Nian Shihua happened to be hunting in the woods that day.
Meat was a rare treat in the countryside, and Nian Shihua's childhood dream was to become a general. He was skilled in martial arts and swordsmanship, so he loved hunting from a young age.
He chased a rabbit into the woods where Sang Ruo was, but because there were too many weeds, he didn't know where the rabbit had run off to.
Nian Shihua looked around and, finding no one else there, listened intently to any sounds.
Suddenly, a "rustling" sound came from a tree not far away, and Nian Shihua's eyes lit up.
That sound must come from a pretty big bird. If I shoot it back, at least I'll get my fill of talking.
He was thinking that he was about to draw his bow and arrow at the tree when, just as he was about to let go, Sang Ruo's small face appeared in front of him.
Nian Shihua was startled and subconsciously tilted the arrow that was about to be released to the side slightly.
Sang Ruo had just picked some fruit and peeked out when she saw a sharp sword shooting towards her.
Her pupils contracted, and she gripped the branch tightly in her hand, forgetting even to close her eyes.
Until a "whoosh" sounded as the arrow narrowly missed her ear and finally embedded itself in the tree behind her.
Sang Ruo then realized she was scared. Her legs went weak with fear, and she slipped and fell. Fortunately, she managed to hold onto the tree branch tightly.
"Ah! Help!"
Nian Shihua only reacted when he heard Sang Ruo's shouts.
He hurriedly ran to the tree and stretched out his arm: "Girl, let go and I'll catch you."
If he hadn't managed to deflect the arrow to the side in time, Sang Ruo would probably have been killed by him right now.
Sang Ruo looked at his small body and hesitated.
Will he be able to catch her? She climbed a bit too high to reach bigger fruit. She probably won't die from the fall, but she'll definitely be unable to move for a while.
When Nian Shihua saw her hesitate, he assumed she was just a shy girl.
"Don't be afraid, girl. I'm a good person. You can jump without worry. I won't tell anyone."
Seeing his confident assurances, Sang Ruo was speechless. Was she afraid he wasn't a good person? Was she afraid he would hurt her?
"Fine, it's all the same whether I stick my head out or lock it," Sang Jiang thought, closing her eyes and releasing the branch in her hand.
"ah!"
She cried out as she fell. After ten seconds, Sang Ru frowned in surprise. Why didn't it hurt when she fell? And it didn't feel like she was being held.
She slowly opened her eyes and saw that she was lying steadily on Nian Shihua's body.
Sang Ruo's smiling face instantly turned red.
"Miss, could you please get up?"
Nian Shihua looked at Sang Ruo on his body and spoke with difficulty.
Although Sang Ruo wasn't heavy, the impact from that height still gave him quite a bit of trouble.
His words made Sang Ruo's face turn even redder. She pressed against Nian Shihua's chest and slowly got up.
"Thank you for saving my life, young master."
Sang Ruo curtsied to Nian Shihua.
Over the years, Madam Sang had been teaching her various manners and etiquette, so that she wouldn't be clueless when she returned to the capital.
Looking at Sang Ruo's delicate face and her polite manner towards him, Nian Shihua was at a loss for words.
He scratched his head sheepishly and said, "You're too kind, young lady. If I hadn't almost accidentally hurt you, you wouldn't have fallen. It's all my fault."
Looking at his honest and simple appearance, Sang Ruo couldn't help but chuckle.
From then on, whenever Sang Ruo went to that forest to gather herbs, Nian Shihua would always be there hunting.
If he gets injured, he should ask Sang Ruo to bandage and treat him.
She never saw Nian Shihua again after Sang Ruo was taken back to Kyoto...
