Chapter 367: Proclaiming the Imperial Decree
Yu Shiyan stood tall and elegant, looking down at her. The subtle light and shadow cast on his high nose bridge made him appear even more otherworldly and aloof. His eyebrows and eyes were like exquisitely crafted works of art, with sword-like eyebrows that reached his temples, every stroke just right.
"Yeah?"
His voice was calm and nonchalant, but it contained a hidden sarcasm. Chu Wan, however, felt as if she had grasped a lifeline and nodded hurriedly: "Trust your aunt. Your aunt knows that she was a bit harsh on you before, but she was really busy with trivial matters and neglected you."
But you are my sister's last child! If your aunt doesn't treat you well, who else will she treat well?
Yu Shiyan chuckled lightly, "That's quite a touching move to play the family card, Zhong Heng, does it make you want to cry?"
Zhong Heng kept his eyes straight ahead and shook his head solemnly: "Reporting to Master, I don't want to."
Chu Wan's voice was hoarse, her chest still heaving violently. Then she suddenly grabbed a handful of rice and threw it at Yu Shiyan, who dodged it as expected. "You ingrate! You're a complete ingrate! You little bastard, just you wait. Rong'er will definitely stand up for me. When I get out, none of you will escape!"
"Yes, I still have Rong'er. I won't beg anyone! His Majesty will surely remember our years of friendship and release me!"
As she spoke, she began to pound on the iron bars and even tried to grab Yu Shiyan's clothes.
Seeing that she had lost her mind, Zhong Heng took out a bright yellow imperial edict from his sleeve, glanced at Yu Shiyan, and asked him with his eyes whether he should announce the edict.
Logically, the person who handles the imperial edict should proclaim it, but after the emperor finished writing it, he simply sent Li Yuande to deliver it without saying anything else. Instead, Li Yuande bowed respectfully and said that he would leave it to Prince Mu to decide.
Yu Shiyan glanced at the imperial edict in his hand out of the corner of his eye, as if he was thinking, then shook his head: "Never mind, let's go."
Chu Wan, however, spotted the bright yellow light. She paused, then her words and actions became increasingly intense and agitated, her voice shrill as if it could pierce eardrums: "His Majesty must have issued an order to have me taken away, Yu Shiyan! How dare you keep the imperial edict hidden!"
"Yu Shiyan, you little bastard! You'll die a horrible death! Come back here! Yu Shiyan!"
The sounds of her frantic pounding on the bars, along with her screams, were ignored by the two men; once they were outside the prison, they could no longer hear them.
Why don't you announce the imperial decree?
Zhong Heng had already put the imperial edict back into his sleeve, but he still had doubts in his heart.
All these years of forbearance were for this moment; once the imperial decree was proclaimed, their great revenge would be fulfilled, yet they stopped at this crucial moment...
Even he doesn't quite understand his master's thoughts now.
"He issued this edict simply because he felt guilty towards me and my mother for what happened back then. If he were to actually issue an edict to execute Chu Wanqiu, it would be too easy to make amends."
In his eyes, all these years could have been resolved with a single imperial edict, so he wouldn't let him have his way. Besides, letting Chu Wan die like this was a relief for both of them.
Yu Shiyan's dark eyes held a hint of anger, which quickly subsided: "Bai Qiu can be brought back. There's no need for her to stay in Hehuan Palace any longer."
"Then...should we find a pretext to have her infiltrate the Northern Princess's territory?"
Yu Shiyan raised his hand to interrupt him: "Nalan Yujie is still unpredictable. Approaching her rashly may endanger your life. I will personally keep an eye on her affairs from now on."
