Chapter 59 Bitter melon is a little sweeter than my life

Su Jin asked which ward Chen Yanxiu was in and peeked inside cautiously.

"Are you awake?"

Su Jin entered the ward.

Shen Yanxiu seemed to be in a daze just now, but he has only just come back to his senses.

Seeing the two bags of breakfast in her hands, I instinctively wanted to help her carry them.

Su Jin shouted.

"Don't move! You're still on an IV drip."

Shen Yanxiu obediently shrank back again.

After setting out breakfast, Su Jin shook her sore hand and turned her gaze to the person on the hospital bed.

Shen Yanxiu sat quietly on the hospital bed, wearing a large hospital gown and with his eyes lowered.

They look inexplicably pitiful.

Su Jin felt a pang of pity and guilt.

I went over and set up a small table for him, then piled the breakfast I had bought on it.

"I don't know what you like to eat, so I bought soy milk. Tell me what you want to eat."

When he opened the plastic lunchbox, Shen Yanxiu noticed the red marks on her fingers from being squeezed, and grabbed them.

"This is?"

He was nervous, but then he suddenly remembered something and his mood instantly soured.

"I'm sorry, it's all because of me."

He clasped his hands together and unconsciously fiddled with the bandage on his left hand.

Su Jin awkwardly withdrew her hand.

"It's not your fault. You got like this because you were cooking for us."

She changed the subject, "Has the fever gone down? What did the doctor say?"

Shen Yanxiu was about to speak when he was already done, but a flicker appeared in his eyes, and he coughed twice, his lips moving slightly.

"have no idea......"

"How could I not know?"

Su Jin frowned and, just like last night, used the back of her hand to feel the temperature of his forehead.

Shen Yanxiu did not resist and obediently pressed his face against hers.

Her pleading look softened Su Jin's heart.

Because the stray cats she used to feed looked at her with that same gaze.

Her mouth moved faster than her brain; she thought it and then said it aloud.

You're like a kitten.

Realizing his mistake after saying that, he quickly explained, "Oh, that's not what I meant. When I used to feed stray cats, they would look at me like that, so I thought of it."

Shen Yanxiu was in a good mood, with a slight smile on his lips, and nodded.

"I understand, thank you for the compliment."

Su Jin frowned, wanting to explain that this wasn't a compliment, but then thought better of it.

He's already in such a miserable state, let's cheer him up a bit.

I opened my portion of porridge and steamed buns and started eating.

Does your hand hurt?

Shen Yanxiu looked at the lingering marks on her fingers.

Su Jin smiled.

"What's the big deal? I didn't feel anything at all. I just met a little fan on the way and chatted with him for a while."

Shen Yanxiu listened quietly, his right hand receiving an injection, and he could only use his left hand, which was wrapped in gauze, to hold the spoon, making it very difficult for him to drink a sip of soy milk.

"Wow, I really didn't expect someone like me to have fans."

Shen Yanxiu was startled and looked up.

Su Jin still had a faint smile on her face. She lowered her head, scooped up a spoonful of porridge, and put it in her mouth, as if she had just said something insignificant.

But Chen Yanxiu felt very bad.

"You're great, it's normal for people to like you."

His tone was unusually firm, and even his expression carried a hint of seriousness.

Su Jin merely glanced at him and said casually, "Is that so?"

No amount of comfort will help.

Because it came too late.

The ward door was pushed open.

Lin Shi rubbed her sleepy eyes and complained, "Why didn't anyone wake me up?"

Su Jin was caught in the crossfire, saying, "I did crow, but you said you wouldn't wake up when it crows."

She pointed to another bag of breakfast, "Look, your breakfast is over there, wontons and sweet fried dough sticks."

Lin Shi smiled, "You still remember what I like to eat?"

"I've eaten with you for over ten years, how could I possibly forget?"

Su Jin smiled as she mentioned the fan from earlier, "Do you know that I was recognized when I went out to buy breakfast? It was one of my fans! I think I need to get some sunglasses and a mask to wear. What if they're not my fans next time and throw rotten eggs at me?"

Lin Shi burst into laughter, but after realizing what was happening, she couldn't laugh anymore.

"Why doesn't anyone recognize me? I need to go out for a walk."

After saying that, he picked up his breakfast and left the ward without looking back.

Su Jin frowned, "...I think the probability of encountering haters is greater than that of fans. I wish her success."

He lowered his head and devoured the rest of the porridge in one gulp.

She doesn't eat very elegantly; she only manages to look refined because of her pretty face.

Shen Yanxiu stared intently at the little bit of food that Su Jin had left uneaten.

"Um...can I try some?"

Su Jin paused, "This? Cold bitter melon salad?"

"Ah...yes, I want to eat it."

Su Jin placed the last few bites of food in front of him and asked in surprise, "You actually like this?"

Shen Yanxiu, however, asked in return, "Do you like bitter melon?"

"I used to dislike bitter melon, but now I love it. It's a little sweeter than my life."

The air fell silent.

Shen Yanxiu seemed to be trying to find a topic to talk about, not wanting her to think he was boring, and swallowed the bitter melon whole.

Have you known her for ten years?

"Yes, it sounds like a long time, but it actually passed in the blink of an eye."

He lowered his dark eyelashes. "How envious..."

"What?"

Shen Yanxiu raised his head, and the morning sun outside the window shone on him, creating a hazy glow.

"It's so nice to be friends with you for so long."

Su Jin paused in her ear-picking motion. He smiled gently at her, a smile that inexplicably warmed her heart.

It's probably because of the sunlight.

That's what she thought.

"You can be my friend too, although there are no benefits, but a lot of disadvantages."

Shen Yanxiu shook his head.

"How could there be no benefit? You're so thoughtful; you still remember what your friends like to eat after all these years."

He changed the subject and focused on her.

"What do you like to eat, Ajin?"

Su Jin raised an eyebrow. "Me?"

"I can eat anything as long as it's edible."

That's the truth. In the past, when she was just trying to get a meal at Lin Shi's house, she was always very careful, afraid that she, as an outsider, would upset her family and be kicked out.

So she eats everything; there's no dish she won't eat.

Shen Yanxiu wrinkled his nose. "Isn't there anything you don't like to eat? There are bound to be things you dislike, right?"

Su Jin leaned back in her chair, staring at the hospital ceiling. "Maybe it happened before."

"But I don't have the right to be picky about food. I didn't before, but now I'm used to it."

Her voice trembled as she leaned back, sounding indifferent yet tinged with regret...

She didn't know where this feeling came from.

Perhaps it's a regret about my childhood self.

Too weak.
