Chapter Sixty-Six: It was his own carelessness.

Shen Yanxi waited until He Lingchuan finished his porridge before leaving the room.

The two walked one after the other. Shen Yanxi originally wanted He Lingchuan to rest more, but since everyone else was outside accompanying Shen's mother, He Lingchuan couldn't stay in the room all the time.

While drinking porridge, He Lingchuan sweated, and the red rash on his skin subsided by most. The sweat soaked the stray hairs on his forehead, revealing the wound on his forehead. Originally, the wound was not very noticeable because it was covered by hair, but now that the stray hairs were all gathered up, the scar could be seen at a glance.

"Ling Chuan, how did you get injured?"

Mother Shen frowned slightly, her voice full of worry.

Driven by jealousy, Zhou Mingyan deliberately revealed the truth: "Mr. He, your skin is too delicate. Xixi only pushed you a little, how come it's swollen?"

Mother Shen's face darkened, and the corners of her mouth immediately drooped. She looked at Shen Yanxi with a cold expression: "Did you do this?"

The other guests were even more shocked. Shen Yanxi had just been serving He Lingchuan porridge, how could she have injured him so quickly?

They looked at each other, silent, yet unable to resist looking up, eager to see what would happen.

Shen Yanxi felt a little guilty, her eyes darting around: "I did it."

She admitted her mistake and, before her mother could get angry, said, "But I didn't mean to, I really didn't mean to."

Little did she know that He Lingchuan was so fragile.

"Accidentally? It's all swollen up, and you still say it was an accident?"

Shen's mother knew her daughter well. She was arrogant and domineering, especially since He Lingchuan spoiled her. They had only been married for a few years, and she was already completely lawless.

But Shen Yanxi was, after all, her daughter, and she couldn't bear to be too harsh on her. At most, she would say a few words, scold her, and then leave. She also believed that her daughter knew her limits and wouldn't make a big fuss.

Who knew she would actually injure someone? This isn't something that can be resolved with just a few words.

"Mom, I really didn't mean to."

Shen Yanxi walked forward obediently, hugged her mother's arm and acted coquettishly, while secretly giving He Lingchuan a wink when her mother wasn't looking.

He Lingchuan understood, and he didn't want to make a big fuss, since so many people were watching.

He stepped forward, a slight smile playing on his lips, and said in a relaxed tone, "She really didn't mean it, you can believe me. Besides, it was me who upset her, and she accidentally hurt herself in a moment of anger."

To prove he was alright, He Lingchuan poked the injured spot with his hand. He endured the pain and smiled, "It just looks serious, please don't blame her."

Shen Yanxi pursed her lips and looked at her mother with anticipation.

Ultimately, out of love for her daughter, Shen's mother didn't want to blame Shen Yanxi in front of so many people and make her lose face.

She tapped Shen Yanxi's forehead and sighed, "You really should treat Ling Chuan better."

"I understand, Mom. I will definitely treat him well."

Shen Yanxi made a solemn promise to her mother, and the matter was finally resolved.

While Shen's mother was entertaining guests, Shen Yanxi raised her hand to touch He Lingchuan's swollen lump, but he dodged her.

"I won't touch your wound. I'll check if there's any swelling around it."

"No need, I know what I'm doing."

As soon as Mother Shen left, He Lingchuan reverted to his previous aloof demeanor.

He turned to leave, but Shen Yanxi stopped him: "What do you mean by this? Do you think I should be grateful to you just because you helped me once? I didn't do it on purpose."

Shen Yanxi's self-esteem was hurt, and she felt resentful.

She ordered the porridge and apologized to him in front of her mother. What else could he be unhappy about? Why is he still throwing a tantrum here?

Shen Yanxi walked up to him, looking down at him condescendingly: "That's enough for you, my patience is limited."

"You think I'm throwing a tantrum?"

He Lingchuan looked puzzled. Seeing Shen Yanxi stunned, he sneered, "I will no longer waste my time and energy on you. Don't overthink it. I really don't want to have any more communication with you."

He wouldn't have wanted to come to this banquet if his mother hadn't come to him herself.

He Lingchuan left after he finished speaking, leaving Shen Yanxi behind.

Upon seeing Shen's mother and Zhou Mingyan, He Lingchuan nodded as a greeting.

"Lingchuan, wait a minute, I have something to tell you."

He Lingchuan was completely confused. He stopped and walked to Chen's mother's side.

Zhou Mingyan also joined in, afraid of missing anything.

Mother Shen opened her mouth, about to speak, but then fell silent again.

The two looked at Shen's mother with puzzled expressions, until she turned her head towards Zhou Mingyan and urged him, "Do you really enjoy listening to other people's family affairs?"

Shen's mother's tone was clearly displeased, and Zhou Mingyan belatedly realized that she was implying that he was an outsider.

His throat bobbed, but he couldn't utter a single word. Finally, he choked up and walked away.

With his back to Shen's mother, Zhou Mingyan sniffed, suppressing his grievances until he felt completely out of Shen's mother's sight before he started running.

Shen's mother actually called him an outsider?

The more he thought about it, the angrier he became, and his chest also started to ache.

Zhou Mingyan quickened his pace and bumped into Shen Yanxi, who was frowning.

The two looked up at each other simultaneously, and Shen Yanxi immediately noticed that Zhou Mingyan was acting strangely: "What's wrong? Did someone bully you?"

When Zhou Mingyan gets angry, his eyes turn red, and Shen Yanxi can tell at a glance that he has been wronged.

"nothing."

Zhou Mingyan pushed Shen Yanxi's hand away, deliberately keeping a certain distance from her.

What do you mean by that?

Shen Yanxi looked puzzled and somewhat hurt: "Did someone bully you?"

As Shen Yanxi was about to run over to settle accounts with him, she was stopped by Zhou Mingyan after taking only two steps.

His tone sounded very aggrieved, but the words that came out seemed to be a sense of relief: "Xixi, I'm afraid I'll never be able to become family with you in my entire life. I can wait, I can try to please you, but I can't get someone who doesn't like me to accept me. Our fate is probably coming to an end here."

His words plunged Shen Yanxi into panic, a fear of losing Zhou Mingyan again spreading through her.

Shen Yanxi grabbed his wrist, her nails digging into his flesh: "Did He Lingchuan say something? Did he tell my mother? You will definitely become my family, don't overthink it."

Zhou Mingyan curled his lips into a smile that looked utterly miserable: "Even if we can't be family, I will always support you."

Shen Yanxi shook her head: "I won't let you go."

Her eyes were red and swollen. She pulled Zhou Mingyan to go back, but as soon as she turned around, she bumped into He Lingchuan and Shen's mother, who were talking as they walked out.

She didn't care about anything else and grabbed Zhou Mingyan, demanding, "He Lingchuan, what exactly did you say to my mother? Why does she have such a strong prejudice against Mingyan?"
