Chapter 41 Fish Scale Monster

After some haggling, the two agreed on a price of 2,200 taels.

Since he had neither cash nor banknotes, Mo Yunhan agreed to go directly to Puheng Money Shop to collect the silver after he returned to the capital.

Jiang Qingwan then clapped her hands and said, "The problem isn't with the river, it's with Majia Village."

Since they were unsure when they would return from the village, Jiang Qingwan told Lian'er and Li Dou to take the fish they had caught back first, while she then boarded Mo Yunhan's carriage.

Compared to the carriage she had ordered at the last minute, Mo Yunhan's carriage was far more luxurious.

Even the patterns carved on the wooden boxes that hold the teacups were made by skilled craftsmen.

Jiang Qingwan glanced at it a few times.

Do you have many enemies?

Mo Yunhan asked, puzzled, "Why do you ask that?"

Jiang Qingwan casually pointed to a spot, "Even the teacups have hidden mechanisms. There are at least seven such mechanisms inside your carriage, and there should be quite a few more outside the carriage shaft, right?"

Mo Yunhan froze, then recalled the scent of golden chrysanthemum he had smelled on the blueprints Luo Jiu had given him that day, and his heart trembled slightly.

"You know about mechanisms?"

"Knows a little bit."

Jiang Qingwan didn't explain much, but raised her hand and lifted the curtain on the side to look outside.

The location of Majia Village is quite peculiar. Judging from the course of the river alone, it seems to be located at the vital point of a dragon or snake, where people make a living by fishing and live a prosperous and peaceful life. However, if you add the mountains behind it and look at the overall feng shui, it becomes the most yin place. Water can nurture yin, and once resentment gathers, something big is bound to happen.

The carriage soon stopped at the village entrance, where two men with harpoons stood guard in front of the village monument, preventing anyone from entering.

Ye Qi took the waist token from the Jingzhao Prefecture and said, "Some people suspect that there is a plague in Majia Village. My master has been ordered to investigate. Please make way immediately."

Seeing that they were government officials, the two men dared not stop them. One continued to guard the village while the other ran as fast as he could.

Jiang Qingwan turned to look at Mo Yunhan.

"With such a grand display, aren't you afraid the village will try to cover it up?"

The man's dark eyes narrowed slightly.

"I originally didn't plan to make a big fuss. I planned to investigate secretly with Ye Qi, but now that I see how confident Madam Jiang is, I naturally don't need to bother with those things anymore."

Jiang Qingwan pouted at him unhappily.

"I'll take that as a compliment."

The man chuckled softly.

"It was a compliment."

The carriage hadn't gone far when the village chief led a group of villagers to greet them, and they all knelt down in a dense mass.

"Greetings, Your Excellency the Prefect."

Mo Yunhan bent down and got out of the car, his aura subdued, and he looked like a refined and gentle scholar.

"Please rise, everyone. My surname is Zheng. I am not the Prefect of Jingzhao Prefecture, but just a lowly clerk. I have been ordered to come here to investigate. Please do me a favor."

Jiang Qingwan followed closely behind him and got off the carriage.

The moment his feet touched the ground, Mo Yunhan reached out and supported him.

"Be careful, my wife. I told you not to come along, but you wouldn't listen. Do you really think you're invincible just because you know a little medicine?"

The gentle voice carried a hint of indulgent reprimand.

Jiang Qingwan's ears tingled from hearing this, and she glared back fiercely.

Seeing that it wasn't the Prefect of Jingzhao Prefecture who came in person, the village chief led the villagers to stand up, clearly relieved.

"So it's Master Zheng. I am Ma Lin, the village chief of Ma Family Village. Don't listen to the nonsense from outsiders. There is no plague in our village."

The villagers behind him echoed him loudly, their arrogance growing, as if they intended to block him from entering any further.

Night Seven gripped his longsword, ready to strike at any moment.

Mo Yunhan glanced indifferently at the crowd, his aura suddenly dropping.

"Village Chief Ma, I am here today on orders. If I do not take a look, I will not be able to explain myself when I return to the capital. Do you all want the Prefect to personally lead troops to investigate?"

His voice wasn't loud, but it was incredibly intimidating.

Marin's expression changed several times. He raised his hand to stop the villagers' commotion and gestured for Mo Yunhan to enter.

"Master Zheng, I'll accompany you for a walk around the village. Where would you like to go?"

Jiang Qingwan asked, "Is there a well in the village?"

Marin glanced at her again, and seeing that she was a delicate young woman, he didn't think much of it and replied with a smile, "Of course we have them. Everyone in the village needs water. Although Ma Family Village is not big, there are quite a few wells, more than a dozen of them, big and small. Would you like to see them all, Madam?"

"I'll see everything." Jiang Qing replied firmly in a gentle manner.

Mo Yunhan naturally had no objections.

"Lead the way."

Ma Lin nodded, dismissed the other villagers, and led Mo Yunhan and the other two through Ma Family Village, checking all the wells, but found nothing.

Logically, if resentment seeps into the groundwater, it should affect the village's well water, so why is there nothing?

Jiang Qingwan looked up and glanced around.

"That's all?"

Marin, who was over fifty years old, said breathlessly, "That's all. I've checked all the wells where the villagers drink water. I told you, there's no plague in our village. Now you should believe me, right?"

Mo Yunhan looked at Jiang Qingwan and asked in a soft voice, "What else do you want to see?"

Just then, a little girl ran over crying.

"Grandpa Village Chief, please save my father! Please, please save my father!"

"Water Boy, how did you get out here?"

Marin grabbed the little girl, "What happened? Didn't your father bring back the medicine and he's already much better?"

Shuiwazi couldn't describe it clearly, so he grabbed Malin and ran home.

Jiang Qingwan thought for a moment and then followed.

Shuiwazi's house was not far away. The yard was very spacious, with fishing nets hanging everywhere and dried fish drying in the sun. The fishy smell permeated the entire yard.

From inside the open room came the sound of a man in pain.

Before Shuiwazi could even pull Marin inside, Marin screamed and scrambled out.

"Night Seven!"

Mo Yunhan gave the order in a deep voice.

The next moment, Ye Qi rushed in, and in the blink of an eye, he landed back in the courtyard with Shuiwazi in his arms. Immediately afterward, there was the sound of a broken window, and a man covered in fish scales jumped out, his hands and feet on the ground, his eyes bloodshot, and he roared at the group in a manner that was not human.
