The high-speed train was very fast; in less than an hour, Shi Jing returned to Tianyuan City from Dingdu.
After arriving at the station, Shi Jing took a taxi home. The house was quiet, and everything was exactly as it had been when Shi Jing left yesterday, so Ms. Yan must not have returned yesterday.
Shi Jing wasn't surprised. Ever since Ms. Yan decided to get married to her boyfriend, the two had been living together in a semi-cohabiting state, and Shi Jing rarely saw her.
She put her belongings and the study materials Rong Yu had prepared for her into her room, changed her clothes, and sent a message to Qi Yan.
Qi Yan quickly replied to her message, saying she was with Qi Shuang. Qi Shuang had been at home since yesterday; her parents were still out trying to find a solution, leaving only the two girls at home.
After thinking for a moment, Shi Jing simply grabbed a schoolbag and headed out.
She didn't go to Qi Yan's and Qi Shuang's houses often, but she knew the way, and Qi Shuang's house wasn't far from Qi Yan's.
It was nearing noon, and there weren't many pedestrians on the bus. It took Shi Jing about twenty minutes to reach the entrance of the Linsen upscale villa complex where the Qi family lived in a taxi. The complex has security guards patrolling 24 hours a day, and visitors must register and confirm their identities with the homeowner.
Shi Jing was only allowed in after registering and confirming at the entrance.
When she arrived at Qi Shuang's house, Qi Yan opened the door for her. Qi Shuang was sitting on the carpet in the living room, looking dejected.
When she saw Jing, she only murmured "Little Jing" once, completely lacking the vitality she once had.
Shi Jing walked to the sofa and sat down on the carpet next to Qi Shuang, comforting her, "Qi Shuang, don't worry too much, your uncle and aunt will handle it."
Qi Yan also sat down on the other side of Qi Shuang, keeping watch over her.
“The family business has been in trouble for a long time, but they didn’t tell me. If it weren’t for the fact that we couldn’t hide it anymore, I would still be foolishly preparing for a trip…” Qi Shuang was not only worried about the family business, but also upset that she couldn’t help at all.
Shi Jing patted her head and comforted her, "They didn't tell you because they didn't want you to worry."
Qi Shuang rested her head on her knees, burying her face in them: "I know, I'm just feeling bad."
It seems like this person is getting stuck on a minor detail.
Shi Jing could probably understand her feelings, so he could only pat her back and comfort her.
In her past life, when her parents passed away, she also struggled with a long period of inner turmoil. She knew it was all the driver's fault, but she couldn't help but wonder if things would have been different if she had been there, if she had stopped her parents from going out…
But in reality, they all knew that this was something they were powerless to change.
"I know you're upset, but it's precisely at times like these that you need to pull yourself together and not worry your aunt and uncle."
She checked the time; it was almost eleven o'clock.
Have you eaten?
Qi Yan shook her head silently; she stayed by Qi Shuang's side, not daring to leave. Shi Jing nodded: "I'll go call and order food."
There aren't many restaurants near the villa area, but there are some that offer delivery services. Shi Jing had experience with this when she was at the Shi family's house, so she knew exactly where to call and order food.
After ordering the food, Shi Jing went to the kitchen and took out some plates, bowls, and chopsticks. The Qi family's housekeeper had tidied things up neatly, so Shi Jing easily found them.
After thinking for a moment, she flipped over three teacups, poured three cups of warm water, and carried them to the living room.
"Hey, have some water and calm down. Things are already like this, so cheer up and stop thinking about it."
Seeing that Qi Shuang didn't move, Shi Jing simply picked up a cup and shoved it into Qi Shuang's hand, not caring that the warm water would burn her.
"After you finish eating, you can do your homework together. Students should do what students should do."
"Huh?" Qi Yan was dumbfounded. She hadn't expected Shi Jing to come over to comfort Qi Shuang, so how did the topic suddenly change so quickly?
Qi Shuang also looked at Shi Jing with a blank expression.
Shi Jing looked at the two people; they were currently innocent and upright.
“At our age, even if we wanted to help our aunts and uncles, there’s nothing we could do. We might as well focus on our studies and make them worry less about us,” Shi Jing said, then asked the next question, “It’s been quite a few days of vacation now, how much of your winter break homework have you done?”
Qi Yan and Qi Shuang were speechless for a moment, remembering that they had just finished the first part of their assignment and didn't know how to answer.
Seeing their expressions, Shi Jing clearly understood the situation. Her main purpose in bringing this up wasn't the homework itself, but rather to distract Qi Shuang, so she didn't think much of it. She looked at Qi Yan and asked, "Where's your homework? Are you going to review it with me or have your family bring it over?"
"Let my family deliver it..."
This method is really good; mentioning homework finally diverted Qi Shuang's attention somewhat. Seeing this, Qi Yan finally felt a little better and decided to accompany her, no matter what.
Thirty minutes later, the restaurant food was delivered. Shi Jing took out the food and laid it out, then brought out bowls, plates, and chopsticks, inviting the two of them to eat.
"Come and eat quickly, then hurry up and do your homework."
"Coming!" Qi Yan replied, pulling Qi Shuang over.
The three sat around the dining table. Shi Jing ladled a bowl of soup for Qi Shuang: "Have some soup." Then he ladled a bowl for Qi Yan as well.
She ate by herself, occasionally glancing at Qi Shuang. Fortunately, Qi Shuang stopped being so dejected and ate some food.
After dinner, Shi Jing cleared the table, and the three of them spread out their books. Qi Yan and Qi Shuang had their winter vacation homework in front of them, while Shi Jing had study materials—a gift that Rong Yu had specially prepared for her, which she had just brought back from Dingdu.
Rong Yu, being a top student herself, chose books for Shi Jing that were very suitable for Shi Jing's current studies, and Shi Jing read them with great interest.
After learning a knowledge point, look at the two doing their homework. Qi Yan has only done two pages, and Qi Shuang has only done one and a half pages. Neither of them is very efficient.
However, since both of them seemed quite focused, she didn't disturb them and continued reading.
Qi Shuang did her homework for a while, but got stuck on a question and couldn't help but scratch her head. She looked at Qi Yan and then at Shi Jing, only to find that Shi Jing was doing her workbook.
Her commotion was quite loud, and Shi Jing noticed it quickly.
"What's wrong?" Shi Jing asked.
"There's a question I can't answer." Qi Shuang said, glancing at the problem Shi Jing was working on. "What is this? Isn't this the workbook the school gave us?"
"What?" Shi Jing looked at the other person and found that their attention was focused on the workbook in his hand. He smiled and explained, "This is a workbook that Brother Yu found for me. The questions are pretty good, quite challenging. If you're interested, I'll let you do them later..."
"No, I'd better do my winter break homework first," Qi Shuang quickly waved her hand in refusal.
Shi Jing didn't insist, and instructed, "Leave any questions you don't know how to do blank for now, and we'll discuss them together later."
