In order to resolve the issue as quickly as possible, Gu Chengze immediately called the police officer in charge of Xu Fei. When the call connected, Officer Zhang hesitated and spoke ambiguously. Gu Chengze sensed something was wrong and pressed the receiver: "It seems something has indeed happened."
He Lingchuan looked puzzled. He snatched the phone and asked sharply, "Officer Zhang, what exactly happened? Why did Xu Fei's mother come to say that her son is dead?"
After Xu Fei went to prison, He Lingchuan never asked about his situation.
He specifically instructed the police not to be too harsh on Xu Fei, because he still had a family, and his family couldn't live without him.
It's only been a few days? Xu Fei is already dead?
How is that possible?
After waiting for a long time, Officer Zhang finally spoke. He did not answer He Lingchuan directly, but stammered, "This is a long story. I'll go over now."
After half an hour, Officer Zhang finally arrived. He walked up to him and went straight to the point, questioning him: "Officer Zhang, what did you mean by what you said on the phone? What do you mean by 'it's hard to say'?"
He Lingchuan's eyes were full of doubt, his heart was pounding, and he felt that something was wrong.
Officer Zhang lowered his head and took a piece of paper out of his bag: "You'll understand once you take a look."
He Lingchuan was completely bewildered until he saw the words on it, at which point his eyes widened: "Death report? What's going on?"
"It's just like what you see."
Officer Zhang sighed: "Xu Fei committed suicide in prison yesterday."
He Lingchuan's gaze fell on Xu Fei's mother: "So, she wasn't lying?"
Officer Zhang sighed helplessly: "She was pitiful too. She finally managed to expose her son, but he died."
"What exactly is going on?"
He Lingchuan gritted his teeth, his eyes blazing with anger.
He dragged Officer Zhang into a corner and questioned him: "Didn't I tell you to treat Xu Fei well? Didn't I say I wouldn't pursue the matter further?"
He never imagined that Xu Fei would commit suicide. He was so strong-willed and stubborn; he just wanted to teach Xu Fei a lesson so that she wouldn't harm his child again.
Officer Zhang lowered his voice, as if worried that he might frighten He Lingchuan: "You saw it when you first went there; Xu Fei wasn't in a good state. We were worried something might happen to him, so we even found a psychologist. We didn't expect..."
They were too slow. Xu Fei died the very night the psychologist visited the hospital.
He Lingchuan frowned, his tone somewhat heavy: "Then why didn't you tell me sooner?"
"I've been comforting Xu Fei's family lately, so I haven't had a chance to talk to you."
Officer Zhang looked at He Lingchuan with some helplessness: "But don't blame yourself or worry. This matter has nothing to do with you. As for his family, you don't need to worry about them. Leave everything to me."
“If you really could manage things, Xu Fei’s mother wouldn’t be causing trouble here.”
He Lingchuan looked at Officer Zhang with some dissatisfaction. Now that this matter has become common knowledge, even the business people around him are dissatisfied. What use is it for him to say nice things?
He Lingchuan's gaze fell on Xu Fei's mother, then he looked at Officer Zhang: "What do you plan to do?"
"We will try our best to make his mother realize the truth."
He Lingchuan's brows furrowed deeper and deeper: "Just face the facts? You just said that Xu Fei's family is not well-off, how could his mother just let it go like that?"
If she were so easily persuaded by the police, she wouldn't be here blocking him and demanding an explanation.
This can't go on, mainly because her presence here will affect other people's businesses.
He Lingchuan walked up to Xu Fei's mother, his eyes sharp: "How much money do you want?"
Xu Fei's mother suddenly froze on the spot, her eyes wide with rage: "I'll make you pay with your life."
As she spoke, she reached out to push He Lingchuan, gritting her teeth. Her relatives, who had come with her, chimed in, "You must pay with your life."
“Our family has only produced one college graduate in so many years, you have to give us an explanation.”
"That's right, we need an explanation. Xu Fei was driven to his death by you."
Just as He Lingchuan was about to speak, one of the people in the old building opened his phone and started a live stream. He looked relatively young and was probably Xu Fei's brother.
“Look at this man, everyone. He not only killed my brother, but he also refuses to pay compensation.”
The man walked up to He Lingchuan with his phone in hand, even pointing the camera at Officer Zhang: "And this policeman, they're all in cahoots. They deliberately killed my brother."
He became more and more agitated as he spoke, and eventually reached out to push the policeman.
He Lingchuan reached out to block, but the man grabbed his wrist: "You're not going anywhere either. This is your fault. You're the one who started it all. You have to pay compensation."
He Lingchuan pushed his hand away and asked him calmly, "So how much money do you want?"
The man hesitated for a moment, then looked at Xu Fei's mother: "Auntie, how much do you want?"
Xu Fei's mother suddenly stood up, nearly hitting the man's nose: "What do you mean, how much money do you want? I want my son back! What good is your money? Can you bring my son back?"
Her face was cold, and her eyes were filled with hatred as she looked at He Lingchuan: "I want my son back. If my son doesn't come back, you will pay with your life."
He Lingchuan crossed his arms in front of his chest, as if this matter had nothing to do with him.
After Xu Fei's mother finished crying, he finally spoke: "This was an accident. I didn't expect your son to be so incapable of handling things."
He Lingchuan disregarded Xu Fei's mother's feelings at all. He bent down and asked the person in front of him, "All you can ask for now is money. Before I change my mind and agree to compensate you, name your price."
Xu Fei's mother looked up at He Lingchuan in disbelief: "What do you mean? My son deserved to die?"
"I didn't say that. So what if your son died unjustly? Am I not unjustly accused? Why should I have to pay compensation?"
He was also a victim, and besides, his son brought it all on himself.
He Lingchuan looked down at the person in front of him and said, "You should be grateful that I'm willing to compensate you."
After saying the last word, He Lingchuan looked at Officer Zhang: "Regarding the compensation, I'll need to trouble you to negotiate with them."
He Lingchuan couldn't communicate with these people; all he wanted to do now was solve the problem as quickly as possible.
Officer Zhang raised his hand and patted He Lingchuan on the shoulder, nodding confidently: "Don't worry."
He Lingchuan was skeptical and unsure whether he could handle the matter well.
Officer Zhang assured He Lingchuan while forcibly taking the man to the police car. Xu Fei's mother ran towards He Lingchuan, baring her teeth and brandishing her claws, chanting incessantly, "You devil! You owe me my son! You owe me my son! I don't want money, I want you to pay with your life!"
