Chapter 146 Wrapped for Her

There was a knock on the door.

Gu Xingze lifted his head from the flour.

Even though he knew it couldn't be her, he couldn't help but feel a faint sense of anticipation.

He opened the door, and Jiang Heng appeared before him.

"It's you..."

What's the point of having such high expectations? It'll just be a false alarm.

Jiang Heng was startled. "Why do you look like you've been drained of all your energy?"

Gu Xingze casually wiped the flour off his face and asked in a flat voice, "Why are you here?"

Jiang Heng walked straight into the house. "What else could it be? Your mother asked me to come and talk to you."

Gu Xingze didn't reply and went back to the kitchen to continue his work, making dumplings.

Jiang Heng sensed that he was in a mental state that was not right, so he swallowed hard and found a place to sit down.

"What are you doing? Why don't you get surgery?"

Gu Xingze silently rolled out the dumpling wrappers.

"Sigh...where's your wife?"

Gu Xingze stopped what he was doing, and that familiar feeling of suffocation came rushing back to him.

"We're divorced."

Jiang Heng slammed his hand on the table and stood up, exclaiming, "Huh?!"

He stood up and walked over to Gu Xingze, asking questions like a mosquito.

"She divorced you? Why? What did you do?"

Jiang Heng subconsciously assumed that Su Jin had proposed the divorce to Gu Xingze.

After all, Gu Xingze would never agree to a divorce.

So Jiang Heng speculated, "You wouldn't be trying to win your sister-in-law back by hurting yourself, would you? You think she'll feel sorry for you if you don't have the surgery?"

Jiang Heng sighed, "I really don't know what to say to you, you're so stupid."

"no."

Gu Xingze quietly arranged the plump white dumplings one by one, and denied it softly, "It wasn't her who filed for divorce, it was me."

"What?!"

Jiang Heng was shocked for the second time, "Why? Why did you divorce your sister-in-law? It's not a terminal illness. You can get treatment now and it will be cured. You won't be a burden on your sister-in-law. There's no need to divorce her over this."

Gu Xingze untied his apron, put the dumplings in the freezer, and only after tidying everything up did he look up and explain to him, "It's not because of this that we got divorced."

"Why is that?"

Jiang Heng couldn't understand what earth-shattering event could have caused Gu Xingze to agree to a divorce.

Gu Xingze groped for a place to sit down on the edge of the table. These days, dark shadows kept flashing in front of him, and he was always afraid that he would fall down if he was not careful, which would delay the progress.

"Because she doesn't love me."

Jiang Heng was still waiting with his arms crossed for him to continue, but Gu Xingze seemed to have no intention of speaking again.

"Gone? Just because of that?"

Gu Xingze closed his eyes. "Her acting is really good. I really thought she was deeply in love with me."

He laughed self-deprecatingly, "In the end, it was just a one-man show for me. Her love for me was even less than that of an ordinary employee in my company."

Jiang Heng listened in silence, then sighed.

"So what? She's already settled down for you, hasn't she?"

Gu Xingze stared at him blankly.

Jiang Heng continued earnestly, "You went to great lengths to marry her, enduring countless hardships along the way."

Gu Xingze lowered his head and fiddled with his fingers. "But she doesn't love me. I can't be so selfish..."

Jiang Heng exclaimed, "Why can't you understand? You two are a legally married couple, and you're the only man allowed to stand beside her. All the other women around her can't get close to her, and you're still not satisfied?"

"Besides, if you divorce her now, won't you be the only one who suffers?"

Gu Xingze flipped through the photo album, where there was a category called 'Wife'.

He only saw the people in the photos and seemed completely oblivious to what Jiang Heng was saying.

"Sigh, why did you have to put yourself through this?"

Jiang Heng sighed, "I really don't understand what you're thinking. If I were you, I would hold on to my wife and never leave her for the rest of my life."

After a moment of silence, he suddenly muttered to himself.

"She left so decisively, she wouldn't even let me walk the dog anymore."

His voice was very soft, but it was particularly noticeable in the empty house.

Jiang Heng's lips twitched. He thought to himself, "You're not even as good as a dog in her heart. Don't you have any self-awareness?"

He couldn't bear to see Gu Xingze so dejected, so he offered him some advice, "Don't even think about it, you definitely regret bringing up divorce. I'm being kind and giving you some ideas."

Gu Xingze raised his lifeless eyes.

"If you do this, you and she have a dog together, right? She's busy with work, and you're the one who's always taking care of it. Just say you can't bear to part with the dog, and then you'll have a chance to see each other every day, won't you?"

After saying that, Jiang Heng gave himself a high five. "How can a person be this smart! I'm too smart, aren't I?"

Strangely, Gu Xingze remained uninterested.

"I don't want to bother her; I want her to be happy."

Jiang Heng also felt deflated, "Shenqing-ge, who's more devoted than you? You're about to die of illness yourself, and you're still thinking about her."

Gu Xingze glanced at him. "It's not that serious. It just means the surgery will be done later. It's not that I'm not going to do it."

Although he couldn't muster the energy to do anything, he still didn't want to die.

Su Jin is still alive; I haven't completed the divorce proceedings with her yet.

"Oh, right, I saw you just made so many dumplings, take some home for me to eat."

Gu Xingze's face hardened as he refused, "No, that was for her. If you take it, she won't have enough to eat."

Jiang Heng's hand, which was reaching for food, froze in mid-air. "...Do you know what you just looked like?"

He asked himself the question and answered it himself, "Like a dog guarding its food."

In the past, if he had said those things to Gu Xingze, he would definitely have been punished.

But now...

Jiang Heng looked up, but Gu Xingze seemed not to have heard him. His eyes were unfocused as he stared blankly into the distance. There was flour on the side of his cheek, making him look both comical and pitiful.

Jiang Heng clearly hadn't done anything wrong, but he felt a sense of guilt.

"Sigh... What a mess this is."

...

Lin Shi tasted the 'kitchen meal' and gave a thumbs up, saying, "It's just as good as what you make."

Su Jin stood up. "Slander! That's just alarmist talk. How could what I made possibly taste the same?"

Lin Shi waved her hand, "To say the same thing is that it's aiming too high; it's still a little short of catching up with you."

That being said, there's nothing else to eat, so we can't really go and make a cold salad of zombies, can we?

People tend to feel sleepy after eating a full meal. Su Jin noticed Ye Shuwei's drowsiness and smiled mischievously, "What you showed me just now reminded me of a story. Do you want to hear it?"

Ye Shuwei yawned halfway through, "What story?"

Lin Shi also leaned closer, "What did I show you just now?"

Su Jin looked up with a smile, and the light shining on her in the gloomy environment made her appear particularly ghostly.

"Then I'll begin..."

Ye Shuwei felt a hand on her back and cried out.

"It's me."

Shen Yanxiu squeezed in, looking at the three of them expectantly, "Can I listen too?"
