Chapter 288: Something Else Is Going On
After a brief whisper, Zhong Heng understood and stepped back, then turned and entered the gambling den with his sword.
The two split up, with Yu Shiyan searching through restaurants one by one.
With so many people locked up in the courtyard, providing them with three meals a day is a thorny issue; only a restaurant of a certain size can provide it daily.
Once you figure this out, the search becomes much easier.
After ruling out two nearby restaurants, Yu Shiyan glanced at the last restaurant within a five-mile radius and vaguely felt that he should be able to find the answer here.
"What would you like to eat, sir?"
As soon as he entered, the waiter came over with a rag: "We have home-style dishes, river delicacies, and even the medicinal cuisine that's popular in the capital. We have everything you could want. We can make whatever you want to eat."
"I'm here to pick up the groceries."
"Carry the dishes?"
The waiter looked him up and down and immediately understood: "I see, you're from the gambling den, right?"
"You look a bit unfamiliar, I didn't recognize you at first. Come with me."
Yu Shiyan nodded and followed him around the lobby into the kitchen.
"Old Li, the groceries deliveryman is here!"
The elderly cook poked his head out of the thick smoke: "Didn't we say first thing this morning that we wouldn't need it starting today?"
"Due to special circumstances, this is the last time today. I'll trouble you to cook."
The man put down his long spoon and came out, wiping his hands on his apron several times, looking somewhat embarrassed: "I'm fine, but it's getting late, and I'm afraid we won't be able to finish making so many portions."
"Do as much as you can."
"Do we still need to make the portion that's delivered separately?"
Yu Shiyan unconsciously clenched his fist, but his face remained calm and composed: "Yes, make that one and send it over as soon as possible."
"Okay, understood."
Without hesitation, the cook agreed and quickly packed the food into a box, handing it to the waiter: "Same place, go ahead."
“I’ll go with you, and we’ll settle the accounts when we get back.”
"Okay, let's go then."
Xiao Er didn't mind; it wouldn't hurt to have someone to talk to on the road.
How far is that place?
"It's about five or six miles away. You're from the gambling den, don't you know?"
"I haven't been here long, it's not my turn yet, this is my first time here."
"No wonder, but who exactly is that old woman? She looks rather strange."
"Strange?"
Yu Shiyan keenly sensed that something was amiss.
The waiter hesitated, then said, "That's true, you've never been there. Never mind, I won't say anything more. You'll see for yourself in a bit."
Yu Shiyan had no choice but to purse her lips and silently quicken her pace.
With Zhong Heng helping to buy time at the gambling den, it should still be possible to get there in time.
The mere thought of his mother's death filled him with an overwhelming grief that he could not suppress.
After planning for so many years, he finally had the opportunity to find out the truth and avenge his mother after leaving the palace and establishing his own household.
Although his mother hadn't left any letters, perhaps because she didn't want him to investigate, he had a gut feeling that there was something fishy about her accident.
The most suspicious parties are the Empress and Chu Wan, and perhaps others who conspired, but we need to find Wang Pozi, who was brought by the Chu family back then, before we can reach a conclusion.
"Look, it's not far, it's just ahead."
The waiter stopped and pointed to a cluster of thatched huts not far away.
As expected, Granny Wang was hiding in the village, but it seemed to be some distance from where they were imprisoned, and the place was quite secluded. At least all the thatched huts looked pretty much the same, making it easy to confuse them.
The waiter led Yu Shiyan for a while, and after winding around several times, they finally stopped in front of a locked house.
