"Cough cough... cough cough..." Sang Jiang coughed a few times, coughing up all the water that had gotten stuck in her throat.
She weakly opened her eyes, then tightly closed them again.
"Open your eyes if you're awake." Long Jingyu sighed almost inaudibly.
He saw the fleeting expectation and despair in Sang Jiang's eyes.
Yesterday, Wei Qing went back and told him that he felt something was going to happen when he saw Xiao Jiang Jiang, so he came to the palace early in the morning to see Sang Jiang. As a result, he saw Sang Jiang rush into the lotus pond from afar.
Seeing her resolute expression, Long Jingyu felt a dull pain in his heart. Without hesitation, he jumped into the lotus pond as well.
The shadowy figure who was about to emerge from the shadows saw Long Jingyu and silently retreated to report back to Long Jingchen.
When Long Jingyu pulled Sang Jiang out of the water, she had already suffocated and fainted. With his hands trembling slightly, he carried Sang Jiang and used his lightness skill to rush towards his palace.
He had killed so many people before without ever being afraid, but now he found himself actually afraid.
He held Sang Jiang very gently, knowing that the little girl was quite delicate and that he was quite strong, so he was afraid of hurting her if he used too much force.
His bodyguards had already gone to find the imperial physician when Long Jingyu left with Sang Jiang in his arms.
Long Jingyu placed Sang Jiang on his bed in his palace. Looking at the girl's pale face, he realized why he had been so eager to see her these past few days.
I think I've fallen for her.
They didn't have much contact. If he liked Sang Jiang, it was probably because of the look in her eyes when they first met.
Sang Jiang's eyes are truly beautiful; even now, with them tightly closed, they still possess an exceptionally beautiful curve. Her usually curled eyelashes, perhaps because they are wet, are now slightly drooping.
Long Jingyu sat down on the edge of the bed and held Sang Jiang's small hands tightly. He looked anxiously at Sang Jiang's increasingly pale face.
"Ouch! Please be gentle! Ouch, my old bones are killing me."
The imperial physician, who had just been thrown in by the guards, rubbed his buttocks. Before he could even stand up, Long Jingyu pulled him over.
After examining Sang Jiang, the imperial physician went straight to brew the medicine, which was now ready and served.
Sang Jiang frowned slightly as she smelled the strong aroma of Chinese medicine. If she wasn't mistaken, this unpleasant-smelling stuff was meant for her to drink.
"Will death bring relief?" Long Jingyu continued when she remained silent: "I started going to the battlefield when I was a teenager. Outsiders only know my great achievements, but they don't know what I did to survive."
Sang Jiang kept her eyes closed and remained silent.
"I don't know what Wei Qing told you, but I want to tell you that if you die, you will really have nothing left."
Sang Jiang slowly opened her eyes. She looked at Long Jingyu and asked in a hoarse voice, "Does a dead person still have a soul?"
Long Jingyu was a little confused by her seemingly nonsensical question.
He then realized that her suicide attempt was probably related to this very issue.
Thinking this, Long Jingyu scoffed and retorted, "Are you kidding me? I've killed so many people, do you think they don't want revenge? If souls truly exist, why haven't I seen a single one?"
Sang Jiang fell silent.
As a modern person, she knew better than anyone that there was no such thing as a soul after death.
So, is it really true that she can never go back?
As Long Jingyu watched her eyes slowly empty once again, just as he was about to say something to comfort her, a guard walked in.
"Your Highness, Minister Wei has arrived."
Sang Jiang's pupils trembled slightly when she heard the name Wei Qing.
