Chapter Seventy-Seven: The Prime Minister's Birthday Banquet

After Nan Tianba and the others left the capital, Nan Wusi's life did not change much. He was still either receiving guests at Mengyifang or constantly improving his various skills in the courtyard.

Ouyang Xinxi delivered the invitation that day, inviting the old lady, Nan Wusi, to attend her grandmother's birthday banquet. Although it had been mentioned verbally that day, banquets in such prominent families always required an invitation to attend.

Nan Wusi also specially selected a set of clothes suitable for the elderly from the system store, and also specially matched a set of jewelry.

She was going to support her good friend, so naturally she had to give her something presentable.

Soon it was time for the birthday banquet of the old lady of the Prime Minister's residence. Nan Wusi helped his grandmother into the carriage. The old lady was wearing a new dress that Nan Wusi had specially made for her a few days ago. She had been reluctant to wear it, but she wore it specially to attend the banquet today.

“Grandmother, it seems like you haven’t attended any banquets in a long time.” In Nan Wusi’s memory, it seemed like her grandmother always stayed at home and rarely went out to socialize.

"That's true, but I have a long-standing relationship with the old lady of the Prime Minister's residence, so I should attend her birthday celebration."

"I see. But why have I never heard my grandmother mention it before?" Nan Wusi had always thought that his family was not familiar with the Prime Minister's residence.

"These are all old stories, let's not talk about them." Nan Wusi's grandmother shook her head, clearly not wanting to bring up the past.

"Grandmother, tell me, I'm just listening." Nan Wusi began to whine.

“You’ve never been interested in these things before, why do you want to hear about them now?” Nan Wusi’s grandmother looked at her lovingly.

"I was thoughtless and ignorant in the past."

"It's alright, it's really not a big deal. Grandmother also had her youthful days." The old lady began to speak slowly.

"Back then, I actually had a very good relationship with the old lady of the Prime Minister's mansion, after all, we grew up together. But later, we fell out because of a man and eventually went our separate ways."

"It's laughable, really. We were fighting so fiercely back then, it seemed like we were both set on marrying that man, but in the end, he didn't like either of us at all and married another woman instead." The old lady found it somewhat amusing when she recalled those years.

"It wasn't until later, when I met your grandfather, that I was able to move on from that failed relationship. She then married the previous prime minister, who is now the prime minister's father."

"We didn't speak to each other for many years afterward, but now that we're both quite old, we don't care so much about these past events anymore."

Nan Wusi listened attentively, never expecting that her grandmother and Ouyang Xinxi's grandmother had such a past.

"So, is Grandmother planning to make peace today?"

Unexpectedly, Grandmother shook her head, "After so many years, it doesn't matter whether we reconcile or not."

"Oh." Nan Wusi seemed to understand but not quite.

As the grandfather and grandson were talking, the carriage arrived at the gate of the Prime Minister's residence.

Nan Wusi jumped off the carriage first, then turned around and helped his grandmother off the carriage.

"Grandmother, be careful." Nan Wusi carefully supported his grandmother.

After getting out of the car, the old lady patted Nan Wusi's hand to comfort him.

Ye Zi had already stepped forward to hand over the invitation, and then someone immediately led them to the banquet hall.

This was Nan Wusi's first time entering the Prime Minister's residence. Although he had escorted Ouyang Xinxi back to the Prime Minister's residence many times before, Nan Wusi had never been inside.

Nan Wusi met Ouyang Xinxi at the entrance of the banquet hall, but she seemed too busy, so the two only exchanged a brief greeting before Ouyang Xinxi had a servant lead them directly to their seats.

The two were seated next to the head of the table, while the old lady of the Prime Minister's residence was sitting and chatting with others.

The two elderly people naturally exchanged pleasantries upon meeting. At their age, only their children were by their side, and those past events were nothing more than fleeting memories. They only hoped that their deceased loved ones could live a little longer.

Nan Wusi knew that Ouyang Xinxi's grandmother had been ill for some time, and upon seeing her today, it was still clear that her condition had not fully recovered, although her spirits seemed to be quite good.

The conversation among the elderly is usually about their children and grandchildren, so naturally the topic turned to Ouyang Xinxi and Nan Wusi.

“I didn’t want to have a big celebration, but my son insisted that a birthday celebration should be lively. Fortunately, my granddaughter is quite capable and took on the responsibility herself, which makes me very happy.”

“I’ve met Xinxi before, and she’s really quite good. She’s well-behaved, sensible, and polite. You have a wonderful granddaughter.”

“Your granddaughter is just as outstanding. I’ve also heard that she owns her own clothing shop, and her jobs as a tailor are extremely difficult to come by. She has a great reputation throughout the capital.”

“Wu Si is indeed a thoughtful and capable child, and I am happy for his achievements.”

"I never expected that our granddaughter would become such a good friend. It can be said that the regret of that year has been resolved." The old lady of the Prime Minister's Mansion sighed as she said this. It was all because she was ignorant back then, otherwise she would not have lost her best friend.

Nan Wusi's grandmother fell silent for a long time before finally saying, "Those are all in the past."

Nan Wusi sat obediently to the side, not daring to interrupt the conversation between the two old ladies.

She looked around and spotted quite a few familiar faces, but she was surprised to see Xiao Mu and Xiao Yi as well.

It's not unusual for Xiao Mu, Ouyang Jiangli's lover, to be here, but why is Xiao Yi here?

Nothing went wrong until the end of the banquet, which relieved Nan Wusi. She had been worried sick about Ouyang Xinxi, fearing someone might deliberately cause trouble and disrupt the banquet. But it seemed she had been overthinking it.

After the banquet, many people began to gather in twos and threes to chat. Nan Wusi also planned to get up and move around, so she told her grandmother and then got up and walked towards the garden.

But before she could take two steps on the road, she bumped into a maid who happened to be carrying wine, which spilled all over her.

"Please forgive me, Miss, I didn't mean it." The maid immediately knelt down, trembling as she begged for forgiveness.

"It's alright, you didn't do it on purpose." Nan Wusi helped her up, after all, it wasn't a big deal.

"What's going on?" Ouyang Xinxi naturally noticed this as well, so she walked over and asked the maid.

"It's alright, Xinxi, I accidentally bumped into Chengjiu's maid." Nan Wusi didn't want to be laughed at, as many people's eyes were now on them.

"Sisi, your clothes are all wet. Let me take you to change," Ouyang Xinxi said. She had specially prepared a rest room just in case.

"Okay." Nan Wusi nodded; her clothes were definitely too wet to wear anymore.
