Chapter 289 Routine Prenatal Checkups

After the wedding, life returned to its usual routine. The old lady and Wang Qun, aside from occasionally bringing fresh vegetables from their garden and game hunted by Huo Haocheng and his family to the family compound, never bothered the young couple.

Time flies, and it was already the end of July. That day, Huo Haocheng took his wife to the hospital for a prenatal checkup early in the morning.

As her belly grew bigger, Ruan Ruan felt very uncomfortable when sleeping. She would often wake up in the middle of the night and go for a walk in the yard to get some fresh air. Huo Haocheng would stay by her side during these times. Sometimes Ruan Ruan would fall asleep standing up and leaning against Huo Haocheng. Huo Haocheng would then lovingly carry the three of them back to the room.

Not long after getting into the car, Ruan Ruan fell asleep immediately. Huo Haocheng, driving beside her, looked at his wife, her face flushed and fast asleep, her eyes filled with tenderness, and a warm feeling rose in his heart. He remembered how his mother would always yell at him and his brothers when they made her angry: "I risked my life to give birth to you all, just so you could make me angry now!" Thinking of this, Huo Haocheng turned his gaze to his wife's belly, one hand on the steering wheel, the other on her stomach. He said, "When you're born, you must treat your mother well. If you dare to make her angry, I won't let you off the hook."

The weather in July was already getting hot, and pregnant women are prone to feeling hot. Before long, fine beads of sweat appeared on Ruan Ruan's forehead. Huo Haocheng parked the car to the side, took out a handkerchief from his pocket, and gently wiped the sweat from his wife's head.

After arriving at the hospital, the two went straight to the obstetrics and gynecology department for a prenatal checkup. The whole process went exceptionally smoothly, and the baby was very healthy. After receiving the results, the two first went to see Dr. Jiang. It had been a month since they last saw each other, and Dr. Jiang's belly was getting bigger and bigger. She was more than a month pregnant than Ruan Ruan, and by the time they calculated, she was already seven months along. Considering her safety, the hospital had stopped scheduling her shifts. She would just work her shift at the hospital every day, see some regular patients, and then go home with Gu Jinghe when it was time to leave.

As Dr. Jiang's pregnancy progressed, Huo Haocheng tried his best not to assign Gu Jinghe any missions that required long absences. Even when there were missions, they were limited to Yuncheng or the surrounding area, and the round trip would not exceed one day. When there were no missions, he would try to get him back early in the afternoon so it would be convenient to pick up Dr. Jiang. Gu Jinghe was very grateful for this, and to express his gratitude to his brothers, he often brought them braised pork made by his mother-in-law or other snacks.

When they arrived at Dr. Jiang's office, Dr. Jiang had just finished seeing his last patient of the morning. This aunt was a regular client of Dr. Jiang's, as she was often sick, suffering from headaches and fevers. Dr. Jiang advised her to drink less tap water and to always boil the water before drinking it, but the aunt wouldn't listen. One reason was that the weather was so hot, and drinking hot water would only cause her discomfort; another was that she wanted to save on the charcoal used for boiling water. So she consistently ignored the doctor's advice.

After the woman had walked away, Dr. Jiang told Ruan Ruan about her condition. Ruan Ruan couldn't understand it at all; how could saving such a small amount of money on charcoal possibly cost more than she herself had spent on medical treatment?

After the two heavily pregnant women sat down, they first checked in on each other: "How's the baby? Is it bothering you? How have you been feeling lately? Have you been feeling unwell anywhere?" They then discussed the situation back and forth.

"The baby is fine, and there's nothing wrong with him. It's just that the baby is getting bigger and moving more and more frequently in my belly. Sometimes, when Gu Jinghe sees the baby's little fists and feet reflected in my belly as he turns over, he asks me every now and then, 'Won't this make your belly burst?' Every time he does that, I want to slap him twice. It's really both funny and frustrating."

Although Dr. Jiang verbally expressed her dislike for Gu Jinghe, she couldn't hide the smile in her eyes. Every time she thought about the first time Gu Jinghe greeted the baby, the two of them separated by her belly, their tiny fists or feet touching a large hand, Dr. Jiang felt incredibly happy.

"Don't just talk about me, talk about you too! This is the first time I've ever seen someone pregnant with twins. How are you feeling?" Dr. Jiang looked across the desk at the soft belly, which was much bigger than hers, and asked with a curious expression.

Listening to Dr. Jiang's question, Ruan Ruan gently said, "I'm doing fine now. Apart from my belly being a little bigger than yours, there's nothing special. The only difficulty is that I often have trouble breathing when I'm sleeping. When that happens, I need to go for a walk in the yard, stand for a while, and breathe some fresh air, and I'll feel better."

Ruan Ruan spoke so casually that even Dr. Jiang thought it was normal for pregnant women. But only Huo Haocheng, who was behind her, knew how much pain his wife had been going through. Every time she woke up, she would struggle to get up, put on her shoes, and slowly walk towards the yard, afraid of disturbing his rest.

During this time, her feet also started to swell, and she couldn't fit into her old shoes anymore. Her feet, which were originally size 36, now only fit into his size 43 shoes. Fortunately, her grandmother and aunt came over, and he felt more at ease knowing that they were taking care of her when he wasn't home. However, seeing how hard she had worked to get pregnant and give birth for him, Huo Haocheng felt both happy and, more than anything, heartbroken for his wife.

After chatting for a while, the two friends decided it was almost time and went to the cafeteria for a meal together. Afterwards, Dr. Jiang went back to her office to rest, while Huo Haocheng accompanied Ruan Ruan to the dean's office. She mainly wanted to check on the special cases the dean had mentioned last month to see if they had recovered.

According to the hospital director, based on Ruan Ruan's description of the situation and treatment methods, Dr. Li and Dr. Zhang worked together to complete the treatment plan. They performed surgery on the patients half a month ago, and now they have all recovered and were discharged from the hospital a couple of days ago.

Knowing they had both recovered, Ruan Ruan was very happy. After leaving the hospital, the two went to a charity organization. She hadn't been there since discovering she was pregnant; Uncle Kun and Uncle De were handling things there, and if they couldn't decide something, they would go to Zheng Xuyang. Gradually, they learned how to manage things at the organization.

Just as Ruan Ruan had thought, once everything was on track, they only needed to report to Zheng Xuyang once a month. Today, she went there simply to see Uncle Kun and Uncle De, since they had both come here because of her help. Before going to the charity, the two went to the supply and marketing cooperative first, buying them some snacks, clothes, and nutritional supplements.

Meanwhile, Ruan Ruan also picked out suitable fabrics for making clothes and swaddles for her two unborn babies, and inquired about baby bottles and formula. After all, baby bottles are very precious these days, and their quantity is already limited, with even fewer babies being fed formula after birth. Plus, there aren't many tickets available, and they all need to be pre-ordered. So they're asking around now to see if they can pre-order; if not, they'll have to ask their family for help.
