"The problem isn't with her, it's with you. What do you think of him?" Ji Wanqiu glanced at the rearview mirror and said calmly.
Lin Yanwan snapped out of her reverie, gently brushed her hair behind her ear, and sighed softly at the night outside the window.
"friend."
They can only be friends. She thought to herself.
"Actually, I think Xiao Jiang is a pretty good person, and Xiao Man likes him too. Rather than you finding another guy to date later, I could accept him as my son-in-law. Yan Wan, are you really not going to consider it?" Ji Wanqiu said sarcastically.
"Mom, stop talking. It's impossible for me to be with him." Lin Yanwan shook her head. The happiest and most fulfilling days had already ended in the previous timeline. The two of them... could not go back.
Hearing this, Ji Wanqiu finally believed that her daughter had not been in a relationship, at least not at such a crucial time as the college entrance examination.
"You said it yourself, I didn't force you~" she said with a smile.
Having figured out her daughter's personal issues, Ji Wanqiu finally breathed a sigh of relief. She gradually increased the speed of her car and soon drove into the parking lot of her residential complex.
"Mom, I'll carry Xiaoman on my back, here you go."
Ji Wanqiu was stunned for a moment, only to see her daughter slap her hand in her palm. When she opened it, she saw that it was the five hundred yuan that she had just handed to Jiang Xia.
"How could this be..."
"He didn't want it."
After Lin Yanwan finished speaking, she went to the passenger side, unbuckled her sister's seatbelt, and carried her out of the car.
The little one was sleeping soundly, smacking his lips and humming incoherently.
"Brother and sister, please don't separate..."
Lin Yanwan's face darkened.
◇
Candles were lit in the living room. Xia Shanshan and Jiang Wende sat on the sofa in silence, glancing at the wall clock every now and then. Usually, their son would have been home by now.
"Should I drive over and go look for him?" Jiang Wende suddenly said.
"Let's wait a little longer. Xiaxia is an adult now. Even if something happens on her way home, she can take care of herself." Even so, Xia Shanshan couldn't hide the worry on her face.
"But it's so late, and the power's out. Where could he have gone?"
As soon as he finished speaking, the sound of the door opening suddenly rang out.
The couple looked at each other, and at the same time, a weight was lifted from their hearts.
"Mom, I'm home."
Jiang Xia changed her shoes at the door and saw her parents still waiting for her by the candlelight, which warmed her heart.
"Dad, Mom, I'm sorry to have worried you."
Xia Shanshan stood up and looked at her: "Are you hungry? Mom will cook you a bowl of noodles?"
Thinking about how she would be staying up all night to paint, Jiang Xia nodded: "Thank you, Mom, but it's only two ounces of noodles, I can't eat too much."
Xia Shanshan smiled and then went into the kitchen.
"You still want to go back to your room to read when the power is out?" Jiang Wende frowned as he saw him carrying a schoolbag.
"Okay, I'll watch for a while."
"Let's just forget about the power outage today. There's no rush. Get some rest and be well-rested so you can concentrate better in class tomorrow."
"Dad, I know. You should get some rest too."
The parents didn't ask their son why he was home so late, clearly showing they trusted him.
"Um."
Jiang Wende nodded, got up, patted him on the shoulder, and went back to his room.
Sitting down at his desk with a lit candle, Jiang Xia rested his chin on his hand, and couldn't help but chuckle as he thought about what had happened that evening.
My mother-in-law is still the same as ever. I wonder who her future son-in-law will be? Speaking of which, I wonder if my actions tonight have made her misunderstand our relationship?
He took a deep breath, temporarily setting aside his extraneous thoughts, and took out the unfinished storyboard to continue drawing.
This was only the first day. His goal was to finish all the original drawings for the first episode in one week, and then spend another week on post-production coloring and editing.
In any case, the quality of the first episode is crucial to his future plans.
Not long after, Xia Shanshan knocked on the bedroom door.
"Xiaxia, the noodles are ready."
A few seconds later, Jiang Xia walked out of the room, smelling the fragrance in the air, and couldn't help but feel a strong urge to eat.
"Mom, you go back to your room and rest first. I'll wash the dishes myself in a bit."
"It's okay, you eat first and see if it's good?" Xia Shanshan sat down next to him. At this moment, she was no longer the elementary school teacher, but a mother worried about her child.
"My mom made it, it has to be delicious." Jiang Xia said, taking a bite of the fried egg and then a big mouthful of noodles, instantly satisfied.
It is said that a child with a mother is a treasure, while a child without a mother is like a blade of grass. He finally understood this saying after losing his mother in his previous life.
As I ate, my eyes involuntarily became a little moist.
“After school tonight, I walked a classmate home because he’s afraid of walking alone at night, so it took a little longer than usual. I’m sorry to have worried you and Dad,” he suddenly said.
Xia Shanshan paused for a moment, then laughed: "You don't need to explain these things to us. You've grown up and know how to act appropriately. However, you did a good job of taking your classmate home."
She wondered if it was just her imagination, but her son seemed to have suddenly become much more sensible these past two days.
"It's all thanks to my mom's good upbringing," Jiang Xia immediately flattered.
Xia Shanshan's lips curled slightly: "I don't remember putting sugar in the seasoning, so why do your lips sound like they're coated with honey?"
"Hehehe, to be honest, everyone says that parents are a child's first teacher. Since I'm both a parent and a teacher, I'm here to talk about it."
"Stop talking nonsense and eat quickly so I can wash the dishes."
