Surrounded
"You're in trouble too? What happened?" Lu Chen's heart tightened suddenly.
“As planned, we left traces on our way to point 1. But we discovered that a team had been following us the whole time, neither too close nor too far.” Chen Mo’s voice was low, clearly indicating that he was also in a tense situation. “They didn’t chase after the fake targets we left behind, but instead stuck to us relentlessly.”
“We tried to shake them off, but they were very good at tracking us. Now it’s dark, and we’re stuck on a riverbank, afraid to move.”
Lu Chen quickly sketched out a map in his mind. A riverbank meant open terrain with almost no place to hide. Once discovered, it would be certain death.
Do you know which team it is?
"I don't know," Chen Mo replied. "The other side is very cunning and hasn't shown themselves yet. But judging from their methods, they're definitely a tough opponent."
One was cornered by Qin Feng in the valley, while the other two were targeted by an unknown group on the riverbank.
Less than twelve hours into the game, Team Nine was already in dire straits, surrounded by enemies on all sides.
"Brother Chen, what should we do?" Wang Lei asked anxiously, as if he were an ant on a hot pan.
Lu Chen didn't answer him, but calmly said into the radio, "Chen Mo, you and Sun Yi stop moving immediately and find a place to lie in wait as concealed as possible. Do not expose yourselves before dawn. I will find a way to meet up with you."
"But Captain, what about your side..." Chen Mo was a little worried.
"Execute the order!" Lu Chen's tone left no room for argument.
"……yes!"
After ending the call, Lu Chen leaned against the cold stone wall and closed his eyes.
The situation was a hundred times worse than he had imagined.
Qin Feng's Dragon Team, like a ferocious tiger, blocked their path. Meanwhile, Chen Mo and Sun Yi were being targeted by an unknown venomous snake. Adding to this, Zhang Mang was seriously injured and unconscious, leaving the entire team with virtually no mobility.
Give up?
If they press the distress signal button now, Zhang Mang can receive timely medical treatment, and they can escape danger.
But the price was that all their efforts over the past two months had come to naught. He, Wang Lei, Chen Mo, Sun Yi, and Zhang Mang, who had just risked his life for the team, all had to slink away and go home in disgrace.
He remembered what his father had said to him at the shooting range.
"The gun in your hand is not a toy to show off your skills. It is a weapon you use to protect your comrades and defend your country."
"When you pick it up, you must be prepared to give your life for it at any time."
Protect your comrades...
Lu Chen opened his eyes and glanced at Zhang Mang, who was lying on the ground, breathing weakly.
If he gives up now, what kind of comrade-in-arms would he be? He would just be a deserter who bows his head in the face of difficulties.
No.
He cannot give up.
Absolutely not.
"Wang Lei," he said.
"Yes, Brother Chen!"
How much food and water do we have?
Wang Lei checked his backpack: "There are four compressed biscuits left, and one and a half bottles of water. Zhang Mang's bag is on it. We're running low on supplies."
"Where's the ammunition?"
"I have three magazines left, how about you?"
“I’m about the same.” Lu Chen frowned.
Their supplies and ammunition are only enough to last them until noon tomorrow. If they don't find a way to break out, they'll just have to wait to die here.
"Brother Chen, how about... we fight him to the death!" Wang Lei said through gritted teeth. "Let's take advantage of the darkness, sneak up to the other side, and take down Qin Feng and his bastards! We can take one of them, it's better than dying here in misery!"
This is the most foolish method, and also the last resort.
Lu Chen shook his head: "There are only two of us, and we also have to take care of Zhang Mang. A direct attack would be suicide."
"What should we do?!" Wang Lei was so anxious that he kept scratching his head.
Lu Chen didn't speak. He took out the map he got from the iron box from his backpack and studied it carefully by the faint moonlight coming in from outside.
His finger kept circling the target point, number 2, which was the valley where they were now.
Why would Qin Feng go to such great lengths to set up such a scheme in order to protect this valley?
Is it just because this is target point number 2 that it's worth 20 points?
wrong.
Given Qin Feng's personality, he either doesn't do something, or he does it thoroughly. If it were just for 20 points, he wouldn't need to make things so complicated. He must have other motives.
Lu Chen's gaze followed the terrain of the valley, extending deeper into the map.
At the end of the valley lies a river. And this river happens to be the only way to reach target point 3—that 30-point swamp.
A thought flashed through Lu Chen's mind like lightning.
He understood!
Qin Feng's real purpose was not this 20-point point 2, but to use this valley to establish an advance base!
