Chapter 278: Two Men
“If you leave with Bai Qiu without saying a word, you will still be the head maid of Hehuan Palace.”
Chu Wan paused, then reached out and placed the hairpin in Bai Qiu's hand: "Throw it away, I don't want it anymore."
Xiaoya was momentarily stunned.
What's the meaning?
"What a pity, you still disappointed me."
Chu Wan covered her face and chuckled softly, "Bai Qiu, take her away and cover her mouth."
"Don't shout or yell, lest you disturb the people in the other palaces."
"Yes, Bai Qiu understands."
Bai Qiu agreed and then ordered two rough servants to take Xiao Ya, who was still looking bewildered, away.
As Chu Wan expected, Xiao Ya started yelling as soon as she stepped out the door. Fortunately, a palace maid quickly stuffed a white cloth into her mouth, which stopped her from making a sound.
"Am I being too heartless?"
Bai Qiu didn't speak, but simply shook her head gently.
Why remain silent?
"After more than ten years of master-servant relationship, Sister Xiaoya understands Your Majesty's thoughts best, and Your Majesty also understands Sister Xiaoya's character. It seems that Your Majesty has done her best as a mistress."
As for being ruthless, this is the inner palace; if the Empress wants to last, some things are understandable.
Bai Qiu, trying to guess her thoughts, replied.
"You are quite clever."
Her few words coincided with her own thoughts, and Chu Wan couldn't help but glance at her a few more times.
"What about her there..."
Chu Wan knew she was referring to Xiao Ya, so she didn't rush to answer. She quietly fiddled with her earrings for a while before raising her head again: "Never mind, you don't need to worry about this. I have my own plans."
"Then this servant will go and deal with this hairpin."
"Okay, by the way, how is Rong'er doing these days?"
Bai Qiu paused, somewhat hesitantly, "The Eighth Prince originally forbade me from saying these words..."
"What? I am his mother. Is there anything I cannot know?"
Chu Wan sat back down at the table and slowly sipped her hot tea.
"The Eighth Prince hasn't been to the Southern Study for several days."
"What?!"
Chu Wan slammed the teacup down so hard it nearly shattered the porcelain base.
If you were to ask what Chu Wan cared about most, it would be either the emperor's favor or the Eighth Prince; in the end, it was just two men.
"Is he going to rebel?"
She slammed her hand on the table in anger, the gold hairpin in her hair swaying wildly. "Did Grand Tutor Shen say anything? Does His Majesty know? What is he doing instead of studying? What kind of landscape paintings is he painting again?"
A barrage of questions came at Chu Wan, demonstrating how much she valued Yu Yuanrong.
Bai Qiu had no choice but to answer one by one: "Grand Tutor Shen reported this matter to His Majesty the day before yesterday. His Majesty didn't say anything, only that His Highness could do whatever he wanted. His Highness was very happy to hear that."
"Foolish! He...he!"
Chu Wan was so angry she couldn't speak. She could only sit back down and sulk, clutching her handkerchief. "I am his mother. Everyone else knows he skipped school, but I'm the last one to find out!"
"His Highness knew you would resent him, which is why he asked us to keep quiet."
"Whom am I pressing his head down for? Is it so that I know more, that I'm more learned? How foolish!"
His Majesty is also biased. The Crown Prince and Prince Mu both received assignments, but he deliberately doesn't give Rong'er a chance to hone her skills.
After muttering to herself for a long time until her head started to ache, Chu Wan finally had to stop and rub her temples, her head aching.
"Your Highness loves your son dearly, and His Highness will surely be grateful to you when he grows up."
"What's the use of just loving him? Right now, people are avoiding him like the plague, afraid that I will harm him."
