Chapter 19 Marriage is all retribution
Mr. Li then turned his anger on Mrs. Li, saying, "It's all your fault! You've been protecting your good son, letting him drag things out until now without getting married."
Lee Song-shi covered his head, it was really painful.
Li Chi'an stood up, put the empty soup bowl into the sink, and said, "I'm done eating, you can continue eating."
The words that Li's father wanted to say next were stuck in his throat.
Li Chi'an's departure without any hesitation stunned Li's father.
Li's mother, who still had many things on her mind that she hadn't had a chance to tell her children, looked sad. "You should say less in the future. We can't control their affairs."
Li Songshi looked up at his parents, who seemed quite hurt, and said, "My sister has been in a bad mood these past few days. Please let her be by herself for a while."
"What's wrong with her?" Li's mother immediately asked, concerned for her daughter.
My daughter came home last night and has been home all day today. She didn't notice anything wrong with the other person.
Mr. Li stubbornly insisted, "Why is she in a bad mood? She has plenty to eat and plenty to wear."
“People aren’t pigs, they don’t have any worries as long as they’re full.” Li Songshi glanced at his father speechlessly. “If you’re always so quick to throw tantrums, who can live with you?”
Seeing his son's angry face, Mr. Li felt that his dignity as a father had been hurt. He pushed his rice bowl forward and said angrily, "Are you saying that it's all my fault today!"
"I can't reason with you." After finishing the last bite of rice in his bowl, Li Songshi got up and chased after his sister. "My sister and I are going out for a walk. Don't wait for us tonight, go to bed early."
Old Li has a terrible temper.
The two children also have their own ideas.
Before they even started eating, only she and her husband were left at the table. Li's mother felt disappointed and sad, and her eyes welled up with tears. "The two kids finally came home, and now they're making us unhappy."
"It's all my fault for talking nonsense." She blamed herself and also resented her husband for not being able to control his temper. "You should say less in the future. They are not like me. When you are angry, you can say a few words. If you can't control your mouth, they will be even less willing to come back in the future."
Mr. Li ate with a sullen face. Looking at the untouched dishes on the table in front of him, he was unhappy and couldn't help but feel regretful. However, he was stubborn and could never say a nice word.
"If we don't eat, we might as well starve to death. There's so much good food, we can't finish it all. I'll take it to the construction site to eat tomorrow."
...
downstairs.
"Let's go for a walk."
"I'm back."
The siblings walked side by side in the residential area.
Almost everyone who came into contact with them would greet Li Songshi.
He was a man of few words, and his responses were always "um" or "yes," but that didn't stop many people in the neighborhood from knowing him.
Li Chi'an wasn't a talkative person. When the neighbors greeted her younger brother, she just stood by and watched with a gentle smile.
Even so, the neighbors who passed by today looked at them with more intense gazes than usual, their eyes revealing a rather subtle meaning.
When Mr. and Mrs. Li finished their meal and ran into each other in the neighborhood, everyone couldn't help but gather around, asking all sorts of questions, "I just saw your son going for a walk with a girl. Does Songshi have a girlfriend?"
"Will we be able to attend your family's wedding banquet soon?"
"No wonder your son doesn't like my niece, he has high standards."
Mr. and Mrs. Li were both amused and exasperated. "That's my daughter."
Everyone was surprised again, and they all secretly envied the two of them for their good fortune.
I just thought that this old Li couple looked honest and ordinary, so how come they were so good at having children?
They had two daughters, both beautiful and elegant.
The intense envy and jealousy on the neighbors' faces greatly satisfied Li's parents' self-esteem. The last bit of anger they felt from arguing with their son dissipated under the constant compliments from the neighbors and the gentle breeze of the cool evening.
Seeing the smile return to Mr. Li's face, Mrs. Li also hardened her stance, "You go get the car, we're going to the mall."
I heard that my dear nephew has grown taller again.
Her son had just transferred several thousand yuan to her; with the seasons changing, she needed to buy her precious nephew some nice clothes.
Mr. Li was full of energy again. He turned around and walked towards the underground parking garage, saying, "You wait for me at the entrance."
...
A gentle breeze rustled through the trees, carrying a subtle fragrance.
Li Songshi was worried that his sister would be upset, so he comforted her, saying, "Dad is just that kind of person; he can never say anything nice. Don't take it to heart."
Li Chi'an raised his hand and gently pushed aside the branches above his head. "Now you understand why I haven't told them yet, right?"
Since that day, she has never called Chen Li or her husband again, and usually refers to him as "he" or "Xiao Gu's father".
“He’s a piece of trash,” Li Songshi cursed through gritted teeth. “You stay at home and don’t go back. After the divorce, I’ll go with you to move your things.”
He didn't want his sister to have any further contact with Chen Li.
Whenever he thought about the injustices his sister had suffered, he wanted nothing more than to smash the perpetrator a thousand times over. If Chen Li were in front of him now, he would definitely throw a punch and beat him to death.
“We still need to take care of him,” Li Chian said in a low voice. “His father has other women outside, so his heart isn’t at home. He’s very pitiful.”
“His father never cared about anything before?” Hearing his sister’s voice choked with sobs, Li Songshi felt an indescribable heartache.
"No matter how much he neglects the child, he always hugs the child and talks to the child when he rests or comes home."
“His father did that without considering the child. What use is a child if you only have one child? No matter how well you do, you're still only a 50.” Li Songshi’s heart hardened under Chen Li’s betrayal. “It’s an unchangeable fact that he will become a child of a divorced single-parent family.”
This is a wound that his sister alone can never erase.
"I know," Li Chi'an said, his heart aching. "We have to minimize the harm to him under the current circumstances. What did he do wrong?"
“He’s right,” Li Songshi sighed, “but who told him to have a father like that?”
No one is innocent in the suffering they endure in life; today's consequences are merely the result of yesterday's causes.
Seeing that Li Chian was too upset to speak, Li Songshi also felt guilty and remorseful, saying, "It's all because I was young and naive before, and I didn't stop you when you were about to get married."
He felt that if he had the understanding he has now, he wouldn't have let his sister marry and have children so young, misjudging people and marrying such a scumbag.
Li Chi'an has been suffering these days and can't help but regret getting married. "I was young and naive, and without wise parents to guide me, I could only be pushed along by the torrent of fate."
"Sigh, that's why it's better to be more mature," Li Songshi sighed. "Marriage is all karma."
This is also why he has always been unwilling to enter into marriage casually.
