Yang Yunqing gripped Ye Feng's arm tightly. "Ye Feng, if it weren't for Liu Qingyi, would you... would you choose me?"
At the critical moment of life and death, this was the question she asked.
Ye Feng looked at her, his eyes filled with complex emotions.
He opened his mouth, but finally managed to utter three words with difficulty: "Maybe."
Hope rekindled in Yang Yunqing's eyes.
How she wished time could stand still at this moment.
Suddenly, the roar of the machine disappeared.
The conveyor belt stopped running, and the scrapped car came to a stop just half a meter away from the shredder.
The enormous blade was right in front of them.
Having narrowly escaped death, Yang Yunqing, a survivor, burst into tears.
She opened her mouth, about to say something, when a voice came from outside the car.
"What's the rush? Let's get you out first, then we'll give you a chance to pour out your hearts to each other."
Chen Yiyi held a crowbar in one hand and braced herself against the car door with the other, a mocking smile on her face.
She pried open the car door, pulled Yang Yunqing out first, and then gestured with her chin to Ye Feng, "Can you get out by yourself?"
Ye Feng nodded and got out of the car.
The sound of police sirens could be heard in the distance, growing louder as they approached.
Yang Yunqing was helped by the police to the ambulance.
Just before getting into the car, she turned back to look at Ye Feng, a thousand words stuck in her throat, but in the end she said nothing.
Yang Yunqing held back her tears; she dared not ask for more.
Ye Feng already has a girlfriend, and she probably no longer has a place in his heart.
She was already very surprised that he rushed here today despite all the danger.
During their last meeting, Ye Feng made it very clear that they could only be ordinary friends.
Chen Yiyi crossed her arms and watched the scene coldly. In her eyes, Yang Yunqing's struggle and forbearance were nothing more than a trick of playing hard to get.
Thinking of this, my heart was instantly filled with disgust.
"What, are you reluctant to part? Should I ask the police to wait a bit and give you more time to catch up?" Chen Yiyi's tone was full of sarcasm.
Ye Feng withdrew his gaze from Yang Yunqing and turned to Chen Yiyi: "What are you talking about?"
Chen Yiyi sneered: "Still pretending to be stupid? Anyone can see how lovey-dovey you two are."
Ye Feng said helplessly, "I don't know what you're talking about."
She scoffed at Ye Feng's reaction: "Didn't you say you were already taken? What, are you still thinking about your ex?"
Ye Feng grew even more impatient: "What's it to you?"
Chen Yiyi stood her ground: "I just can't stand people who want more than they have."
Ye Feng felt a headache coming on, and he didn't want to get entangled with Chen Yiyi any longer: "You seem to be in a good mood. Did you catch the person?"
Chen Yiyi's attention was indeed diverted, and she proudly raised her chin: "Of course, thanks to your prior reminder, the police had already set up a trap at that hidden exit. As soon as they came out, they were all caught in one fell swoop."
She paused, then her tone suddenly shifted to one of admiration, "How did you figure out they would escape from there?"
Ye Feng pointed to his head as an answer.
Then, he turned to leave.
"Stop." Chen Yiyi called out to Ye Feng, who was turning to leave. "The police still need to take your statement."
Ye Feng waved his hand: "I have something to do. Tell them I'll go over later."
Chen Yiyi was somewhat displeased: "Who do you think you are? You think you can just dismiss the police with a few words?"
"Get it done for me." Ye Feng said calmly as he took out his phone. "I'll treat you to dinner later."
Chen Yiyi watched his retreating figure, feeling somewhat displeased, but considering Ye Feng's previous cooperation, she still agreed: "Alright, I'll help you this time, but it won't be so easy next time."
Ye Feng didn't turn around, but simply waved his hand in response.
He understood Chen Yiyi's pride and knew he didn't have time to get entangled with her right now.
He needed to let Yang Yunqing know he was safe as soon as possible.
Ye Feng first called Yang Yunqing's mother, briefly explained the situation, and only said that Yang Yunqing had suffered minor injuries and that she didn't need to worry.
After hanging up the phone, he contacted Wang Furong again to let her know he was safe.
Finally, Ye Feng returned to the Xiong family.
The mother bear and her sister-in-law were busy in the kitchen.
"You're back? Go wash your hands and get ready for dinner." Mother Bear smiled kindly when she saw him.
Brother Xiong came out of the room, holding two bottles of baijiu (Chinese liquor): "We have to have a good drink today!"
Ye Feng nodded.
The food was served quickly, and the table was laden with a sumptuous spread. Ye Feng and Brother Xiong clinked glasses and drank it all in one gulp.
He cherished this brotherhood. Although they were not blood relatives, after experiencing so much, he understood even more what was truly important.
After a few rounds of drinks, Sister-in-law Xiong suddenly spoke up: "In a few months, my son will be taking the entrance exam for junior high school. He's exceptionally good at sports, and the school originally had a spot for sports students to be admitted without taking the entrance exam, but now all the parents are pulling strings, and the spot is about to be taken away..."
"Xiao Rui is such a good athlete, why don't you apply for a sports scholarship?" Mother Xiong asked casually as she placed a piece of fish in Ye Feng's bowl.
Sister-in-law Xiong sighed and served her son a bowl of soup: "He was eligible, but there are only a few spots available now, and they've all been taken by parents who pulled strings."
The mother bear put down her chopsticks and looked at her sister-in-law: "Just say what you have to say."
Sister-in-law Xiong hesitated for a moment before speaking, "Mom, don't you have connections at the Education Bureau? Could you help me out?"
Mother Xiong's face darkened, and she simply put down her chopsticks: "No need to say anything more, I won't open my mouth. It's Xiao Rui's ability to get in that he got in; if he's allowed to grow up without working for him, he'll definitely amount to nothing!"
Sister-in-law Xiong said anxiously, "Mom, that's true, but we can't let him lose at the starting line!"
Mother Bear disagreed: "Starting line? What is the starting line? Being down-to-earth and working hard is the most important starting line!"
Sister-in-law Bear wanted to say something more, but Mother Bear interrupted her: "Alright, that's enough! I won't help you pull strings!"
She felt wronged, but dared not argue with her mother-in-law. For so many years, her mother-in-law had always been the one to have the final say.
“Mom, that’s not what I meant. I just don’t want Xiao Rui to end up like his father. His father suffered because he was uneducated; he failed to get promoted.” Sister-in-law Xiong’s voice lowered, choked with sobs.
Upon hearing this, Mother Bear slammed her hand on the table and angrily said, "What do you mean? Are you saying I've held your man back?"
Brother Xiong's face also turned ugly, and the atmosphere immediately became tense.
Seeing this, Ye Feng quickly put down his chopsticks and tried to smooth things over: "Sister-in-law didn't mean that."
“Me, delaying him? He can’t become a cadre because he’s incompetent, why should I blame him? I’m just a woman, how could I stop him from getting promoted? What’s wrong with being a worker? There’s nothing shameful about being a worker! My husband has worked diligently his whole life, and I’m proud of him!” Mother Xiong became more and more agitated as she spoke.
