Chapter 146 Setting a Trap

After lunch, the family members went to work or rested as usual. After the two sisters played at home for a while, Lin Yanwan said goodbye to her mother-in-law and insisted on taking her younger sister back home.

This girl, even though she was clearly told not to disturb her brother-in-law's work, would still sneak into his room and quietly watch him draw Tom and Jerry.

This was something Lin Yanwan especially couldn't tolerate!

Don't think you can do whatever you want just because you're young!

"You focus on your drawing. I'm going back to practice my wind instruments. I won't bother you for a while." On her way home, Lin Yanwan sent him a text message on her phone.

"Waaaaah, baby, I'll miss you so much! How can I live without you?!"

"Don't stay in this barbershop, focus on your painting!"

Seeing the text message reply and imagining his wife's furrowed brow and angry expression, Jiang Xia smiled knowingly, gently tossed his phone aside, and continued working on the storyboard.

At his current pace, he can complete a storyboard for an episode in about two days. Including the time required for subsequent editing and dubbing, it will take exactly two months.

Later that evening, he finished organizing the storyboard for episode 15 and planned to send it to Li Weiya when he had time. Just then, the editor from the children's channel called him, presumably about something related to Tom and Jerry again.

Jiang Xia deliberately waited seven or eight seconds before slowly answering the phone. He said, "Hey, Editor Zhou, is there some good news again?"

"Director Jiang, you really can't hide anything from you." Zhou Lu laughed, "There is indeed good news."

Jiang Xia's smile gradually deepened. This woman used to call him Boss Jiang, but now that Tom and Jerry is popular, she has started calling him Director. Although it is just a change in address, it reveals a lot of information.

After all, not everyone can be a director. Even if someone holds the title of director, if all their works are bad movies, they will only be more despised.

He was able to start an animation company at the age of eighteen, and with just a makeshift team, he created the wildly popular Tom and Jerry series, which was enough to earn anyone's respect.

The saying "those who achieve success come first" illustrates this principle.

"Tell me about it?"

"After yesterday's surge in ratings, the station's leadership is paying close attention to the Tom and Jerry animation. Therefore, after the premiere, they want to renew the broadcast rights for a second run with Qitian Animation Company," Zhou Lu said.

Jiang Xia didn't speak, but gently tapped the table with a pencil in her hand. The crisp tapping sound slowly came through the microphone, putting pressure on Zhou Lu.

"Director Jiang?"

"Huh? Oh, sorry, I was just spacing out and thinking about storyboarding. Editor Zhou, what did you just say?"

"Director Jiang, I know you're busy, but you still need to take a break. If you get sick, who will draw Tom and Jerry?" Zhou Lu joked.

"Time waits for no one. I want to finish the second season before school starts. How can I not be busy?"

"Before the start of the second season?" Zhou Lu perked up. "Director Jiang, we had an agreement, didn't we? The exclusive first-run streaming rights for the second season of Tom and Jerry still have to go to Chongqing TV."

“Editor Zhou, we should remember those who helped us. This is easy to talk about.” Jiang Xia laughed. “But it’s still early. Why don’t you tell us about today’s good news first?”

"Look at my memory, I almost forgot the important thing. The station wants to renew the exclusive broadcasting rights for Tom and Jerry for a second run, so I came here specifically to tell you this good news," Zhou Lu repeated.

"Hmm... what's the renewal process?" Jiang Xia asked casually.

"The overall content is similar to before, but since it's the second round, the price per episode can't be as high as 4,000 anymore; it can only be 3,000 per episode."

Jiang Xia narrowed his eyes. If Zhou Lu had offered this price when he first negotiated the contract with the TV station, he would have agreed after some consideration.

But now that Tom and Jerry is a huge hit online, it has boosted Chongqing TV’s ratings by several percentage points in a short period of time. Now, not only is it difficult to discuss cooperation and price, but they are also trying to lower the price. Do they really think he is a recent high school graduate who is easy to fool?

The exclusive broadcasting rights to Tom and Jerry, even in its second run, still allowed Chongqing TV to maintain high viewership. After all, children don't understand whether they've seen it before or not; as long as it's interesting, they'll watch it every time it's shown on TV. It can be said to be the most stable guarantee of viewership.

“One thousand,” Jiang Xia said calmly.

"1000 per episode?" Zhou Lu was stunned for a moment, her tone filled with excitement. She hadn't expected Jiang Xia to be so easy to talk to.

"No, no, no, Editor Zhou, I meant one thousand per minute, and that's not even for exclusive broadcasting rights," he said, enunciating each word clearly.

The price he quoted when he first approached the TV station to negotiate a contract was 1,000 yuan per minute. Now, he's just back to square one.

He didn't think the price was high at all. No one in the world understood the value of cats and mice better than him; this amount of money was nothing.

"Director Jiang, you're really asking for the moon." Zhou Lu said with a wry smile. She thought he was kind-hearted, but she didn't expect him to be setting a trap for her.

"1,000 per minute, that's 7,500 per episode. Director Jiang, our station has never signed an animation contract for such a high price before, not to mention that this is only the second round of broadcasting rights, not even exclusive rights."

Jiang Xia remained noncommittal. Just because it didn't exist before doesn't mean it doesn't exist now. Tom and Jerry is an absolute masterpiece, and even if each episode costs 10,000, he still feels it's a bit low.

“Editor Zhou, as far as I know, many TV series are priced much higher than this, and each episode is several tens of minutes long, which is equivalent to my entire season.”

Zhou Lu's face twitched as she listened to his words. TV series and animation are not the same type of works at all. Moreover, the production cost of one episode of the other is much higher than that of animation. How can they be compared?
