Chapter 3 It in the Rainy Night
“Dongdong——”
As expected, there was a knock on the door in the quiet little room.
Yin Xiu turned sideways and wrapped himself in the quilt, ignoring everything and continuing to sleep.
The new player would be accepted by the others soon anyway, so he didn't need a roommate.
“Dongdongdong——”
The knock on the door sounded again, softly and rhythmically, very steady. It was obvious that the person outside had no intention of leaving.
Yin Xiu turned over and tried to close his eyes and sleep, but for some reason the voices and rain outside the window were far less noticeable than the figure outside the door.
The man didn't even say anything, he just knocked on the door, but his gaze seemed to penetrate the door and fall directly on Yin Xiu.
He could feel that the man was standing at the door, looking at him openly, without any obstruction.
"Can you open the door?"
After a long silence, he finally spoke. It was a deep male voice with a gentle tone that sounded non-threatening.
"Go to someone else's place, I don't need a roommate." Yin Xiu raised his voice in response. It was common for newcomers who had not yet come into contact with the old players in the town to come here by accident.
The man outside the door chuckled softly, "The others asked me to come to you."
Yin Xiu looked up. This was the first time a newcomer was driven to his place by other people in the town. It was very novel.
"What did you do that they disliked?"
"I went down to the lake and caught a fish to eat."
Yin Xiu immediately got out of bed, hurried to the door, and opened it.
The night wind blew raindrops and moisture into the dark room.
Standing outside the door was a drenched man, his black suit completely soaked, his hair dripping with water. His face was pale, but he was smiling, looking handsome, gentle, and very elegant.
I don’t know if it’s because the curve of his smile is too perfect or because it’s so out of place in the night, but there’s a hint of eerieness about the man.
"Are there really fish in the lake?" This was the first thing Yin Xiu asked when he opened the door.
"have."
The man nodded, and the moment he opened his mouth, Yin Xiu caught a glimpse of his teeth. Compared to normal human teeth, his looked a little pointy, and there was some unknown red liquid remaining between his teeth.
"Are there really fish in the lake? I've been fishing for six years and haven't caught any." Yin Xiu rubbed his chin in thought, glancing at the man out of the corner of his eye.
It was raining outside, so it was normal to get wet, but this man was completely soaked, as if he had been standing in the rain for several hours, and the feeling of dampness was very strong.
"The fish tastes good." The man pursed his lips and chuckled, "It just sounds a little sharp."
"It turns out that the fish in the lake can make sounds..." Yin Xiu began to suspect that what he was eating might not be fish, but something else.
But he didn't ask any further questions. He just took a step back, revealing the low threshold between them, and raised his chin slightly indifferently, "It's cold outside, come in and talk first."
The man lowered his eyes and stared at the threshold on the ground without moving.
Town Rule Five: When it rains, new faces will appear in the town. Those who can enter the house are newcomers, and those who cannot enter the house must be careful.
The man's silence prompted Yin Xiu to probe further, "Aren't you going to come in?"
He raised his head, the curve of his lips even wider, "Can I come in?"
"Can."
Yin Xiu nodded, and the man slowly stepped over the threshold and entered Yin Xiu's home.
The moment he came in, the room became a little colder, as if it was instantly filled with chill, and even Yin Xiu couldn't help shivering.
"It looks like you live alone." The man looked around the room and turned to look at Yin Xiu, who was in a daze, his eyes narrowed slightly. "They said I could choose a roommate in town. Can I live with you?"
Yin Xiu's gaze paused on the threshold for a few seconds, then he retracted it and closed the door.
"I don't want a roommate, but there are no extra rooms in town. If no one else wants you, you'll have to stay with me." He dug out a rule sheet from the drawer and handed it to the man. "Have others shown you the town's rule sheet?"
The man shook his head.
"Then take a look. If you remember it, you can live longer." Yin Xiu didn't have much interest in taking care of this sudden new roommate. After handing him the rule sheet, he turned around and lifted the curtain to look outside.
Although the only rule of the town is that no conscious being can be harmed, players who have been here for a long time actually know that this damage can be active or passive.
If he indirectly causes a man with no shelter to die outside tonight because of refusing to allow new people into the house, he will be breaking the rules.
The other players obviously did not reject him directly, but asked him to come to Yin Xiu. Even if this man died, it would not be a problem for them. Only Yin Xiu would be in trouble.
The man took the rule sheet, a hint of doubt flashed across his face, and after flipping through both sides for a few seconds, he put it aside and turned his gaze to Yin Xiu, his unchanging smile revealing his interest.
"You haven't asked my name yet."
"I don't want to know." Yin Xiu responded lazily, and after confirming that there was no trace of Empress Ye outside the door, he lowered the curtains.
Queen Ye has already been here tonight, so she shouldn’t come again, right?
He thought and turned back to the bed.
"Don't you want to know?" the man asked persistently, standing still.
"I don't want to." Yin Xiu turned off the light and returned to bed. Before going to sleep, he reminded her, "There are other rooms in the house. Find a place to sleep by yourself. Don't come to my bed."
There were indeed other empty rooms in the house, but Yin Xiu lived alone and always slept in the living room.
In his ideal, this man of unknown origin should have gone to another empty room to clean up and rest, and spend his first night safely, but after Yin Xiu turned off the lights, he did not move.
He just stood quietly in the darkness, staring at Yin Xiu on the bed without blinking. Apart from the strong sense of sight, he was almost silent.
"You really don't want to know my name?" After a few seconds of silence, his voice sounded again.
The only response he got was the silence in the room, Yin Xiu didn't react at all.
"Why did you sleep with a knife? Are you afraid of me?"
There was still no response from the house.
"Okay." The man chuckled with a hint of indifference. He turned and walked to the chair in the room and sat down. He didn't clean up the dampness on his body, nor did he go to sleep. He just sat quietly in the darkness and slowly said to Yin Xiu, "Good night."
The moment his light voice sounded, Yin Xiu, who should have been alert, became dazed for a moment. His eyelids gradually became heavy and began to droop uncontrollably until his eyes were completely closed.
The sound of rain in the town became blurred in his ears. Yin Xiu was half asleep and half awake. He could even hear the footsteps of the players outside walking hurriedly back to the house, but he could not break free from consciousness.
There are monsters in the town besides the Night Lady, but they cannot enter the house. They can only knock on each player's doors and windows at night, coax them out, and then kill them while chasing.
So what was sitting in his room staring at him now?
Are you new?
Obviously not.
Is it a ghost in the town?
It's unlikely, even the Night Queen can't appear when it rains, but he appeared and even entered the house.
Yin Xiu heard him get up from the chair, walked in the darkness to the bedside, and then squatted at the head of the bed.
Even if he couldn't see it, Yin Xiu could imagine the expression on his face at the moment. He must be smiling, a standard smile that was even a little weird, staring at Yin Xiu motionlessly in the darkness.
The long silence and the unignorable sight even made Yin Xiu feel a rare sense of fear.
The rain stopped at some point, and the players all returned to their rooms. The right to move in the night town returned to the hands of the monsters again.
The man beside the bed finally seemed unable to hold back and slowly reached out his hand to him.
Snap, Snap——
Suddenly, a familiar sound of footsteps was heard in the alley late at night. They crawled forward through puddles and slowly approached Yin Xiu's door.
The huge body moved to the door of Yin Xiu's house, and the sound of knocking on the window was heard again in the night.
That night, the Queen returned.
