"It's all good, Mom." His voice was soft, with a relaxed and tired air. "Whatever you ordered is fine. I just... want to go to your house for dinner."
"Okay, okay, let's go home for dinner." Mom's voice was so gentle that it could drip water. "Don't worry about anything, just give it to me. Be careful on the way, and let me know when you get on the plane, okay?"
"Yeah. Got it." He paused, his voice lowered, "Mom..."
"Um?"
"It's okay." He took a deep breath, "I just... missed the seafood noodles you made."
The mother on the other end of the phone seemed stunned for a moment, then her voice became even more smiling, even a little nasal: "Dear, I'll make it for you when I get home. Make a big bowl with lots of shrimp and abalone, as much as you can eat."
The call ended. Ouyangguang slowly put down his phone. The screen went completely dark and automatically turned off. But he could still hear his mother's gentle, smiling voice echoing in his ears.
He gently rested his forehead against the cool window and closed his eyes. The train was still quiet; the passengers seemed all asleep. But an invisible warmth called "home" had quietly dispelled some of the coldness and fatigue that had settled in his heart.
Ouyangguang turned his head and looked at Zhang Yixing, who was sitting diagonally behind him and also resting with his eyes closed due to exhaustion. "Brother."
Zhang Yixing opened his eyes, bloodshot, and looked at him inquiringly.
"On the 12th, I'm going to Shenzhen to hold my wedding ceremony." Ouyangguang's voice was very calm. "Would you like to go with me?"
Zhang Yi was stunned for a few seconds, then he understood. A warm smile appeared on his tired face. He reached out and squeezed Ouyang Yangguang's shoulder firmly. "Of course. For something this big, I have to be there."
"Thank you, brother."
After solving one thing, another thing lingers in my mind.
After returning to the dormitory, Ouyangguang immediately charged his phone. He clicked on the familiar cat avatar, and the chat window was still stuck on a brief discussion of a TV series from a few days ago. His fingertips hovered for a moment, typing and deleting, over and over again.
The final message was still simple and straightforward: "I'm here. The company gave us a day off for Thanksgiving. The day after tomorrow is my real birthday. I'm going to Shenzhen to have a birthday party. Come with me tomorrow?"
The wait for a reply stretched on for an incomparably long time. The light and shadow outside the window flickered on his face. He could almost imagine Kim Ji-won's eyes widening slightly in surprise when she read the message.
The phone finally vibrated.
"Coming of age!... It's truly a very formal and important day. Congratulations, Hikaru! You're becoming a real adult!"
Next, the next one.
"But... I'm sorry, we're really rushed, and flying to China... might not be convenient. I'm so, so sorry!"
Ouyangguang wasn't terribly surprised by this answer. He could even picture her earnest, apologetic expression as she typed. A faint sense of disappointment washed over him, like a drop of water falling into a deep pool, quickly vanishing. He leaned over and said, "It's okay. It was just too sudden and too anxious of me. Sister, go get some rest early. Have a nice holiday!"
He turned off the screen, locking the light and that little bit of expectation into the darkness.
