The next morning, Fu Mingyi arrived at the Huo family's house with two jin of meat, two cans of malted milk powder, a bag of milk candy, and various snacks.
Huo Haocheng guessed that Fu Mingyi would be coming back today, so he told his family in advance. Therefore, when Fu Mingyi arrived, Huo's parents, Huo Yue, Huo Haocheng, and Ruan Ruan were all there.
"Good morning, Grandpa and Grandma. I was in a rush, so I just bought some gifts. Please don't mind."
"Xiao Fu is here, come and sit down." Grandpa Huo took the stool behind him and placed it next to him.
"Good morning, Xiao Fu. It's good that you're here. Why did you bring a gift? You're so busy." Grandma Huo took the things from Fu Mingyi's hands and went into the kitchen. When she came out, she put the snacks in a bowl on the high stool next to them.
"Xiao Fu, don't be shy, help yourself."
"Wow, so early, you're quite proactive," Huo Haocheng said, carrying a large quilt as he came out of the room. After saying a few words to Fu Mingyi, he ignored him and went into Ruan Ruan's room.
Since they got married, Ruan Ruan's room has become their walk-in closet, and they move any extra things there.
What are you doing?
"Pack your things, I'm leaving in a few days. Get everything packed and take it to the post office to mail it. Since you're here, you can help me move it later."
"OK"
"Alright, go do your own thing, we don't need you right now," Huo Haocheng said, and started packing his things.
He didn't have many personal belongings; mainly, there were Ruan Ruan's clothes, wedding favors, and bedding provided by the family. Even after sorting through all the odds and ends, there were still several large bags.
Fu Mingyi was just being polite and didn't really intend to help; he hadn't forgotten the purpose of his visit today.
The Huo family elders had been waiting at home for Fu Mingyi. Now that he had arrived and they had greeted him, the rest of the time was up to the two young people. The elders, carrying small baskets and knives, headed to the fields.
"Comrade Huo Yue, hello. Although we've already met and know each other, let me introduce myself. My name is Fu Mingyi, I'm 24 years old, and I'm a police officer. My grandparents and uncle's family live in Hongxing Brigade. My parents are both factory workers. My older sister is married, and my older brother is a soldier. He's not married yet, but he has a girlfriend, and they'll be getting married at the end of the year. After the wedding, my sister-in-law will join me in her military post. I also bought a small courtyard house, so we can live wherever we want after we get married. My family is very open-minded; we make our own decisions about everything."
Although he knew Huo Yue agreed to date him, he was still a little nervous when he introduced himself. He kept observing Huo Yue's reaction as he introduced himself. From beginning to end, Huo Yue looked at him with a smile and listened attentively without any other expression.
This made Fu Mingyi a little uneasy. He had gone on blind dates when he was discharged from the army. Every time the matchmaker talked about his family situation, the more reserved women were fine, but the less reserved ones looked at him like he was a cheapskate. He knew his family was well-off, but he couldn't live with someone he didn't like who was after his money.
He thought to himself, if Huo Yue was also after his money, then he would accept it. After all, he liked her. He could just work harder.
But why is Huo Yue staring at me and smiling?
"Hello, Comrade Fu Mingyi. My name is Huo Yue. I am 18 years old and just graduated from high school. I work as a scorekeeper in the brigade. You have seen my family situation. My family is very open-minded. As long as we live our own lives well, that's all that matters."
From a young age, the Huo family elders treated their children equally, showing no favoritism towards boys. Instead, they constantly reminded the girls not to feel inferior to city dwellers just because they were from the countryside. They emphasized self-reliance and told them to be fearless in the face of provocation from city people, and to fight back if they dared to lay a hand on them. Grandma Huo's most frequent saying was, "Girls must not belittle themselves; only by loving themselves can they be loved." Thus, the two Huo girls grew up receiving such encouragement and support.
At this moment, Huo Yue shone brightly in Fu Mingyi's eyes, dazzling him to the point of infatuation.
After saying "Fu Mingyi, Fu Mingyi," Huo Yue saw Fu Mingyi chuckle and called out twice without getting a response, so she turned to look at her older brother at the door.
"You're back to your senses!" Huo Haocheng said irritably as he walked over and kicked Fu Mingyi.
Coming to his senses, Fu Mingyi saw the footprints on his leg and asked, "Why did you kick me?"
"Aren't you ashamed?" Huo Haocheng rolled his eyes at him, annoyed, then turned and went inside to find his wife.
"What just happened to him?" Although the two were packing their things, the door was open, and they kept an eye on the two people in the yard.
"Ignore him, he's shameful." Huo Haocheng felt ashamed when he saw Fu Mingyi's appearance, but he didn't see how he himself looked at Ruan Ruan. Wasn't this going too far?
"You're both equally bad," Ruan Ruan joked.
