Chapter 3 Job Hunting 1

The two worked together to move their things to their living quarters. Wang Yitong thanked Chen Dong and went to his room to borrow his computer. As soon as she entered the room, Wang Yitong saw the folding bed. She said to Chen Dong apologetically, "Brother Chen, I'm so sorry that you gave me your room and now you have to sleep on the folding bed."

Chen Dong smiled and waved his hand, saying, "It's no big deal, don't worry about it. Ah Huang and I live together, and this folding bed comes in handy. Besides, we both love playing games, so I can team up with him." As he said that, he also made a victory gesture.

Wang Yitong was infected by Chen Dong's optimism and felt a little relieved. She turned on her computer, logged into 51job and Zhaopin, and carefully screened jobs. Chen Dong watched from the side, occasionally giving her some advice. When he saw that Wang Yitong applied for a company very close to where she lived, Chen Dong nodded and said, "This company is good. It's close and convenient for work."

Wang Yitong smiled and replied, "Yes, I think it's a good fit too." She continued submitting resumes, mostly for office clerk and clerical jobs. After finishing her applications, she stumbled upon a position for a customer service specialist. After reviewing the requirements, she felt she was a good fit and decisively submitted her resume.

After submitting her resume, Wang Yitong and Chen Dong struck up a conversation. She gratefully said to him, "Brother Chen, thank you for all your help. I'm so sorry I've caused you so much trouble." Chen Dong quickly waved his hand and said, "Don't say that, Yitong. We're alumni, and helping each other is only natural. Besides, I didn't do anything, so don't take it too personally."

At this moment, footsteps were heard outside. It was the other alumni returning. Wang Yitong and Chen Dong walked out of the room and greeted them. Li Cheng and Zhang Yun saw Wang Yitong and enthusiastically started chatting with her.

Li Cheng smiled and said to Wang Yitong, "Yitong, now that you're here, feel free to stay here. If you need anything, just go find Chen Dong; he'll definitely help you." Zhang Yun echoed, "Yes, Yitong. Chen Dong is a very kind man. He even gave up his room for you. You should really thank him."

Wang Yitong felt even more embarrassed after hearing this. She looked at Chen Dong with gratitude in her eyes. Chen Dong felt her gaze and said with a smile: "Don't praise me, I will be embarrassed. Yitong, don't listen to them, I just did what I should do."

Afterward, Chen Dong patted Wang Yitong on the shoulder and motioned for her to return to her room to rest. Wang Yitong nodded and returned to her room. Lying on her bed, she reflected on her experiences today, her heart filled with gratitude and warmth. Although she had just arrived in a new environment, with the help of Chen Dong and other alumni, she felt that she was not alone.

Chen Dong felt a warm feeling in his heart as he watched Wang Yitong's back. He hoped that Wang Yitong could find a satisfactory job as soon as possible and start a new life.

After Wang Yitong returned to her room, she couldn't wait to call her mother. Because her mother was busy working during the day, she could only answer the landline phone when she got home at night.

Wang Yitong's mother is the eldest in her family, with two younger sisters and two younger brothers. Among her relatives, hers is the only one with relatively poor financial circumstances. Her second aunt and uncle work at the county power plant, earning a stable income; her fourth aunt and uncle are respected teachers at the county high school; her eldest uncle and aunt run a fruit and vegetable business in a suburban town in Le City; and her youngest uncle, a graduate student, has a successful career in software design and development in Shanghai and is the most financially well-off of her relatives.

Wang Yitong's family enjoyed a period of prosperity when she was a child. Her father contracted the elementary school cafeteria, and the family also had an orchard where they sold fruit seedlings. She remembers that when she was in fourth grade, crisp red plums fetched 10 yuan per jin (approximately 100g). Even at a discount, the wholesale price could reach 50 cents per jin (approximately 100g). Furthermore, the family also had fruit seedlings for sale.

However, the good times didn't last long. Her father developed a gambling addiction and lost all the family's money. Later, the elementary school moved to the village, and her father went to work in the coal mines. He finally stopped gambling and worked hard to support the family. Although the family spent 50,000 yuan on a house in the village, its remote location, over an hour's walk from the main street, made life very inconvenient. If they had listened to relatives' advice and bought the street-level shop, they could have moved in and rented out the ground floor for additional income.

Wang Yitong said to her mother, "Dad wasn't born to make money. He's short-sighted and only sees immediate benefits. He only wants one person to feed the whole family. We can live like this thanks to the help of our relatives on my grandmother's side. My relatives on my father's side are unreliable. My grandparents favor boys over girls, and that's not good for you either."

But her mother, Chen Yin, always said, "You've already married someone like him, so what else can you do? You just need to study hard and get out of here."

Whenever Wang Yitong thought about this, she felt a pang of pain. On the one hand, she hated her own uselessness, on the other hand, she hated her father's incompetence, and even more so, her mother's self-pity, never considering that she could rely on herself. Sometimes she kept thinking that if her mother had just asked for a divorce, she would still depend on her mother even if she had nothing. And she also believed that as long as her mother went out and worked on her own, since her grandparents had supported her through tailoring training and junior high school, she would not be unable to find a job. If she found a job, she would not be so focused on the small plot of land.

During the first semester of my freshman year, my father had an accident in a coal mine and was sent to West China University of Technology for treatment along with other workers. Fortunately, he survived, but his hand suffered a level 6 disability. His university tuition was subsequently covered by his company.

"Mom, have you eaten? I've arrived in Chengdu and live with a few senior brothers. The rent is not expensive, 350 yuan a month. I have started looking for a job, so you don't have to worry about me. You have to take care of yourself and don't forget to eat." Wang Yitong said with concern.
