Exhausted, Jian Ruoxi returned to her room. She lay on the bed, completely drained, staring blankly at the ceiling, too tired to even speak.
"Is Miss Jane there?" I had just lain down when the maid suddenly knocked on the door.
Jian Ruoxi sat up in bed, quickly tidied her clothes, and went to open the door. Standing outside was the family's cook, who handed her the tray with a smile.
"Miss Jian looks exhausted; you must be worn out today. Here's some nourishing chicken soup and some hand-wrapped rice. Have a simple meal to replenish your energy."
Jian Ruoxi originally wanted to refuse, but seeing the cook's kind smile, she felt embarrassed to turn away and let her bring the food in. She was indeed extremely hungry, but too tired to cook, so she had no reason to refuse now that someone was bringing it to her.
"Thank you." She smiled gratefully at the cook.
The cook shook her head: "Miss Jian, as long as you remember the kindness this meal conveyed to you, that's enough." After saying that, she left without saying anything else, leaving Jian Ruoxi standing there in a daze.
The hand-wrapped rice was delicious, filled with her favorite corn kernels and tuna. Every bite was incredibly satisfying, and the savory chicken soup made Jian Ruoxi even more delighted.
After eating and drinking her fill, Jian Ruoxi sighed contentedly. She took the empty plate downstairs, but unexpectedly overheard a conversation at the door.
"The old lady specifically asked me to deliver food to Miss Jian today." It was the cook from before speaking, her voice still carrying a hint of excitement: "Young Master likes Miss Jian so much, it seems the old lady is finally going to give in."
"Really? Didn't the old lady dislike Miss Jian before? She often called her an actress and such." Another kitchen helper also started gossiping. They all respected Miss Jian very much; there was no master easier to serve than her.
"What do you know? Young Master likes Miss Jian so much. If it weren't for other people interfering, they wouldn't have gotten divorced. It's just that Young Master didn't understand his own heart."
Several people chattered incessantly, gossiping about their own affairs. Jian Ruoxi just smiled bitterly. Did he like her? If he really liked her back then, why did he risk everything to divorce her after his white moonlight returned?
The thought of the cold divorce agreement that resulted from three years of relationship still made Jian Ruoxi feel heartbroken and unable to breathe. But now it's all in the past. She doesn't seem to love Lu Shen as much anymore, and he has started pursuing her relentlessly again, though she doesn't know why.
She placed the plate on the dining table without going inside, and returned to her room alone. Sitting on the lounge chair on the room's terrace, Jian Ruoxi closed her eyes wearily.
Thinking that today's meal was sent by the old lady and made according to her favorite taste, Jian Ruoxi felt a little complicated. After all, apart from Lu Shen, the old lady was the most critical of her in the whole family. She always felt that she was using the life-saving grace to coerce Lu Shen into marrying her. Now that she has suddenly changed her personality, it is really hard to understand.
There was another knock on the door. Who could be looking for me so late?
"Xiaoxi, I knew you weren't asleep yet." Lu Jin squeezed in with a grin, carrying two cans of beer, and walked into her terrace without any hesitation, sitting in the spot where she had just been sitting.
Jian Ruoxi sighed and closed the door before walking over: "Lu Jin, why are you like a night owl, always out at night?"
Lu Jin stuck out her tongue and winked at her, saying, "Did Grandma bring you food today?"
Jian Ruoxi nodded and sat down opposite her, picking up a can of beer: "You're very well-informed."
"How could I not know what the maids downstairs were saying, their faces beaming with excitement?" Lu Jin opened a beer, took a big gulp, and continued, "I didn't expect our old lady to have such a change of heart. She knows that bad woman is no good, and it's better for you."
"Really? I don't know what she's thinking. I'm already divorced from Lu Shen, so what's the point of her being nice to me anymore?" Jian Ruoxi gave a bitter smile. The beer was really bitter, so bitter that she couldn't taste any sweetness at all.
Lu Jin didn't think so. Instead, she said excitedly, "Wasn't my grandma the one who was most opposed to it in the family before? As long as she gives in, you and my brother still have a chance."
Jian Ruoxi shook her head. She knew that it wasn't the old lady's situation that was difficult to overcome, but her own heart that was deeply saddened, and that a meal couldn't soothe her.
Looking at Jian Ruoxi, Lu Jin knew that her brother had committed too many sins in the past, and it wouldn't be easy for him to ask his sister-in-law to turn back now. Sigh, he had already advised her before, but she insisted on courting death. Now she's in the midst of a wife-chasing hell.
"Xiaoxi, I came to see you this time with a pretty good script. Take a look." As she spoke, Lu Jin took out a thick stack of scripts from her handbag: "Take a look at the content. I think the strong female lead character in this script is a perfect fit for you."
Jian Ruoxi took it and looked at it for a while. Although she was a little tempted, she shook her head and said, "I don't really want to act right now. I want to study more."
Lu Jin noticed the glint in Jian Ruoxi's eyes when she read the script, and knew why Jian Ruoxi was reluctant to take the role. She grabbed Jian Ruoxi's hand and pleaded, "Sister-in-law, please help me! I really need you. This film is directed by someone else; what will I do without you?"
Jian Ruoxi looked at Lu Jin helplessly amidst her coquettish pleas: "Won't anyone take pictures of your Lu family's eldest daughter's script?"
“But none of them are you.” Lu Jin was good at talking. She blinked her big eyes and looked pitiful. Helpless, Jian Ruoxi had no choice but to nod.
"Alright then, it's only ten episodes anyway, it shouldn't take too much time." Jian Ruoxi took the notebook and looked at it again before finally signing her name on the contract.
Lu Jin was overjoyed to have received Jian Ruoxi's consent. She hugged Jian Ruoxi's arm and acted coquettishly, saying, "I knew Xiaoxi was the best to me. You would agree to anything I asked, right?"
Jian Ruoxi swatted her hand away impatiently: "You should be thinking about how to explain to my agent Ran Jie how he tricked me into signing this contract with a can of beer. You'll have to listen to him explain a whole bunch of things to you later."
"He'll definitely be happy, don't worry."
