On the way back, the two of them didn't talk much; silence was the Cambridge of that night.
A gentle night breeze swept by, and Jiang Xia turned to look at Lin Yanwan's face, which appeared radiant in the pale moonlight. He suddenly felt a pang of emotion; how long had it been since the two of them had taken a nighttime stroll like this?
"What's wrong?" Lin Yanwan suddenly turned to look at him, and casually smoothed her hair behind her ear.
He glanced back casually, blushed, and turned his head away, a smirk playing on his lips: "There's a dog ahead."
"ah!!!"
The screams were jarring in the night, and Lin Yanwan instinctively moved closer to him.
Where? Where?
"Oh, sorry, I misread it. It's a fire hydrant."
"Jiang Xia, you're doing this on purpose, aren't you!"
She gritted her teeth in anger and gave him a light kick, just like before.
But as soon as she finished speaking, she heard rustling sounds coming from the darkness ahead, and then a large yellow dog that was wandering at night walked past her unhurriedly.
"Dog! Dog!"
Lin Yanwan's nervous system delayed for about half a second before she shouted and dodged away. She simply grabbed Jiang Xia's arm, her soft waist twisting into an astonishing arc.
The sudden shout startled the big yellow dog passing by, who tucked its tail between its legs and disappeared in a flash.
Upon seeing this, Jiang Xia couldn't help but burst into laughter.
"How dare you laugh?!" Lin Yanwan released her grip without leaving a trace, and punched him hard to cover up her embarrassment.
Jiang Xia looked completely innocent: "I warned you from the beginning, but you didn't believe me. Who can you blame for that?"
"...I don't care! It's all your fault anyway!" She snorted, then suddenly realized that her tone sounded like she was being coquettish.
A blush quickly crept up her cheeks. She didn't understand why she was acting like a little girl towards him, since they had been husband and wife and had no secrets between them.
Or is it that I've become accustomed to depending on him over the past twelve years?
Lin Yanwan took a few deep breaths and rubbed her face vigorously. Fortunately, it was pitch black all around, so her facial expression couldn't be seen.
Otherwise, she would rather find a crack in the ground to crawl into.
"Fine, fine, I was wrong, okay?" Jiang Xia said helplessly. This scene reminded him of the past.
"That's exactly right!"
After they finished speaking, they both fell silent.
Lin Yanwan followed silently behind him, her heart filled with complex emotions.
There was a time when Jiang Xia indulged her just like he does now. Back then, the two were incredibly loving, inseparable, and had endless things to talk about.
But when exactly did the two start arguing over trivial matters? Was it after his parents passed away, or when he gave up on his dreams and became depressed?
Or perhaps, both.
Unbeknownst to them, the two had already arrived at the residential area where Lin Yanwan lived.
Jiang Xia looked up and saw that some residents had lit candles, their lights flickering faintly.
"We've arrived. You can go up by yourself. I'll head back now."
After saying that, he turned around without any hesitation. Although this place was his home in his previous life, it had nothing to do with him now.
Looking at the pitch-black interior of her residential complex, with the dark stairwell resembling a gaping maw, Lin Yanwan felt her legs go weak.
She swallowed hard and said pleadingly, "Wait a minute."
"What's wrong?" Jiang Xia stopped and turned to look at her.
Lin Yanwan took a deep breath: "My home is on the thirteenth floor."
"I know."
"Could you take me upstairs?"
Jiang Xia: "???"
Something's not right about this plot. And since the two have already broken up, why is he going to his ex-wife's house? What if he sees his in-laws? Wouldn't that be awkward?
"The power's out, the elevator's not working, I have to take the stairs." She looked pitiful and pleaded, "I'm afraid of the dark, and I'm afraid of ghosts. What if there's something unclean in the stairwell..."
Hearing this, Jiang Xia realized he had been overthinking things.
"Hmm, let's go."
He readily agreed; since he'd already delivered it here, it seemed reasonable to deliver it to his doorstep as well.
As they walked along the path, just as they reached the gate of Building 3, a bright beam of flashlight shone down on them.
Jiang Xia squinted and subconsciously raised his arm to shield his eyes. The next second, he heard Lin Xiaoman's delighted voice.
"Sister! Sister! I'm here!"
Lin Xiaoman skipped and hopped towards them, her flashlight beam waving wildly.
"Xiaoman, slow down, watch your step, and be careful not to fall."
A woman's voice came from ahead, her tone very gentle.
Jiang Xia's heart skipped a beat, and she unconsciously clenched her fingers, suddenly feeling tense.
Oh no, I've run into my mother-in-law. If I'd known someone would be coming to pick her up, I shouldn't have agreed.
Hearing his somewhat rapid breathing, Lin Yanwan turned her head to look at his face and found it inexplicably funny.
Since his parents-in-law passed away one after another in his previous life, Jiang Xia transferred the love he had for his parents to his parents-in-law. His mother-in-law, seeing his pitiful state, also raised him as her own son.
The relationship between the mother and son-in-law can be described as incredibly harmonious.
So Lin Yanwan really didn't know why he was so nervous. Did her mother think she could eat him?
She coughed lightly and lowered her voice, saying, "She's my mom now, not your mom. Can't you just think about it the same way?"
Upon hearing this, Jiang Xia couldn't help but roll her eyes.
"If you ran into my mom, would you be nervous?"
Lin Yanwan's breath hitched.
