The day after the dormitory dinner, it was time for everyone to gather and prepare for military training.
Early in the morning, students from all majors were organized into their first school-wide mobilization meeting since enrollment – military training.
Although it was called a mobilization meeting, it was actually just a meeting to arrange and outline the procedures for military training. The meeting briefly introduced the fifteen-day schedule, and everyone except those with special health conditions was required to attend. Of course, those with special health conditions had to provide formal medical records from a top-tier hospital.
For Shi Jing, being healthy and energetic, participating in military training was a given. What surprised her was that Cai Jiajia, who appeared perfectly healthy, was actually a student claiming to be too ill to participate. Shi Jing had no idea how much of this was genuine, but perhaps losing one student like her wasn't a bad thing.
In the afternoon, the students assembled and were taken to the military training base by buses arranged by the school.
The so-called military training base is a joint venture established by the Beijing Municipal Education Commission and numerous universities specifically for student military training. Students participate in military training here, learning military skills and national defense knowledge.
Because it is jointly run by many schools, a large number of schools participate in military training at this training base every year.
When Shi Jing and her friends arrived at the military training base, students from other schools were already participating in military training. As students from different schools, their training grounds were not in the same place.
However, students from different schools are not completely isolated from each other. If they still have the energy to visit each other after military training, they can certainly exchange ideas.
There are always plenty of energetic and adventurous college students. In just one afternoon, Shi Jing and her friends got wind of it. The people undergoing military training in another location were not from other schools, but students from Beijing Film Academy who had started training two days earlier than them.
As a university known for its abundance of handsome men and beautiful women, Beijing Film Academy easily aroused the curiosity of many top students from universities in Beijing.
On their first day at the military training base, everyone felt a sense of novelty and excitement, but unfortunately, this wasn't a place they could just wander around in. The first day mainly consisted of military training; under the instructors' guidance, everyone learned to fold paper into neat squares, and their personal belongings were checked, with any prohibited items confiscated.
The confiscation of contraband was naturally chaotic, but fortunately, I had done some mental preparation beforehand. After a bit of wit and courage, most of the items that needed to be handed over were surrendered. As for those that were secretly hidden, it was hard to say how long they could remain hidden.
After dinner, everyone rested, but this relaxed and pleasant atmosphere didn't last long. Soon, a message came from the students in the military training program at Beijing Film Academy.
On the first night, the instructors might launch a surprise attack, such as an emergency assembly, and then give them a legitimate reason to punish them.
Looking at the bed covered with neatly folded squares of dough, many students couldn't help but think, "Once these squares are put down, they probably can't be restored. Maybe we shouldn't put them down at all?"
Unexpectedly, the first night was uneventful.
Aside from a few students who woke up one night to find that the tofu blocks they had tried so hard to preserve had collapsed.
Shi Jing didn't have much difficulty with this. Although she wasn't exactly an expert at folding blankets, she managed to fold them properly following the instructor's guidance.
As a college student's military training, standing at attention under the scorching sun is a basic skill. After half a day of standing at attention, everyone's face is red and their backs are drenched in sweat.
At this point, Shi Jing and the other girls in her dorm survived on sunscreen.
After washing up in the morning, everyone made sure to apply a thick layer of sunscreen, and they continued to reapply it during breaks.
Fortunately, the military training base strictly controls students' mobile phones and snacks, but it is quite lenient on general cosmetics and sunscreens.
After standing at attention for half the morning, the instructors trained the students in standing at ease, standing at attention, and marching in formation in the afternoon. Inevitably, there would be one or two troublemakers, but usually, these students would be punished by running a few laps and then behave themselves.
After a day of training, even though Shi Jing considered himself to have good stamina, he was exhausted. Following the rest of the group to the canteen for lunch, another chaotic scramble for food ensued.
It wasn't until they finished washing up that the few people in the dormitory were finally able to rest.
Exhausted from a long day, everyone fell asleep almost immediately, and everyone slept soundly.
However, this peaceful period did not last long, because in the middle of the night, a surprise assembly that had not appeared on the first day took place.
In the middle of the night, a loud whistle rang out, startling Shi Jing so much that he abruptly opened his eyes.
She quickly regained her composure and heard the assembly whistle coming from outside.
After a moment's thought, Shi Jing realized what was happening outside. She wasn't the first to react; others in the next room had also woken up and were calling for someone to get up.
Without hesitation, Shi Jing quickly sat up and tapped on the bed railing.
"Get up immediately, it's emergency assembly time!"
As she spoke, Shi Jing quickly put on her military training uniform and folded her blanket. She moved swiftly, while the others who had been awakened reacted at varying paces.
Nan Zhuowen, who was the slowest to react, was still in a daze. Shi Jing nudged her helplessly and said, "Get up quickly, or you'll be punished by having to run laps if you're late."
The power of running laps must have been too great, because Nan Zhuowen suddenly snapped back to reality: "Aww!"
She suddenly sat up in bed and frantically grabbed her clothes to put them on.
Everyone else was almost done, but Nan Zhuowen's bed was still a mess. Shi Jing couldn't stand it and tidied it up a bit for her. Seeing that students were starting to line up in the open space outside the dormitory, Shi Jing quickly called out to Nan Zhuowen.
"Hurry up, we've already assembled."
"They're here, they're here," Nan Zhuowen said, running out with the others while slamming his hat on his head.
Shi Jing and his roommates didn't arrive early, but thankfully they weren't too late either.
The instructor held a stopwatch in one hand and looked at everyone with a half-smile.
"Too slow!" the instructor said sternly. "Fifteen minutes, a full fifteen minutes, and everyone is still not here."
After hearing the instructor's reprimand, everyone couldn't help but sneak a peek. At this point, the team was still quite disorganized, with many people missing.
A few minutes later, several more people rushed into the formation, looking disheveled. The instructor didn't stop them; he just watched coldly.
Nearly ten minutes later, the team assembled, and the instructor finally gave the order: "Count off."
One by one, the team members called out their numbers, and only then did the squad leader count the number of people.
"Reporting, Instructor: Class 1 of Finance should have 42 students, and 42 students are present. Please give instructions!"
The counting calls rose and fell, with classes assembling at varying speeds. Shi Jing's class could only be considered average. Compared to classes where some students were still missing, their class had gathered all its members, but their speed was anything but fast.
After the basic commands, the instructor, with a serious expression, issued the order: "Attention, everyone! Right turn! Five-kilometer march, let's begin!"
