Chapter 34 Heartbeat

Chapter 34 Heartbeat

The rain fell diagonally, and the whole city was shrouded in misty water vapor.

Wen Nianchu leaned against the back seat of the car, playing with her newly acquired limited-time buff. As soon as she summoned the system interface, she saw a red dot on top of her unfolded floor plan. It was probably not far in front of the car.

She clicked it curiously and heard a meowing sound, but no human voice.

So she tilted her head slightly and saw the figure on the side of the road through the rain-stained car window.

It’s Xie Yue.

He squatted in the rain, tilting his umbrella over the stray cats. Rain trickled down his shirt, soaking a large patch of his back, but he seemed oblivious, his head bent, his eyes focused on tearing open the bag of cat food. At his feet, several skinny cats cautiously circled his trouser legs, their fur dripping wet, rubbing against his pants.

I didn’t expect Xie Yue to be so kind.

Wen Nianchu looked quietly for two seconds, his eyes following the raindrops sliding down his chin.

She suddenly said, "Uncle Chen, is there an umbrella in the car?"

*

When Xie Yue heard the footsteps, the rain was pouring down.

He looked up and saw a black umbrella breaking through the rain curtain. The umbrella was slightly lifted, revealing a bright face.

Wen Nianchu stood in front of him, with the brim of her umbrella tilted to block the pouring rain for him.

She handed over a folding umbrella with her other hand, her lips slightly raised, and her tone was lazy:

"How was it? Are you touched?"

Xie Yue was stunned for a moment, then silently looked at the umbrella in her hand: "Thank you."

The sound of rain was getting heavier. When Xie Yue took the umbrella, his calloused fingers accidentally brushed against her wrist.

The other person's wet fingers gave her a strange feeling. The touch was very special, with the coolness after being soaked by rain, but a bit of warmth came out from his rough fingertips.

Wen Nianchu withdrew his hand, but the fleeting warmth seemed to be branded on his skin.

She took a half step back as if nothing had happened, and the umbrella covered her figure again.

"Have you finished feeding the cats?" She raised her chin towards the group of stray cats that were busy eating.

She and Xie Yue had established a revolutionary comradeship, and Wen Nianchu reluctantly felt that he was a good person.

Plus, the system wants her to humiliate him.

She is trying to improve her favorability as a precaution.

Xie Yue stood up, and water droplets dripped down the corners of his clothes.

He didn't rush to open the umbrella, but stared at her for two seconds, with the corners of his lips slightly raised:

"Miss Wen turns out to be such a warm-hearted person."

"It's just a whim." Wen Nianchu snorted lightly, "You can use the umbrella if you want. But don't fall in love with me just because I gave you an umbrella."

She turned to leave, but heard rustling sounds behind her.

Xie Yue finally opened his umbrella, the black umbrella opening in the rain. He held the umbrella high, overlapping a small part with Wen Nianchu's umbrella, just blocking a string of raindrops that were about to fall on her shoulders.

"It's a matter of reciprocity." His voice was mixed with the rain, but it made Wen Nianchu feel that he was inexplicably gentler.

Wen Nianchu glanced sideways and saw him standing half a step away, with his umbrella slightly tilted towards her.

He had just shielded her shoulders from the rain and took a step forward.

At this moment, the rain was sliding down his shoulders, but he looked unconcerned.

"...idiot." She muttered softly.

No one spoke anymore, but a subtle atmosphere quietly grew in the sound of rain.

Wen Nianchu felt weird.

So, Wen Nianchu was the first to break the silence: "Hey, I'm leaving, I have something else to do."

Xie Yue nodded, holding the umbrella in his hand but showing no intention of leaving immediately.

The rain slid down his eyelashes, and his calm eyes were particularly focused at this moment.

"From now on," he suddenly said, "just call me by my name every time."

Wen Nianchu raised an eyebrow: "What?"

Didn't she just not call his name much today?

This is also very fussy... old-fashioned...

Xie Yue silently brushed away a drop of water from her hair with his fingers: "Because of this..."

His voice was so soft that it was almost drowned by the sound of the rain, but it rang clearly in her ears:

"I can only be sure that you are really calling me."

Wen Nianchu's breathing stopped.

Before she could react, Xie Yue had already taken two steps back, and the umbrella again covered his expression: "I'll return the umbrella to you next time, Miss Wen."

After saying that, he turned and walked into the rain, his back soon blurred by the rain and fog.

Only the touch left at the ends of her hair reminded Wen Nianchu that everything that had just happened was not an illusion.

She stood there until Uncle Chen honked his horn and then she came to her senses.

"Miss?"

Uncle Chen's voice came from far away. Wen Nianchu blinked and found that his fingers were unconsciously twisting around the strand of hair that had been touched.

"Do you want to catch up?"

Uncle Chen didn't see this scene. He was on the phone just now. He just felt that Wen Nianchu had not gotten in the car for a long time, so he rolled down the window and asked.

She shook her head, her fingers loosening the hair and placing it around her waist.

Wen Nianchu lowered her eyelashes and shook her head gently: "No need."

Tsk.

She was sure that Xie Yue had a crush on her!

She opened the car door, but the moment she got in, she couldn't help but look in the direction Xie Yue left.

"Miss, is that the friend you made in school?" Uncle Chen asked curiously.

"I guess so." Wen Nianchu said with his head down.

The only few good friends she had in her previous life all died before her. She hoped that Xie Yue would not die before her because she rewrote the plot.

But come to think of it, why does his back look so familiar? I feel like I've seen him somewhere before.

*

Wen Nianchu came to the mall, walked to the second floor, and actually saw a strange shop.

This shop is located in the corner.

The clerk was a boy with golden curly hair, who looked quite delicate.

"Hello, I'm here to pick up a package."

Before Wen Nianchu said her name and the number she left in the system, the clerk directly brought out a courier box.

The other party handed her a sticky note with a cartoon pattern printed on it and asked her to sign it:

"Please sign this as the recipient."

Wen Nianchu didn't start writing, and asked suspiciously, "You won't use my name to do something improper, right?"

Even though it was a product of the system, she still maintained the necessary vigilance.

The boy laughed:

"Miss, we are a regular courier station. We are only responsible for delivery, not fraud." He thought for a moment and added, "But you really can't sign for this thing carelessly. If someone takes it away, it will be troublesome."

Wen Nianchu hesitated for a moment, but still signed.

As she wrote, she tentatively asked, "Are you also a system?"

"I'm not a system, I'm a plane express delivery station. My premium stores are spread across countless planes, specializing in providing the express delivery that system users like you deserve."

"Then...are there other system users in this world?" Wen Nianchu remembered the system's previous avoidance of the question and couldn't help but ask.

The boy's smile remained unchanged, but he shook his head bluntly: "Sorry, I can't tell you this."

He knocked on the delivery box and said, "Let's check the goods first."

Wen Nianchu unpacked the package, revealing a white gift box. He opened the lid, revealing two electronic watches lying quietly on the velvet lining.

One is black and the other is white, with a simple design. At first glance, they look no different from ordinary smart watches.

"What is this?" She frowned. "The system said it's something to keep me safe."

"It's the 'Heartbeat Artifact,'" the boy explained with a smile, "Once you put it on, you can't take it off."

Wen Nianchu: “?”

Why does she want such useless things?
