Chapter 22 Xu Zhuwen
Hearing footsteps, the father and son looked up and saw the mother and daughter coming out of the room hand in hand, both with red, swollen eyes from crying.
Li Songshi gave Li Chian a gentle smile.
Li's father's calm, dark eyes fell on his daughter's face. He frowned, and only when she got closer did he open his mouth and say in a deep voice, "Why didn't you tell us earlier?"
...
As soon as Xu Zhuwen stepped into the house, she felt a sense of oppression.
The mother sat on the sofa, her eyes red, as if she had just been crying.
The father sat silently in the dining room, drinking continuously.
"Mom, Dad, what's wrong?" Xu Zhuwen put on a smile, trying to lighten the mood.
Xu's mother turned to look at her. "Nothing. What brings you back today? Where's Qian Song?"
"Qian Song is away on a business trip, I came back to see you all."
“Qian Song isn’t here, so come home for a free meal.” Xu’s mother glared at her daughter, then got up and went into the kitchen. “Your brother and sister-in-law took their child back to their parents’ home. I didn’t cook anything, so please make do with what you have.”
"Oh." Xu Zhuwen placed a bottle of wine she had brought in front of her father. "What happened to my mother?"
Mr. Xu put down his cup and looked at the wine his daughter had brought. "What kind of wine is this?"
"I asked a friend to buy it from France. It tastes good. I brought a bottle for you to try." Xu Zhuwen sat down at the table and looked at him with a smile.
"Okay." Both father and daughter love wine. In the past, Xu's father liked to drink yellow wine and white wine. Later, his daughter became an amateur sommelier and even obtained a professional qualification certificate. He and his daughter fell into the pit of wine together.
"He's drunk and confused, don't give him any more wine." Xu's mother brought a bowl of rice from the kitchen and placed it in front of Xu Zhuwen.
"Mom, I don't want to eat staple food," Xu Zhuwen said to her mother in a coquettish tone.
Xu's mother glared at her daughter, "Do you think drinking alcohol will fill you up if you don't eat?"
Xu Zhuwen said in a coquettish voice, "I don't eat staple food at night, I eat it at work at noon."
As he spoke, he pushed the rice bowl in front of him aside, got up and went to the wine cabinet to find a wine glass, which he placed in front of Xu's father. "Dad, pour me some."
Despite his wife's angry glare, Mr. Xu added a suitable amount of red wine to his daughter's glass, showing his love for her. "There's fruit in the refrigerator; you can wash some to go with the wine."
What is it?
"Oranges, apples, dates," Mother Xu said coldly, listing several fruits, "and grapes and mangosteens."
"I want to eat grapes and mangosteens."
"Go wash yourself."
Xu Zhuwen obediently went to wash the fruit.
After she finished washing the fruit and came out, Xu's mother sighed and told her about what had upset her earlier, "Your sister-in-law said she wanted to take Guoguo to move to Grandma's house because the school district there is good. She also said that the child in her belly is registered under their household registration. What kind of nonsense is this?"
“If I want to take their surname, then I will.” Xu Zhuwen is very open-minded about this. “It was agreed before the marriage, so there’s no reason not to agree.”
After a moment of silence, Xu's mother sighed, "She's carrying a boy this time."
Xu Zhuwen glanced at her father and found that his face was unchanged. Then she saw her mother looking sad and reluctant. "Whether it's a boy or a girl, they are my brother's children. If they take his mother's surname, then they take his mother's surname. Anyway, his mother is an only child, and all of his maternal grandmother's property will go to him in the future."
Xu Zhuwen felt that her nephew was going to inherit his maternal grandmother's family business and take her surname, which was normal. Her sister-in-law's family was well-off and owned several houses in Xianghai City.
But Xu's mother didn't think so, "He's our only grandson."
“You only have one grandson,” Xu Zhuwen retorted, frowning. “Guoguo isn’t your grandson.”
"Guoguo is a girl."
“What’s wrong with girls?” Xu Zhuwen pouted. “It’s not like we have a throne to inherit. Why are you still sticking to your old-fashioned preference for boys?”
"Would you die if you didn't make me angry?" Xu's mother was so angry that she almost fell over. "If I favored boys over girls, would I have sent you to so many schools and bought you a house? Did I give birth to you, raise you, and send you to school just to make me angry?"
"You're talking without thinking! Your nephew isn't your child, you can't just give him away like that. If you're so generous, why don't you get married and have a few more kids?" Xu's mother slammed her hand on the table, stood up, and pointed at Xu Zhuwen, yelling, "You're already thirty-six or thirty-seven, and you're still not married? Look at your classmates, their kids are already in elementary school, and what about you? What are you thinking?"
"At the very least, look at An'an, her son is about to start elementary school, and she's still a few years younger than you."
Hearing Li Chi'an's name, Xu Zhuwen felt a surge of irritation.
She really wanted to throw the evidence of her cousin's husband's infidelity in her mother's face and say, "Mom, stop looking at An'an. If you knew what happened to An'an, you should be burning incense and being glad that your daughter chose to remain single with pride rather than marry someone she didn't deserve!"
well.
I wonder what the situation is like for my cousin now, and whether she has communicated well with her aunt and uncle.
We still have to wait; we can't tell her mother right now.
Her mother is such a blabbermouth; if she tells her now, within ten minutes the whole family will know that her cousin's husband is cheating on her and that her cousin is getting a divorce.
My cousin and aunt will be laughed at by their relatives, and she will become the laughing stock among my cousin's family.
Thinking this, Xu Zhuwen forced herself to say, "Mom, you have to be careful when it comes to marriage and having children. If you marry the wrong person, it's better to stay single for life."
"Single? Single my foot!" Xu's mother's chest heaved with anger. "What are you planning? Huh? Tell me, what are you planning?! Aren't you rich? His mother and sister have been urging me for so long, telling you to get married quickly, get married quickly. You two are so old, if you don't get married and have children soon, will you ever be able to have any?"
"I think you just don't want to have children and are prepared to be orphans for life!"
That's really true.
Xu Zhuwen put down her wine glass and sighed deeply. "I finally get to come home, dear Mom. Can't we just sit down and have a proper talk and a drink?"
"No." Xu's mother was filled with resentment, which needed to be vented. "Why did I go through all this trouble to talk to you? It's because I hope you can settle down quickly so you'll have someone to rely on when you're old! If you don't get married and have children, what will you do when you get old and have a headache or fever? You always say you have things to do, but what is busier than getting married and having children? Not to mention that your father and I are getting old, even Qian Song's parents are in their seventies or eighties. Don't you think about them? Let them see their grandchildren before they pass away?"
“Qian Song is starting a business, and you all know how much work there is in the early stages.” Xu Zhuwen’s head was about to explode. “We’re already planning our wedding, so calm down.”
