Chapter 1 Divorced
Millennium, Xiatuan Village in Guangdong Province.
It was the time when the sun began to shine brightly in May, and Zhong Hui was wearing a straw hat and squatting in the field pulling weeds.
Their Xiatuan Village is located in the suburbs, quite close to the city. Every family grows several acres of vegetables. Those who do not go out to work make money from the vegetable fields.
While pulling weeds, Zhong Hui was thinking about this year's income. Vegetable prices had risen a lot this year compared to last year, and she had saved tens of thousands of yuan. When her husband Ge Zhihua came back at the end of the year, he would bring back some more money, and she would be able to build a house at the beginning of next year.
Many families in the village have built four or five-story houses, and they make money every month by renting them out. Zhong Hui has been envious of them for a long time.
I don’t know how much money Ge Zhihua has saved this year. Thinking that the man has been away for more than half a year, and the distance between them is not far, and he used to come back every month in previous years, but he didn’t come back at all this year, Zhong Hui frowned.
"Zhong Hui, are you weeding?" A woman came over from the ridge of the field, carrying a hoe on her back.
"Aunt Meihua, are you here to pull weeds too?" Zhong Hui looked up and asked with a smile.
"That's right. We can only rely on the output from the land." Aunt Meihua sighed deeply and looked at Shangtuan Village across the river with envy. "People in Shangtuan Village are still comfortable. Once the houses are demolished, every family will have millions of dollars in their hands. Why would they still want to farm?"
Zhong Hui was also envious, but she also knew that envy could not be earned. The rumors of demolition in Shangtuan Village had been going on for several years. Every family had built high-rise buildings on their homesteads and planted trees on the land. It was still unknown how much money they would have to pay in compensation after the demolition.
Alas, she is not so lucky. She should just pull out the weeds and let the Chinese kale grow better.
Aunt Meihua also understood this truth and could not envy it. She chatted with Zhong Hui for a few more minutes and then went to work in the fields next door.
The sun was setting in the west. Zhong Hui cleaned up the weeds in the kale field and then got up. She first washed her hands in the ditch next to her, then brushed off the dirt on her body. Then she picked up her hoe and hurried home.
As soon as they reached the main road, they saw their daughter Ge Linlin running towards them, jumping and skipping: "Mom, Mom, my dad is back."
When Zhong Hui heard this, a smile appeared on her face: "Hey, let's go home now."
Ge Linlin, eight years old and in second grade, had just returned from school. Zhong Hui straightened her frizzy braids and asked with a smile, "Linlin, do you miss your dad?"
Ge Linlin forced a half-smile at Zhong Hui: "No."
Ge Zhihua rarely spends time at home, so Ge Linlin treats him as indifferent and doesn't care about him.
"You kid." Zhong Hui smiled helplessly and said, "Your dad must have bought a lot of delicious food. Don't you want to eat it?"
I thought Ge Linlin would run home happily, but she was even more depressed: "My dad didn't buy anything."
"Ah?" Zhong Hui was a little surprised. Every time Ge Zhihua came back in previous years, he would buy some food for the children.
Didn't buy anything this year? Didn't make any money? Zhong Hui comforted her daughter and promised to take her to the village store to buy snacks later. Only then did Ge Linlin cheer up.
Zhong Hui quickened her pace, and the mother and daughter soon reached the door of their home.
Xiatuan Village is located in the suburbs, and there is an industrial park a few miles away. Although the houses here are not as easy to rent as those in Shangtuan Village, they are cheaper and can be rented out.
Therefore, families with good financial conditions built multi-story houses on their homesteads and made money by renting them out.
Zhong Hui is very familiar with the village as she is in it every day. Just now, when she walked back, she saw that someone else had built a new house. Zhong Hui was envious.
When I got home, I found that the house was a red brick bungalow built more than ten years ago. The homestead was spacious, with a large yard and a longan tree planted in the yard. The tree was full of longans, which were about to ripen.
Pushing open the iron gate at the entrance of the yard and seeing that the front door of her house was open, Zhong Hui hurried inside.
"Zhihua, you're back?" Zhong Hui put the hoe at the door and shouted into the main room.
"Hey, Hui, I'm back." In the main room, Ge Zhihua felt a little guilty and quickly stood up when he saw Zhong Hui.
Zhong Hui took off her straw hat and hung it on the wall of the main hall. Then she looked at Ge Zhihua: "It's not a festival, why did you come back so suddenly? You didn't even call me first to tell me."
"I, I..." Ge Zhihua clenched his hands alternately and was unable to speak.
"What's wrong?" Zhong Hui saw something was wrong with his expression. "What happened?"
"Well, I..." Ge Zhihua was at a loss for words. Seeing his daughter at the door looking at him curiously, Ge Zhihua felt even more guilty.
He fished in his pocket, pulled out fifty cents, and waved to Linlin, "Linlin, Dad came back in a hurry this time and forgot to buy you something to eat. Come, take the money and go to the store at the entrance of the village to buy some food."
Ge Linlin carefully took the money and looked at Zhong Hui's expression: "Mom~"
"Go ahead." Zhong Hui nodded to her daughter.
Only then did Ge Linlin take the money and ran away like a gust of wind.
Seeing her daughter go out, Zhong Hui didn't ask any more questions. She poured herself a glass of water and drank it in one breath. Then she turned her attention to Ge Zhihua again.
"Tell me, what happened?" Zhong Hui said in a stern tone.
She and Ge Zhihua had known each other since childhood and had been married for almost ten years. She knew him well enough, and it was clear from her expression that something was wrong.
Zhong Hui sometimes wondered why she had fallen for Ge Zhihua in the first place. He was always hesitant in what he said and did, and didn't act like a man at all.
Let him grow vegetables at home, but he finds it tiring. Let him go out to work, doing some light work. The money he earns can be enough to support himself, and he can have three or two thousand left at the end of the year, which is already very good.
Zhong Hui glanced at Ge Zhihua. He was almost thirty years old, but this man still had a tall figure and a handsome face. She probably fell in love with his face at that time.
He just has a good face and can't take responsibility for anything.
If Zhong Hui were given a choice now, she would definitely not choose someone like Ge Zhihua. What a pity, it has already come to this, so let's just live on like this.
Seeing her silent, Ge Zhihua's heart was pounding. But when he thought of the wealth and glory that was about to come, he made up his mind and said, "Zhong Hui, let's get a divorce."
