Chapter 43: Li Du Discovers Clues
Liu Jiao woke up at noon.
She opened her eyes and saw Sui Sui tidying up her needlework.
Sui Sui was facing away from her, opening the high cabinet, unaware that she was awake.
"Sui Sui, what are you doing?" Liu Jiao asked abruptly.
Sui Sui panicked and hurriedly hid her sewing basket behind her back before turning around.
Liu Jiao: "Sui Sui, you don't need to hide anymore, I saw everything."
She laughed, "The doctor told me a long time ago that I couldn't touch needles and thread anymore, I knew that."
Tears immediately streamed down Sui Sui's cheeks. She was indignant, yet tears still flowed: "Your embroidery skills have always been top-notch. You found some peace in the Sang family through your needlework, and now even that last bit of happiness is gone..."
“Don’t cry, Sui Sui, I’m not dead.” Liu Jiao sighed, “If this hand of mine can be exchanged for a life, it’s worth it, whether out of affection or morality.”
"Besides, it's not like I can't use my hands anymore, it's nothing."
Sui Sui was furious: "He owes you a huge favor, and I'm going to tell him right now!"
Liu Jiao stopped her: "Don't tell him. It will only cause him more trouble. He has saved me many times. What I did was insignificant. If we get along in the future and things really start to look up, I'm afraid that his feelings for me are something I've obtained by taking advantage of his kindness. That would be really unpleasant."
"Is he awake? I'll go check on him."
Liu Jiao was thinking about Sang Ji; the bloody hole in his chest was too shocking to forget.
Walking down the street, I thought about him waking up, and I felt a surge of joy.
Liu Jiao's steps became lighter and lighter.
She pushed open the door.
The scene showed the princess and Sang Ji together, with Song Shi beside them, looking like a family of three.
The princess was unusually not being taken care of by Sang Ji; instead, she was the one feeding Sang Ji his medicine.
Sang Ji's brows and eyes held a faint tenderness.
As the door was pushed open, Sang Ji looked over with her phoenix eyes.
That tenderness vanished.
Liu Jiao felt a void in her heart.
Two more guests came to visit Sang Ji: the princess's husband wearing a mask, and Jiang Jiang, who came to see Liu Jiao.
Liu Jiao greeted them separately.
Princess Li's husband was aloof, only nodding without saying a word.
Jiang Jiang returned her a shy greeting.
"Sang Ji, you're awake?" Liu Jiao forced a smile.
"Um."
"Are you still in pain? I see you're badly injured. I've heard that the medicinal properties of the Dream-Reaping Grass are very strong. I recently obtained a prescription that can alleviate the pain..." Her voice trailed off.
"No, thank you."
"Then can I stay..."
"Is there anything else?" the princess interrupted her.
Liu Jiao's expectant expression froze.
"The patient needs to rest," the princess said tactfully, subtly turning to shield Sang Ji behind her.
Sang Ji's eyes were fixed on the princess the whole time.
Perhaps because he had just recovered from his illness, he had become a little more indulgent, losing the restraint he used to have. He no longer tried so hard to avoid looking at the princess to avoid suspicion, and instead forced his gaze to Liu Jiao.
He did not stop the princess's actions; in fact, he was pleased to see them happen.
After fighting side by side with the princess in the outer city for the past few days, the two seem to have broken the ice for the first time since their betrothal.
Each of them became bolder towards each other.
Anyone who sees Liu Jiao like this will feel sad.
Can I stay by your side...?
This is the unfinished sentence.
Liu Jiao eventually escaped.
Her face turned pale as she brushed past Wangyou Jun, who had come to visit Sangji.
Wangyoujun witnessed the whole thing.
He walked straight past the princess, his usually carefree peach blossom eyes turning serious, and came to Sang Ji's bedside, saying to him:
“You’ve gone too far, Sang Ji.”
"Let me give you a piece of advice: take it easy. You'll break her heart sooner or later if you keep going like this."
Sang Ji ignored him and his words.
Wangyoujun tossed aside the gifts and turned away.
Song scoffed coldly:
"This girl only came because you were awake; she has no conscience."
"It was the princess who begged for the Dream-Catching Grass to save you, and she has been by your side these past few days."
Upon hearing this, Jiang Jiang hesitated, as if she wanted to say something but then stopped.
But in the end, he lowered his head and didn't say anything.
Li Du witnessed Jiang Jiang's reaction and narrowed his eyes.
