Chapter 8 I wasn't thinking about him, really.
Lu Fengqing opened her mouth, "I..."
"Niannian!" Old Master Lu exclaimed excitedly, "You promised your grandfather!"
Lu Fengqing was startled and quickly said, "Grandpa, you misunderstand. I didn't miss him. Really, so many years have passed. I had completely forgotten about him if you hadn't mentioned him."
Lu Fengqing repeated herself several times and made repeated assurances before Old Master Lu's emotions gradually calmed down.
"Silly child. Listen to your grandfather. Your grandfather will not harm you. The Gu family... is not a good place for you."
"I know." Lu Fengqing held back her tears, gently grasping the old man's withered hands, her smile tender. "Niannian will listen to her grandfather. Niannian promises to get married before the end of the year. Niannian doesn't have a father, wouldn't it be nice for her grandfather to walk her down the aisle at her wedding?"
Grandpa Lu nodded repeatedly, "Good, good."

In the afternoon, Madam Tang brought Tang Xingzhou to visit Old Master Lu, but Old Master Lu refused to see them and asked Uncle Chen to go out and send them away.
Lu Fengqing didn't go out; instead, she nestled on the small sofa, holding her phone, and chatted with Huo Huaisui.
[SuiSui: Thanks to those gossipy old women in the sisters' group, I only just found out that Tang Xingzhou and your sister were actually together eight hundred years ago!]
[SuiSui: I didn't see them mention it in the group before the incident, it must have been intentional.]
[SuiSui: You're not blind, so why did you pick a fiancé from the trash can?]
Lu Fengqing replied with a string of ellipses.
Her marriage to Tang Xingzhou was actually proposed to her maternal grandfather by Mr. Tang. She only found out that Tang Xingzhou and Lu Yuhan had been together after the engagement.
If she had known earlier, she would never have agreed to the engagement.
Uncle Chen returned quickly. "Madam Tang has gone back, but Young Master Zhou is still standing outside."
Grandpa Lu said calmly, "Let him be."
Lu Fengqing put down her phone, picked an apple from the fruit basket, peeled and cut it into pieces. She tasted a small piece herself first before feeding it to Grandpa Lu. "It's quite sweet, Grandpa, have a taste."
"Grandpa is old and can't eat things that are too sweet." Even though he said that, Grandpa Lu still ate the apple that his granddaughter fed him.
After dinner, Lu Fengqing was tidying up the small dining table when Uncle Chen suddenly walked up to Old Master Lu and whispered a few words in his ear.
Grandpa Lu looked at his granddaughter, "Your second uncle and aunt have brought Yuhan over."
Lu Fengqing kept her head down and didn't say anything.
Grandpa Lu sighed, "If Niannian doesn't want to see them, she should go back first. Grandpa is fine, and there are doctors and nurses here looking after him."
Lu Fengqing really didn't want to see them.
She didn't tell Lu Yuhan what she had done, not out of consideration for their sisterly bond, but because she was afraid that her grandfather would be sad and angry if he found out.
Her maternal grandfather doted on her. He was so angry about Lu Yuhan and Tang Xingzhou's affair that he was hospitalized. If he found out what Lu Yuhan had done... she didn't dare to think about it.
The doctor said that my grandfather can't be subjected to any more stress.
But she is not a saint, nor is she good-tempered.
She escaped this time not because Lu Yuhan was merciful, but because she was lucky.
Lu Yuhan wanted to ruin her reputation, so she didn't mind letting her experience that feeling.
-
The old Gu family house was brightly lit, and the dining room was full of people.
Gu Jinhong was a prominent figure in City A in his youth. Even now, nearing eighty, he still holds considerable power within the Gu family business, making him the undisputed head of the entire Gu Group. He has three sons and one daughter. His eldest son and daughter were born to his mother, while his two younger sons were illegitimate children conceived through an affair when he was younger.
Apart from the eldest son, Gu Zhenjun, who became a vegetable due to a car accident in his early years, and the eldest daughter, Gu Zhenying, who married into the Xie family in the north of the city, the rest of the Gu family returned to the Gu residence today.
Gu Suixing was the last to arrive. After entering, she went straight to the empty seat next to her mother, Huo Yao, and sat down.
Gu Jinhong frowned. "Why didn't you call anyone?"
Gu Suixing called out, "Grandpa."
Gu Jinhong was so angry at that arrogant attitude that it made his liver hurt, but he couldn't bring himself to scold him.
