Chapter Thirty-Seven: Why Don't You Want to Call Me Mother

Faced with Zhu's apology, Zhou Lan was not one to hold grudges. She shook her head slightly and said, "It's nothing."

Ning Huan raised an eyebrow at Zhu's actions and asked, "Sister-in-law Zhu, what did you mean by what you just said?"

Zhu looked at her and said, "What else could it mean? Since you've come to apologize sincerely, I'm not one to hold a grudge."

Then he pointed to Xiao Taozi in the house and said, "The main thing is that when my Xiao Taozi came back last time, she changed a lot. Originally, her father and I were worried every day that she was becoming more and more like me and that she was developing a shrewish personality at such a young age. What should we do?"

"Then one day she came back and became much more well-behaved. The whole child started to change. Your brother Zhu and I were overjoyed. We have to thank you for this, sister."

Hearing Zhu's words, Ning Huan smiled with relief and said, "Sister-in-law, there's no need to thank me. This child is what we worry about most every day, just like my four little ones. The main thing is that Xiao Taozi can listen to advice; otherwise, no matter how much we talk to her, it's all for nothing if she doesn't listen."

Zhu nodded: "Sister, you're right. Ever since my little dumpling changed, my opinion of you has changed a lot. I've also regretted it a bit; I was wrong to argue with you last time."

The feud between Ning Huan and Zhu Shi was thus resolved.

When Zhu heard that Ning Huan's purpose in coming was to find a doctor for Zhou Jing'an in town, she learned that the oxcart was still resting.

She smiled and waved her hand, saying, "Sister, you don't need to say anything. The oxcart has rested well, and it was supposed to be able to take everyone to town as usual tomorrow."

So Ning Huan and Zhu agreed on a time: Ning Huan would come to Zhu's house early the next morning to take a car to town.

On the way back, Zhou Lan said to Ning Huan about how she had pulled her away earlier, "Third sister-in-law, if Zhu Shi was really still arguing, how could you have pulled me away like that?"

Ning Huan said, "Zhu spoke rudely to you, elder sister. How could I not pull you away? You originally wanted to bring me along to mediate, but since she won't show any mercy, fine, fine. Why did she have to ridicule you like that..."

Hearing Ning Huan's indignation on her behalf, Zhou Lan felt a surge of emotion: "Third sister-in-law, you seem to have changed a bit."

Ning Huan, who had been chattering on and on, suddenly stopped talking.

Zhou Lan said, "You never cared about these things before. It's true that the separation of the family has made my third sister-in-law much more mature. She knows how to care for her husband, teach the children, and even care about others."

Ning Huan smiled awkwardly. She had just thought that Zhou Lan had discovered that she was not the original owner of this body.

He then echoed, "Yes. After the family split up, I had to do everything myself, and I gradually realized that I was not a good person before. Now I am gradually correcting myself."

Zhou Lan nodded and said, "Jing An taught me a saying before, something about admitting your mistakes and correcting them, and about being kind."

She was recalling what she was saying as she spoke.

Ning Huan paused for a moment, then smiled and said, "Big sister, it is a great virtue to admit one's mistakes and correct them."

Zhou Lan nodded repeatedly: "Yes, yes, that's it. Third sister-in-law, look how clearly you remember what Jing'an told you."

She continued, "Third sister-in-law, don't think I'm being long-winded. I just hope that you and Jing'an can live a good life together. Although Jing'an was unwilling to marry you back then, you two have been married for so long now and have four little ones. Living a good life together is better than anything else."

Before Ning Huan could speak, Zhou Lan continued, "Jing An, you see him as cold and aloof, and he doesn't say anything. But he cares a lot in his heart."

“Before you two got married, I would sometimes bring him meals to the school. I saw many young masters and noblemen in the academy ridiculing him, but he never said anything and just studied hard. When the course ended, he always got the best grades, and sometimes he would give me some money to help with household expenses.”

"Actually, Jing'an has had a tough time. Just because he says he doesn't eat candy doesn't mean he doesn't like it. I'm saying this so you can understand Jing'an a little better. These two people should be more accommodating to each other when they're living together."

Ning Huan nodded slightly, finally understanding Zhou Lan's meaning.

She said those things today simply to encourage her to live a good life with Zhou Jing'an.

What Zhou Lan didn't know was that she had already agreed with Zhou Jing'an that they would divorce once she helped him recover.

After returning home, Ning Huan told Zhou Jing'an that they could go to town to fetch a doctor the next day.

The four little ones clapped their hands excitedly: "Great! Daddy can have a doctor come to treat him tomorrow!"

After giving Ning Huan a few more instructions, Zhou Lan was about to leave, but Ning Huan originally wanted her to stay for dinner.

To everyone's surprise, Zhou Lan waved her hand and said, "No, I'll go home and eat with my grandma. I'll go to town with you tomorrow."

Ning Huan had no choice but to nod and take the venison and braised meat from earlier in the day back with her.

During the meal, the four little ones also really enjoyed the braised meat, and even Zhou Jing'an couldn't resist picking up a few more pieces.

The little ones couldn't help but exclaim, "This meat smells so good!"

"The taste seems different from anything I've had before!"

Ning Huan nodded: "This is braised meat. After I marinated it with braising spices, this is how it tastes."

The three little ones nodded.

That evening, Ning Huan recounted the things she needed to take to town the next day. Besides finding a doctor for Zhou Jing'an, she also needed to buy some rice, flour, and cooking oil for the family.

The clothes for the little ones, as well as the clothes for myself and Zhou Jing'an, were all old and worn out. Not to mention other things in the house, the four little ones' broken bed still hadn't been repaired, and we needed to spend some money to fix it.

So after preparing some rare herbs in her consciousness space, she also planned to sell the deer antlers and tendons she had caught to a restaurant the next day.

After she finished tidying up, she returned to the room and found Xiao Sibao sitting alone on the edge of the bed.

She lowered her head, looking somewhat dejected.

Ning Huan was a little puzzled. She stepped forward and asked, "Little Sibao, why are you here all alone?"

The little boy said with some grievance, "They don't play with me, and they often leave me alone..."

Ning Huan was taken aback for a moment, then said, "Is it because you called me 'mother'?"

Xiao Sibao nodded: "We all agreed before that we would never call you Mom. Now that I haven't kept my promise, it's understandable that they're ignoring me."

Ning Huan asked in confusion, "Then why don't you want to call me 'Mother'?"

"Because you said before that if we called you 'mother,' you would beat us to death!"

Suddenly, Da Bao's voice came from the doorway. Ning Huan turned around and saw the three little ones standing at the door.
