"You sent someone to follow me?"
Li Anran stared in disbelief at the old man in front of him who looked at him with disgust.
“Lu Shen’s parents have been working abroad for many years, and Lu Shen was raised by my wife and me. Since he wants to get married and become the young mistress of the Lu family, it’s only natural that I need to investigate.”
The old man didn't care that she took the photos; he still had quite a few of her bad records on his hands.
"I think you're objecting because I'm not the eldest daughter of the Li family, right? These are just excuses you're making up."
Li Anran held the photo and sneered, feeling extremely ashamed and indignant.
"I don't care how your mother seduced the Li family from a stripper. If you hadn't inherited those shady ways, I could have turned a blind eye. It's a pity that Miss Li is not a virtuous person. You pretend to be so innocent that I really don't feel comfortable letting my grandson marry you."
Old Master Lu's words severely humiliated her, and those shameful past events made her feel utterly ashamed.
Her mother was indeed a stripper, and she was born after her father's dissolute lifestyle.
The Li family did not acknowledge her, and even her father disappeared after leaving a sum of money for her mother to give birth to her.
She grew up in dance halls with her mother, making a living among all sorts of people.
She hated men who groped her mother, hated drunkards who lived a life of debauchery, and hated drug addicts who puffed on cigarettes.
As she grew older, in order to protect herself from harm, she met some thugs.
She mediated between them, and although she was taken advantage of, she also deterred many people with ill intentions.
Later, she gradually grew to like the feeling of being bossed around, and she went further and further down the path of decadence.
“I am innocent. I had no real contact with them. That was my way of defending myself. Ah-Shen loves me, he won’t mind, he will accept me.”
She argued hysterically with the old man, trying to calm herself down.
"Really? You accept that I had ulterior motives from the beginning? You accept my wanton behavior? You should know that if you get taken advantage of, you won't even be able to get into the Lu family."
Old Master Lu gave a signal to the people around him, telling them to ask Li Anran to leave the Lu family.
Li Anran was politely ushered out of the backyard by two burly men.
She looked at the Lu family mansion, her eyes flashing with a fierce light.
"Grandpa, where is Anran?"
Lu Shen saw his grandfather come out, but he didn't see Li Anran.
"Oh, Miss Lu suddenly feels unwell, so I had the housekeeper take her home first."
Old Master Lu looked kind and invited Lu Shen to sit down.
Although Lu Shen was puzzled, he didn't delve into it because of his grandfather's smiling face.
"Grandpa, what do you think of Anran? Is she suitable to be your granddaughter-in-law?"
Lu Shen looked smug, believing that the Lu family couldn't find fault with Li Anran.
"Ah Shen, some things can't be judged by appearances alone. Your heart is too restless."
Grandpa Lu picked up his teacup and took a small sip.
He lay down on the recliner, closed his eyes, and began to rest.
He waved to Lu Shen, who was about to speak again:
"I'm a little tired today. Go and tell the kitchen to make a bowl of bird's nest soup and bring it up later."
Having lived with his grandfather for many years, he could naturally tell that his grandfather didn't want to talk to him now.
He was puzzled; his grandfather didn't seem to like Li Anran.
Seeing that his grandfather looked quite tired, he still personally went to the kitchen to quickly prepare bird's nest and send it over.
"You chased him away? Ah Shen finally brought one home, and he seemed so well-mannered. You old man are so arrogant, your grandson is a precious gem, and nobody can touch him." Old Mrs. Lu snorted at him.
Grandpa Lu didn't speak, but gently patted the coffee table where sandalwood incense was burning a few times.
Feeling bored, Old Mrs. Lu turned and left the hall.
Not long after, the robust old man, Mr. Lu, was nearly killed when he was hit by an out-of-control car while he was out having dinner.
Jian Ruoxi, who was on her way home after recording the show, happened to save Old Master Lu.
Although his life was not in danger, due to the shock and serious injuries, Old Master Lu passed away two years later.
After being injured, Old Master Lu disregarded Lu Shen's objections and forcibly sent Li Anran abroad, and strictly forbade Lu Shen from having any contact with her.
After seeing Jian Ruoxi, Old Master Lu kept trying to bring the two together.
"Ruoxi, I noticed you were staring at Lu Shen with such infatuation. Have you taken a fancy to my precious grandson?"
Old Master Lu jokingly asked Jian Ruoxi, who had come to visit him.
"If you keep teasing me like this, I won't come to see you."
Jian Ruoxi blushed and glared at Old Master Lu.
"I'm entrusting Lu Shen to you. Ruoxi, you're a good girl, please keep an eye on Lu Shen for me, I'm worried about him."
Knowing that his health was deteriorating, he didn't want Lu Shen to feel any guilt or desire for revenge, so he buried his suspicions deep inside.
He had also investigated Jian Ruoxi; she came from an ordinary family but was simple, kind, hardworking, and intelligent.
At this time, Jian Ruoxi was being sidelined for refusing to accept unspoken rules, her potential was being tarnished, and he wanted to help her out.
Hearing the old master of the Lu family say something rather sad, she quickly changed the subject.
"Knowing you like root carvings, I specially went to the mountains to bring you back a few."
An old man and a child happily started discussing something in the courtyard.
Lu Shen stood at a distance, feeling a pang of sadness.
He heard from the doctor that his grandfather's body wouldn't last much longer.
Two days ago, my grandfather told me that his last wish was to see me marry that girl.
He was extremely conflicted.
On one hand, there's the girl he deeply loves; on the other, there's his grandfather's dying wish.
After considering the pros and cons, Lu Shen had made up his mind.
Let Grandpa pass away peacefully first; as for marriage, he can start over.
Thinking this, he stepped forward and stood next to Jian Ruoxi, chatting with her and her grandfather.
Grandpa Lu's final days were happy.
Lu Shen's parents also returned to China to spend the old man's final days with him, and together they witnessed Lu Shen's wedding.
On his deathbed, Old Master Lu dismissed everyone and kept Jian Ruoxi.
“Girl, I hope I haven’t harmed you. Lu Shen is a good kid in every way, except he’s stubborn. You have to be more tolerant of him. Without my protection, your life in the Lu family will be difficult in the future. But I believe that you and Lu Shen will be together in the end.”
After speaking, Old Master Lu let Jian Ruoxi leave, as he wanted to spend his final moments with the person he loved most.
He pulled a yellowed photograph from his pocket; it showed a young girl waving with a bright smile.
Upon closer inspection, Jian Ruoxi's appearance bears a striking resemblance to the woman.
"Ah Li, I'm here. I hope you can forgive me."
As the heart rate graph turned into a straight line, the once-powerful Mr. Lu quietly passed away.
With the passing of Old Master Li, Lu Shen's attitude towards Jian Ruoxi gradually became cold.
Not long after, Li Anran returned to China, and Lu Shen asked her for a divorce.
Upon closer reflection, it's possible that Old Mrs. Lu's dislike for Jian Ruoxi wasn't solely due to her past work in the entertainment industry.
Everything is destiny.
