He Lingchuan bent down and took the initiative to extend his hand to Nan Chen.
Nan Chen paused in his movement, standing still with a furrowed brow, looking very conflicted.
He Lingchuan didn't urge him, remaining in the same position and waiting for him.
A few minutes later, Nan Chen finally gave in and took the initiative to place his hand in He Lingchuan's palm.
He Lingchuan's face contorted with excitement, but he dared not show it too obviously, for fear of scaring Nan Chen.
But when he tried to take Nan Chen away, Nan Chen stopped moving.
"Nanchen, are we going to have breakfast? We'll be late."
"Mom and I are together."
Although Nan Chen took the initiative to take the first step, his fear of He Lingchuan had not dissipated.
A hint of disappointment flashed in He Lingchuan's eyes. He lowered his gaze, realizing that Nan Chen had been observing his expression. He immediately put on his best self, composed himself, and said softly, "Nan Chen wants to eat with Mom, right? Then Dad will sit next to you and watch you eat, okay?"
Nan Chen hesitated for a moment, then slowly nodded.
With Shen Yanxi by his side, Nan Chen and He Lingchuan were not as nervous as they were at the beginning.
Breakfast went fairly smoothly. After Nan Chen finished eating, Shen Yanxi suggested that He Lingchuan take the two of them to school.
He had agreed to it yesterday, but today, as soon as Nan Chen heard that Shen Yanxi wasn't going, he pouted and looked like he was about to cry.
He Lingchuan felt sorry for the child and couldn't bear to force him like this: "Come with me."
Shen Yanxi frowned, indicating her objection: "You don't want Nan Chen to accept you anymore?"
"How could I not want to? But he's unhappy right now."
He Lingchuan raised his hand to touch Nan Chen's face, but as soon as he reached out, Nan Chen hid behind Shen Yanxi.
He sighed, expressing his helplessness: "I don't want to pressure him."
Hearing him say that, Shen Yanxi stopped insisting: "Then how about Dad and I take you there together?"
"good."
Nan Chen's voice was very soft, and He Lingchuan breathed a sigh of relief when he heard him agree.
At least Nan Chen didn't refuse to let him take him to school, which is a good thing.
They each held one of the child's hands, and as soon as they opened the door, He Lingchuan saw Cao Xue walking towards them.
She was carrying a cake-shaped object in her hand, and when she saw the two of them, she froze on the spot.
"Lingchuan, you guys came out together?"
Cao Xue came here entirely because she was worried about He Lingchuan. She wanted to come and see him before going to work, but she didn't expect to run into him and Shen Yanxi together.
He Lingchuan was a little embarrassed. He shielded Shen Yanxi and the children behind him and asked, "How did you know I lived here?"
"I heard from President Gu that you two are living together?"
When Cao Xue asked that question, her heart ached. She suppressed her discomfort, raised her head, and smiled: "Why didn't you say anything? I should have bought more food. This isn't enough for so many people."
"We've already eaten."
Shen Yanxi pushed He Lingchuan's shoulder away, tilted her head back, and confronted Cao Xue: "What brings you here?"
She spoke with the air of a legitimate wife, and her gaze toward Cao Xue was full of scrutiny.
Cao Xue looked at He Lingchuan somewhat awkwardly, still unwilling to give up: "Brother Lingchuan, what's going on here...?"
Shen Yanxi stood in front of He Lingchuan to confront her, seemingly not intending to let He Lingchuan and Cao Xue face off directly: "Just as you see, what else do you want to ask?"
Cao Xue's mouth was slightly open, her eyes were red, and she looked like she was about to cry at any moment.
He Lingchuan couldn't bear it and was about to go over to comfort Cao Xue when Shen Yanxi stopped him: "What are you doing? Don't forget you still have to take the child to school."
After saying the last word, Shen Yanxi pushed his shoulder and walked past Cao Xue.
He Lingchuan took two steps and looked back, only to find Cao Xue still standing there, her hands occasionally lifting her head, and from behind, she seemed to be wiping away tears.
He couldn't stand it anymore and pushed Shen Yanxi away: "You guys go first."
Shen Yanxi was incredulous. Pointing at Cao Xue, she questioned He Lingchuan, "Are you sure you want to leave us for this woman? He Lingchuan, Nan Chen finally accepted you, how could you..."
"If you hadn't treated Cao Xue like that, how could I have abandoned you all? Did you expect me to just stand here crying and do nothing about her?"
"What are you going to do? Let her cry. You don't plan to be with her anyway. Consider this a lesson for her."
Shen Yanxi reached out to try to grab He Lingchuan, but he dodged her: "Wait for me for a moment."
He Lingchuan really didn't want to let this opportunity slip by, but he felt guilty about it.
He jogged over to Cao Xue and patted her on the shoulder from behind.
Cao Xue turned around in surprise and saw He Lingchuan, completely bewildered.
"Brother Lingchuan, why are you back again?"
"You go to the company first. Some things can't be explained here. I'll take the child to school."
Cao Xue looked bewildered. Although she was still a little bothered, she wasn't so angry anymore, thinking that He Lingchuan had come all the way to explain to her.
After comforting Cao Xue, He Lingchuan turned to look for Shen Yanxi, only to find that she had already left with the child.
That's right, how could Shen Yanxi possibly wait for him?
Looking at He Lingchuan's disappointed face, Cao Xue knew she had done something wrong.
She cautiously approached He Lingchuan: "Brother Lingchuan, what's wrong? Why aren't you saying anything?"
"You should go back first."
"Did I do something wrong?"
"You did nothing wrong, but... don't come looking for me at my house again."
He Lingchuan's tone was somewhat cold. He took a taxi to send Cao Xue to the laboratory and then went to the children's school.
Nan Chen must hate him now; he must think his father is a man who doesn't keep his word.
He Lingchuan admitted that he regretted it the moment he turned around.
But he couldn't leave Cao Xue standing there alone. Cao Xue had just undergone heart surgery, and he couldn't bear the responsibility if something happened to her because of her emotional state.
He Lingchuan rushed to the school, but the children had already gone inside.
He pushed open the door and was met with Shen Yanxi's indifferent face.
"You still know to come? Didn't your delicate girlfriend ask you to come with her?"
He Lingchuan looked up and around, trying to see the child.
"Stop looking. Nan Chen is completely disappointed in you."
Shen Yanxi walked to He Lingchuan's side, her face darkening: "I really don't know what you're thinking. I went through so much trouble to get you the opportunity to send your child to school, and you just give it up like that, all for a woman?"
Shen Yanxi snorted coldly, her eyes filled with contempt: "No wonder you've accomplished nothing all these years, you simply don't have the ability."
Before leaving, Shen Yanxi coldly declared, "I'll pick up the child tonight to avoid bothering you."