He wanted to take both points 2 and 3 in one go!
This valley is easy to defend and difficult to attack, and its proximity to water makes it the best resting point in the entire area. As long as they hold this place, they can wait and plan their attack on point 3 at their leisure. They can even use it as a trap to ambush any other teams trying to reach point 3.
What an enormous appetite! What a vicious scheme!
Lu Chen gasped. He had underestimated Qin Feng. After his previous defeat, this guy had not only learned teamwork, but his tactical thinking had also become terrifying.
But at the same time, Lu Chen also saw a glimmer of opportunity.
Since Qin Feng's target is point 3, he can't possibly exhaust all his forces in this valley. He will definitely send people out to scout and even attack point 3.
If he divides his forces, his defensive strength will be weakened.
That's their chance to break through!
"Wang Lei, come here." Lu Chen beckoned to Wang Lei, lowered his voice, and told him his analysis and plan.
"What? Brother Chen, you mean... we're supposed to stay here and wait for Qin Feng and the others to split up, and then we can sneak away from behind?" Wang Lei was incredulous after hearing this.
“It’s not about running away.” A dangerous glint flashed in Lu Chen’s eyes. “It’s about counterattacking.”
"Counterattack? Just the two of us, plus an injured person?" Wang Dalei wondered if Lu Chen had been stunned by the impact.
"Who said there are only two of us?" Lu Chen laughed, a laugh that made Wang Lei feel a little uneasy.
He pointed to the valley, at the equipment left behind by the teams that Qin Feng and his group had just "eliminated".
"Those are our weapons."
He then pointed to his head.
"And here too."
"War is not just about fighting people, but also about fighting their minds."
Looking at Lu Chen's confident demeanor, Wang Lei still felt a bit uncertain, but the resentment and frustration in his heart were ignited by something called "hope".
"Okay! Brother Chen, whatever you say, I'll do! I'm entrusting my life to you today!"
"Don't rush to hand it over to me." Lu-Chen patted his shoulder. "The first thing we need to do now is survive. You stay here and guard Zhang Mang. I'm going out for a bit."
"What are you doing going out? It's too dangerous!" Wang Lei grabbed him.
“I’m going to find some ‘reinforcements’ for us.” Lu Chen smiled mysteriously, then pointed to his ear. “Don’t worry, I won’t go too far. If anything happens, use this to contact us.”
After saying that, he left his rifle to Wang Lei, took only a pistol and a dagger, and disappeared silently into the night like a raccoon.
In the crevice of the rock, only Wang Lei and the unconscious Zhang Mang remained.
Wang Lei, holding two guns, stood nervously guarding the exit, his ears perked up, listening intently to the slightest sound outside.
He didn't know what Lu Chen was going to do, but he knew that from this moment on, the fate of their Group Nine rested entirely on Lu Chen's shoulders.
The night grew deeper and deeper.
The valley was deathly silent, save for the occasional chirping of unknown insects.
On the opposite cliff, Qin Feng's Dragon Team members were taking turns keeping watch.
"Captain, do you think Lu Chen and the others might have already died in the fall?" A team member yawned and asked Qin Feng in a low voice.
Qin Feng was leaning against the rock with his eyes closed, resting, when he heard this and opened his eyes.
"No," he said with certainty. "Lu Chen won't die that easily."
"They must be hiding now. Should we send people down to search for them? I won't feel at ease until we find them."
"No need." Qin Feng shook his head. "They're trapped like turtles in a jar now, they can't cause any trouble. Our real enemy isn't them."
His gaze was fixed on the swamp at point 3.
"Pass down my orders: let the second and third squads get some rest. We'll set off at daybreak to get those 30 points. Leave one squad here to guard the area."
"yes!"
Qin Feng closed his eyes again. In his view, Lu Chen was already like meat on a chopping block, no longer a threat. What he needed to consider now was how to achieve the highest-scoring objective in the entire assessment with the least cost.
Unbeknownst to him, just a hundred meters away in the darkness, a black shadow was rapidly weaving among the "eliminated" corpses.
Lu Chen's movements were extremely fast and light.
He was like a corpse collector, calmly examining each "corpse".
He was looking for something.
Soon, he found what he was looking for on a eliminated team member—a perfectly intact individual radio and several high-explosive grenades.
He found a sniper rifle loaded with bullets on another body.
Looking at the "spoils of war" in his hands, Lu Chen revealed a cold smile.
Qin Feng, don't you like sniping?
Don't you like to use landslides to bury us alive?
Now, let's have some fun.
The game has only just begun.
