Chapter 7 The Empty House

Zhuang Yan couldn't possibly have missed it, which only means that he deliberately didn't answer her calls.

So much time has passed, and he's still not over it? What on earth is he doing?

"Miss, we've arrived in Chengdu. Where do you plan to go back to?"

Xia Wan originally planned to apologize to her father at the Xia family first, but because Zhuang Yan kept ignoring her calls, she became annoyed and wanted to confront him face to face.

—Is it appropriate for a grown man like you to act so petty and nitpicky?

She was just absent, it's not like she eloped with someone.

I've already gone to the trouble of contacting you, so why aren't you returning my calls?

Fuming with anger, Xia Wan told Zhuang Yan the location of the apartment building, which was the home she shared with him.

The corridor was quiet, and there was no one around at this time. Xia Wan didn't take out her key to open the door but rang the doorbell directly. She rang it for a long time, but there was no response from inside.

Xia Wan stomped her foot, staring at the door with a gloomy gaze, as if she wanted to stare a hole through it.

She's already at the door, and she doesn't even open it?

Seeing that she was angry, the driver who had been following her cautiously asked, "Miss, is Mr. Zhuang not here?"

Xia Wan was taken aback: If he wasn't here, where could he have gone? Could he have gone back to the Zhuang family?

Zhuang Yan disliked returning to the Zhuang family home and rarely went back during holidays, because there was simply no place for him there.

Xia Wan understood better than anyone how difficult Zhuang Yan's situation was, yet she still abandoned him at such an important occasion yesterday, making him a laughingstock and subject to blame and scolding from his parents.

Xia Wan paused for a moment, then found a spare key under a flowerpot by the door.

Zhuang Yan prepared this key for her because she always forgot to take it.

The spare key had been here for a long time, but this was the first time Xia Wan had used it. Every time she came home, Zhuang Yan was either by her side or at home, and she only needed to press the doorbell to open the door.

Xia Wan took out her key and opened the door. The house was pitch black. As the light came on... it was still the same house she had lived in for a year, but she always felt that something was missing. There was a sense of incongruity everywhere, which made her feel uncomfortable.

Xia Wan first noticed that the shoes by the door were missing, the kitchen was empty, the water glass on the table was gone, and even the books and documents on the bookshelf had all disappeared.

Anyone who didn't know better would think a thief had broken in. Even the most oblivious person would notice something was wrong. Xia Wan rushed into Zhuang Yan's bedroom and found the wardrobe completely empty.

Xia Wan stared blankly at the empty wardrobe for a long time.

Why did Zhuang Yan leave? If he's gone, will he come back?

In the past, if Zhuang Yan hadn't slept by this time, he would sit at his computer desk and work. When he had free time, he would clean the house thoroughly, leaving no corner or detail untouched. He was a great cook, and if she woke up hungry in the middle of the night and called him, he would make her a diet meal, considering that girls need to maintain their figure.

Everyone says diet meals are hard to eat, but Zhuang Yan makes them very well, and she always finishes them.

The toiletries in the bathroom were gone. The cups, slippers, towels... that they used were all prepared in advance by Zhuang Yan. They were all couple items that Xia Wan thought looked nice, so she never changed them. Now, only her own items were left.

There used to be a decorative piece on the TV cabinet, which they made in a ceramics shop during their first date, and it sat there for a year.

She usually wouldn't even glance at these things and often ignored them, but when they were gone, she suddenly felt they became important.

Xia Wan looked around the room and finally found a ring box in the trash can. She picked it up and opened it.

That was the engagement ring Zhuang Yan had prepared long ago, but now he threw it away.

Xia Wan gripped the ring tightly in her hand without saying a word.

The driver looked worried, noticing that Xia Wan's eyes were red, whether from anger or grievance.

I thought Zhuang Yan's announcement of breaking off the engagement at the engagement banquet was just a momentary impulse, and that he would be able to adjust himself in a few hours. I never expected that he would move out without saying a word.

It seems he's serious about breaking off the engagement.

I never expected someone who is usually so quiet to be so ruthless in their actions. Even a rabbit will bite when cornered, let alone a person.

"Miss, where are you staying tonight?"

Xia Wan was too weak to sit down. For some unknown reason, she put the ring on her middle finger and then took out her phone to call Zhuang Yan again.

She tried calling a second time when the call didn't go through, but the system indicated that no one was answering, proving that Zhuang Yan hadn't blocked her. When the phone call still didn't go through, she tried a video call. Finally, just as she was about to call for the seventh time, Zhuang Yan answered.

"What is it?" The hoarse voice was filled with exhaustion.

Xia Wan wanted to curse, but upon hearing his voice, she swallowed the words that were on the tip of her tongue: "Where are you now?"

"It's almost 3 a.m., do you still want to come looking for me?"

Didn't you come to find me?

Seeing that Xia Wan didn't say anything, Zhuang Yan continued, "I'm already asleep. We can talk tomorrow. Bye."

Xia Wan stared blankly at her phone, which had already gone black. Had he just died like that?

After the call ended, Xia Wan realized how cold Zhuang Yan's attitude had been during the call; he seemed like a completely different person. She was furious and wanted to call again, but this time the other party simply turned off his phone.

Xia Wan turned to the driver and said, "I'll stay here tonight, you can go back."

After the driver left, Xia Wan sent Zhuang Yan a text message, asking him to come find her the next morning.

Xia Wan didn't sleep well that night, tossing and turning in bed. She finally felt sleepy, but it was already dawn.

Xia Wan got up despite her headache, picked up her phone and saw it was only seven o'clock. While washing up, she kept checking her phone, trying to see if Zhuang Yan had replied to her text message, but no matter how many times she checked, there was nothing.

At eight o'clock, Xia Wan couldn't help but call Zhuang Yan.

This time, Zhuang Yan answered very quickly.

Xia Wan's patience had run out, and her tone was sharp: "When are you coming over?"

"I'm having breakfast. If you want to see me, go to the coffee shop on Zhong'er Street. It's not far from where you are."

"Didn't I tell you to come find me?"

Zhuang Yan: "You're the one who wanted to talk to me. If you don't want to, that's fine. I'm busy today."

Worried that Zhuang Yan would hang up on her again like before, Xia Wan could only suppress her anger and grit her teeth to say, "Okay, then see you at nine."

After the call ended, Xia Wan put on makeup and chose a flamboyant red dress to make her complexion look better.

Seeing that it was already 8:50, she calmly put on her high heels, hailed a taxi, and went to the coffee shop.

When I arrived, Zhuang Yan was already there. There was a cup of coffee in front of him. The coffee was still very hot. Zhuang Yan put two packets of sugar into the coffee and stirred it with a spoon.

It was a very ordinary action, but for some reason, he made it look very pleasing to the eye.

Zhuang Yan's remarks today were quite different; at least they attracted more attention than usual.

Xia Wan slowed her pace and took a closer look. She noticed that Zhuang Yan's hairstyle was different from usual, with his forehead exposed, making his features appear more defined. He looked healthier than her, and it was clear that he had slept well the night before and had not been affected in the slightest.