Huo Yao made no attempt to smooth things over, her expression indifferent, as if everything here had nothing to do with her.
During the stalemate, Gu Suixing's third aunt smiled and said, "It's already this late, Suixing must be hungry too, let the child eat first."
Gu Jinhong glanced at her, then took the opportunity to back down, saying, "Alright. Let's eat."
Seeing this, Madam Gu rolled her eyes inwardly.
After the meal, Gu Suixing accompanied Gu Jinhong for a walk to aid digestion.
Gu Jinhong looked deeply into his favorite and most outstanding grandson and spoke up, "You've been back for quite a few days now. Go to work at the company after you've rested enough. Grandpa has already approved the board meeting, so just go."
Gu Suixing has been back for almost a week, and this ancestor doesn't mention work at all. He spends his days eating, drinking, and having fun, acting like a spoiled brat who just wants to live a life of leisure.
Hearing Gu Jinhong's words, Gu Suixing didn't react much, and said with a faint smile, "I'll follow your arrangements."
Gu Jinhong nodded in satisfaction.
After the grandfather and grandson returned from their walk, Huo Yao called Gu Suixing into the study and tossed him a photograph.
The photo was taken when he carried Lu Fengqing into the clinic that morning.
Gu Suixing smiled and said, "Which private investigator is this? Their photography skills need improvement."
"I don't have the time to have someone follow you," Huo Yao said calmly. "Your third aunt saw it and took the picture."
Gu Suixing: "Is she very free?"
Huo Yao was too lazy to argue with him and asked directly, "Did you not break up or are you back together?"
Gu Suixing shrugged. "Neither."
"Whether it is or not, you know in your heart." Huo Yao said calmly, "I mean what I say. I don't care about your affairs, but if you still want what your grandfather has and want to see your father, then don't upset your grandfather."
In the early years, Gu Jinhong and the Lu family had many conflicts due to their differing views. The only mediator between the two families, Gu Zhenjun, who was also Gu Suixing's father, was involved in an accident and became a vegetable. The two families have basically been estranged for years. Gu Jinhong could not possibly let his precious grandson marry a daughter of the Lu family.
Back then, Gu Jinhong hurriedly sent his grandson abroad for two reasons: first, to maintain control of the Gu family business, and second, to break up the young couple.
If you really push this old man too far, he's capable of anything.
Gu Suixing smiled casually, "Grandpa loves me so much, I can't afford to upset him, can I?"
Knowing her own son well, Huo Yao ignored him, saying, "Before you came back, your grandfather mentioned your marriage to me a few times. He seemed to want you to get married soon and give him a great-grandson. You've been free these past few days anyway, so I've arranged a meeting for you with Miss Zhang. I'll send you the time and place later."
"Okay. I'll do as you say." Gu Suixing seemed very agreeable.
Huo Yao walked behind the desk and sat down. "When you leave, close the door behind you."
This means they're being asked to leave.
Gu Suixing asked, "You only made an appointment with Miss Zhang?"
Huo Yao coldly raised her head, "Or should I invite all the socialites in the city at once to choose a concubine for you?"
Gu Suixing nodded shamelessly, though her tone was somewhat reluctant: "Okay."
Huo Yao gestured for him to get lost with her eyes.
Gu Suixing closed the door, took out his phone, and pressed the answer button.
A smiling male voice came through the receiver: "Xingbao, come out for dinner, it's a welcome dinner for you."
Gu Suixing narrowed his eyes slightly.
Huo Huai'an: "What, others can call me by this nickname but I can't?"
The word "others" was emphasized particularly heavily.
Gu Suixing: "Hang up."
"No, no, no," Huo Huai'an quickly said.
He'd already booked the place and invited a lot of people, so the protagonist couldn't just back out.
Fearing that this ancestor wouldn't come out, Huo Huai'an changed his words: "Sui Xing, come out for dinner, we'll treat you to a meal."
Gu Suixing: "I'm not going."
Huo Huai'an continued, "I called Tang Xingzhou."
Gu Suixing: "Not interested."
Huo Huai'an gave a wry smile.
Alright, I know you're only interested in that young lady, my ancestor.
He wanted to shout, but that young lady was only interested in attending various banquets and didn't like coming to such a dark place that didn't show off her beauty at all. Otherwise, he wouldn't have bothered to call out to that unlucky Tang Xingzhou.
