Chapter Fifty-Eight: Selling the Meat

Hearing Zhou Yan's words, Zhou Dasheng chimed in, "Your second sister is right. Then we'll leave the medicinal herbs for you, and the rest can be left for Mother, Second Sister, and Sister-in-law."

Just as Zhou Yan was about to rush forward again, Ning Huan shook her head: "It still won't work."

Even Madam Liu couldn't hold back any longer: "Third sister-in-law, what's wrong this time?"

Ning Huan said, "I have to save the remaining fabric to make clothes for my husband. His classmate said he would come to see him again next time. If he sees that his clothes are still as shabby as they are today, then it is my fault as his wife."

That wasn't wrong. Zhou Dasheng himself didn't lack any clothes or fabric, so he nodded and replied, "Then I'll leave you the clothes and fabric too."

Hearing this, Zhou Yan couldn't help but feel indignant: "You're lying! There's so much fabric in here, my third brother couldn't even wear it all in a year!"

With so much beautiful fabric, how much of it could Zhou Jing'an possibly use?

Besides, some of the fabrics here are clearly women's styles. Where would Zhou Jing'an possibly use them? It must be that bitch Ning Huan's doing this on purpose!

Zhou's mother chimed in, "Besides, the third son won't need those hairpins and jewelry, will he? You have to take care of four children all the time, and you don't have much time to take care of yourself. Why don't you just let your mother take them all!"

Zhou Dasheng listened to these things, but he didn't really care. When he first came in, he was looking around the yard to see if there were any wild deer.

This is the most important thing for him, as the eldest brother, to come here today.

Meat is ridiculously expensive these days, and we can only afford to eat it once every few months. Yet Ning Huan, this woman, hunted a whole head of venison but didn't bring it home.

He didn't care about what Zhou's mother and the others had just said about the things in the box; they were just women's things, and he could just take a few things home when he left.

After looking around for a while without finding anything, Zhou Dasheng, who had little patience, asked directly, "Third brother's wife, I heard you recently hunted a wild deer?"

Hearing this, Ning Huan sneered. She knew that Zhou Dasheng's visit today was not just to support Zhou's mother and Zhou Yan.

It turns out they heard that their family had some good stuff and came over hoping to get it for free.

"Brother's information network is quite good. I did indeed hunt a wild deer on the mountain a few days ago."

Upon hearing this, Zhou Yan's eyes widened, but she assumed it was just gossip circulating among the villagers.

After all, hunting is a man's job, and Ning Huan is a woman, so how could she do it?

Upon hearing Ning Huan's admission, the image of succulent venison instantly flashed into her mind, as if the aroma of venison had already reached her nose.

"Well, you've hunted venison and you didn't even think to bring some home! You ungrateful wretch, you've been eating all the Zhou family's food for nothing!"

Zhou Yan cursed fiercely, "Hurry up and take the meat out!"

Ning Huan shook her head: "I sold all the venison, and used the money to hire a doctor and get medicine for my husband."

As soon as she finished speaking, Zhou's mother collapsed to the ground. She had thought she could take some meat home, but Ning Huan hadn't left her a single piece; she had sold it all.

She sat on the ground and cursed, "You bitch! My son married you and got nothing in return. Now I, as his mother, can't even get a piece of meat. It's all because of you!"

Before Ning Huan could speak, Yang, who was watching the commotion from the wall, burst out laughing: "I thought your Zhou family was such a conscientious family. Your third son is sick, and you, as his mother, don't care about him at all. Your brothers and sisters haven't even asked how their brother's injury is."

"On the contrary, they started eyeing other people's things as soon as they entered the door, and they even coveted the meat that other people used to treat illnesses, tsk tsk tsk..."

These words made the villagers who were watching the commotion at the door realize something: "What Yang said is right. Zhou Dasheng didn't even enter Jing'an's house when he came over. He started thinking about the things in the box and the meat as soon as he arrived."

"His wife sold the meat a long time ago and went to find a doctor for Jing'an. Didn't she come by carriage a few days ago?"

"They've arrived. They've treated Jing'an and gotten a lot of medicine. I was wondering where Jing'an's wife got the money; turns out she sold her meat to earn it."

"Although Ning Huan didn't do well before, I feel that she has changed a lot now."

“That’s right. Not to mention finding a doctor for Jing’an, look at his little ones, they’ve become much cleaner and more well-behaved.”

“Jing’an’s wife has been handling all these things by herself; it seems like the Zhou family hasn’t been involved much.”

Hearing these words, Zhou's mother lost face and pointed at Yang, scolding, "This is a matter for our Zhou family, and it's none of your business to interfere!"

Yang was not one to be trifled with. She stood with her hands on her hips and snapped, "Pah! I, an outsider, can't even stand by and watch your own family affairs, and you have the nerve to say that?"

"I should call you 'Auntie,' but I just can't bring myself to do it. You're as hard-hearted as a rock! Your own child is sick, and you, as the mother, are worried, but you're still thinking about the things in the child's house. It's disgusting!"

Zhou Yan chimed in, "Who do you think you are? What do you mean by 'coveting'? My mother gave birth to all of us siblings, and everything we own belongs to our parents. What can't she have if she wants it?"

"Or are you saying that after your child gets married, he or she will abandon his or her parents and do nothing at all?"

These were harsh words. Yang was furious and glared at Zhou Yan before falling silent.

Ning Huan said from the side, "Second sister, what you said is not right. My husband and I did not abandon our parents. We have everything our parents need. But my husband is seriously ill, and we really have no money to give them."

"I finally managed to hunt a wild deer and sell it to get some money to treat my husband's illness. How can you say I'm not being filial to my parents?"

These words immediately jolted the onlookers awake; they had just thought Zhou Yan was right.

“What Jing’an’s wife said is right. It’s not easy to earn some money to treat Jing’an’s illness. Zhou has given birth to so many children, so why is she so fixated on Jing’an?”

"Isn't it because the third child is the only one who's turned out to be successful among these kids?"

"Forget it, if we really cherished the third brother so much, why was Jing'an kicked out as soon as he got injured?"

The reason why the Zhou family separated from Zhou Jing'an was well known not only to the Zhou family members but also to everyone in the village.

It's just because her son failed his exam and was seriously injured, and it seems he won't live much longer.

He's a useless person; keeping him around would only be a burden. We were worried about the high medical expenses he'd need for treatment, so we separated him from the family.

Zhou's mother and Zhou Yan were both women, so they didn't think much of the insults. But Zhou Dasheng was a man, and he became increasingly embarrassed as he listened to the villagers' comments.
