Chapter 10: Bait
"Officer, I was just wondering," Wen Nianchu raised his head, a faint smile on his lips, "Is the air conditioner in your police station broken? This room is abnormally cold."
Gu Mingyue didn't respond to this. She opened the folder in front of her and said coldly:
"According to our investigation, that car was heading for you. The driver died on the spot after the collision by taking poison. This proves that before he arrived, he was ready to die."
It seems that Bai Yiqiu is determined to kill her?
A dark light flashed in Wen Nianchu's eyes, and then he returned to normal.
"This isn't an ordinary traffic accident; it's a carefully planned murder. But I just looked at the driver's background. He's an unemployed vagrant. He has no grudge against you. Why would he choose to attack you?"
Gu Mingyue's eyes were fixed on Wen Nianchu.
There was suspicion and curiosity in his eyes.
As she finished her words, she closed the folder in her hand.
Wen Nianchu on the other side didn't seem to be very nervous. She sat on the wooden chair, leaning back slightly, then stretched out her hands and said helplessly:
"I'll just say it's murder. But I'm the victim. It's not a good idea to hold me captive and interrogate me like this."
"You're so calm, Wen Nianchu." Gu Mingyue suddenly called her by her name, leaning forward slightly. "An eighteen-year-old girl was able to quickly predict a murder, call the Chinese police, and steer the car towards the Kuanjiang Bridge. And after just surviving a chase, she's now as relaxed as if she were chatting in a cafe."
“This isn’t normal.”
Gu Mingyue paused, her gaze fixed on Wen Nianchu:
"I just watched the surveillance footage from that moment. When you made that right-angle turn, you didn't turn halfway. Instead, you swerved right before reaching the guardrail. Your intention was to cause the car behind you to crash into you."
She opened the thermos cup beside her, took a sip of the water in the cup, and said lightly:
"Wen Nianchu, I reasonably suspect you know something?"
"Like, who's the driver?"
"Why did he carry drugs?"
"And you, are you involved in it?"
The last sentence was obviously Gu Mingyue's focus. She suspected that Wen Nianchu had a huge connection with the Rongcheng smuggling case they had recently received, so she was so aggressive during the conversation.
The atmosphere was a little tense.
After a long while, a light laugh came out of Wen Nianchu's throat, breaking the tense atmosphere.
"Ha ha."
"Officer Gu has been in the Gu family in Shangjing for too long and may not understand the rules of survival in Rongcheng."
"Here, revealing fear too early is tantamount to suicide."
Gu Mingyue's eyes narrowed slightly. This was the first time she showed any emotion other than indifference.
"You know who I am."
This is not a question.
When Wen Nianchu casually mentioned the words "Gu family in Shangjing", countless possibilities flashed through Gu Mingyue's mind - her identity in Rongcheng this time was kept absolutely secret. No one except the core members of the Gu family knew her identity this time.
But the eighteen-year-old girl in front of her accurately saw through her disguise.
Is there someone behind her?
Wen Nianchu smiled, and this time he really smiled.
The corners of her lips curled up slightly, but there was no warmth in her eyes, as if she had already seen through everything.
"Officer Gu came to Rongcheng to gain experience under a false name. How could I not know about such an exciting plot?"
The lights in the interrogation room were dim, originally intended to exert psychological pressure on the interrogated, but now, the dim light slanted across half of Wen Nianchu's face, outlining her delicate features. There was no trace of panic in her eyes, and even in her confrontation with Gu Mingyue, she always had the upper hand.
Wen Nianchu was very calm. She might know more than she initially thought, which might be the reason why the other party chose to silence her.
In just a few words of conversation, Gu Mingyue looked at Wen Nianchu, who was sitting opposite her, with a more complicated gaze.
Who is behind her?
The three major families in Beijing, the Gu family, the Pei family, and the Xie family, or some other forces that she didn't know about, hidden deep inside and ready to make a move.
Gu Mingyue stared at Wen Nianchu, trying to find flaws in those bottomless eyes.
But Wen Nianchu just tilted his head slightly, as if he saw through her thoughts, and said softly:
"Officer Gu, you're wondering...how much I know, right?"
The air suddenly stagnated.
A sharp light flashed in Gu Mingyue's eyes.
"Ms. Wen," Gu Mingyue looked at Wen Nianchu in front of her, "I hope we are not enemies."
Wen Nianchu: "I only stand on the side of justice. If you always uphold justice, we will never become enemies."
Wen Nianchu paused, then continued, "Officer Gu has just arrived in Rongcheng, so he must have heard of the underground casino here, Royal Dynasty. The son of the owner of Royal Dynasty has a grudge against me. Don't think so badly of me, I'm a good person. As for the driver who was sent here, you said he died of suicide by taking poison. Maybe he took the money and planned to die with me, right?"
"You mean, this driver is from the royal family." Gu Mingyue hesitated.
"Officer Gu, this is the information we just found."
The office door was suddenly pushed open and a young police officer rushed in panting, handing over a stack of documents.
Gu Mingyue flipped through the documents quickly, her brows furrowed tighter and tighter.
These are the internal information of the Royal Casino. It seems that just as Wen Nianchu said, the deceased driver was indeed a member of the Royal Casino.
This was the 345th year since the founding of China, and no relevant strategies to combat these forces had yet been introduced. However, according to a lot of information Gu Mingyue had received, the headquarters would soon introduce policies and relevant plans to target these phenomena and achieve precise strikes.
But at present, the driver who caused the accident has died of poisoning, and Gu Mingyue has no reason to touch this so-called underground city.
"Huangdai is Rongcheng's underground casino. There are many interests involved, and the documents from above have not been released yet."
"So, I know Officer Gu can't shut down this casino right now, but if I find evidence of their drug trafficking, I might be able to catch them all in one fell swoop."
Wen Nianchu sat on the chair, she tilted her head, a few strands of disobedient hair hung by her ears, making her porcelain-white face look even more childish.
She always has a sweet smile on her face, and the few strands of hair on her head sticking up make her look very playful and cute.
Gu Mingyue raised her eyes and met the girl's clear and bright eyes.
The innocence contained in it was almost overflowing, but it reminded her of the calm lake before the storm.
Gu Mingyue: "How did you find evidence of their drug trafficking?"
"It's very simple." Wen Nianchu blinked, his tone as relaxed as if he was discussing where to go for the weekend. "I have nothing to do during the summer vacation, so I can be bait for you."
