smooth and tender touch, Yu Tang almost cried out in surprise. She quickly covered her mouth, and then Yu Chaoxian loosened the bow tie around her neck.
The dark red bow tie was tossed into the air, and time seemed to freeze at that moment. The tie itself seemed to freeze in place as it was tossed upwards. A bullet whizzed through the bow tie, and the resulting gust of wind even made Yu Tang's hair fly wildly.
Yu Tang only looked away when the bow tie fell to the ground.
Finally, the fourth shot was fired. Yu Chaoxian's gaze suddenly focused as he confirmed the enemy sniper's position. His dark eyes revealed a sharp light, like a hawk aiming at its prey.
A shot rang out – followed by a whoosh –
The assassin on the opposite terrace froze for a moment, bright red blood flowing from the black bullet hole in the center of his forehead, but the muscle memory in his hand still made him pull the trigger and fire the last bullet.
The bullet flew towards Yu Chaoxian, and the resulting gust of wind blew down nearby crabapple blossoms, instantly scattering petals onto Yu Tang's face.
The sensation of that instant made Yu Tang think it was blood.
"Yu Chaoxian!" Yu Tang subconsciously reached out to catch Yu Chaoxian's leaning waist, until Yu Chaoxian turned his face. He glanced down at the softness pressed against him and saw Yu Tang crying from behind, hugging the back of his neck.
Hot tears streamed down his neck and back.
The touch was completely unfamiliar; Yu Tang's tears seemed even hotter than her sweat, burning her heart with an itch.
"Why are you crying? I'm not dead." Yu Chaoxian grabbed Yu Tang by the back of her collar with disdain, trying to pull her away.
Yu Tang held him tightly, one hand still resting on his heart.
Is he touching me to see if he still has a heartbeat?
Yu Chaoxian found it amusing and poked her cheek: "What are you touching like that for?"
