Upon hearing this, Song Xizhi could hear the steady heartbeat of the man beside him.
Bang, bang bang.
His heart seemed to be beating faster and faster. His broad embrace was incredibly warm, conveying strength firmly and powerfully, as if it could shelter him from the wind and rain.
Song Xizhi clenched her teeth, tears streaming down her face, her whole body trembling.
But she merely sniffed, then closed her eyes tightly and forcefully pushed the man away.
The man felt her movements and seemed somewhat caught off guard. He staggered back two steps, his eyes, filled with passion, still carrying a hint of bewilderment.
But Song Xizhi gripped the jade pendant tightly in his hand.
She kept her eyes fixed on the man's face, her expression visibly sorrowful, yet she still resolutely held the jade pendant in her hand out the window.
It was late at night, quiet and a bit cold outside.
The moonlight shone on the back of her hand, and a gentle breeze caressed her wrist, causing the fine hairs on her arm to stand up.
“This jade pendant is extremely important to the person I share a bed with. If you don’t acknowledge that this jade pendant is yours, then you also don’t acknowledge that I am the person you share a bed with in the Marquis of Anding’s mansion.”
"Since you don't need these useless things, then let me do with them as I see fit."
Song Xizhi paused slightly, a hint of determination in his eyes, before continuing.
“The courtyard I’m in is on high ground. If I let go now, the jade pendant will fall and break. Aren’t you worried about that?”
The man simply stood there, staring at the jade pendant in Song Xizhi's hand, his eyes as deep as an ancient well, now churning with turbulent waves.
Song Xizhi's hand remained outstretched in the cold wind for a long time, but the man made no move.
She let go of her hand.
With a crisp sound, the jade pendant fell onto the stone and shattered. Song Xizhi closed his eyes briefly.
"So you really aren't the man I shared a bed with at the Marquis of Anding's residence?"
The man remained silent for a long time before finally managing a very difficult "hmm," a sound that seemed to come from his throat.
"After tonight, I will disappear. I hope you and your husband will be well and that my presence will not affect your relationship."
Upon hearing this, Song Xizhi suddenly laughed.
Her smile was radiant, stunning the dark night.
She simply pulled out the white jade hairpin that was diagonally inserted into her hair bun, held it firmly in her hand, and stretched it out the window again.
In an instant, her cascading black hair became disheveled, making her striking features appear even more alluring against the backdrop of the desolate black.
The man's eyes narrowed sharply, and in an instant, he took a step towards the windowsill.
Song Xizhi shook her head: "No, it's impossible for me and my husband to be together."
"Because of a promise I made when I was a child, I happily married him, and I hope to grow old with him."
"But now I realize that I don't understand him. He has secrets and barriers. It's like there's an invisible wall between us."
"I don't know what he's thinking, what he's doing, or whether he loves me or not. Maybe he's gentle to everyone, or maybe all his choices right now are forced."
Song Xi spoke each word clearly, staring into the man's bloodshot eyes, which were filled with darkness: "The tighter you hold onto something that no one cherishes, the more futile it becomes. Why not just let it go? What do you say?"
As soon as she finished speaking, a crystal tear rolled down her cheek.
She let go again, and the jade hairpin in her hand was about to fall.
The man's eyes changed, and he finally panicked.
He stared at the jade hairpin in Song Xizhi's hand, the woman's words still echoing in his ears.
Song Xizhi was truly too clever.
Even though he refused to budge, it couldn't dispel her doubts; she seemed to have already accepted this fact.
Her words just now further indicated that this was the jade hairpin that symbolized their love.
If she let go and the jade hairpin shattered, it would mean that she was truly heartbroken and that there was no possibility for them to be together again.
The man lost his composure.
He could no longer hesitate or deliberate. He rushed to the windowsill and grabbed Song Xizhi's wrist tightly, stopping her from doing anything further.
He leaned down and pressed down, his movements seemingly forceful, and pinned Song Xizhi against the windowsill.
The two were pressed tightly together, the man's strength was immense, and he subconsciously squeezed her wrist until it hurt.
But Song Xizhi was not alarmed. She simply stared into the man's eyes and asked, word by word, "Who exactly are you?"
The man stared at her with deep, dark eyes, his brows furrowed, his chest heaving violently; he was clearly furious.
"Song Xizhi, what exactly do you mean by this?"
"You couldn't bear to part with that jade pendant, so you made a fake one to fool me, pretending to smash it in front of me. But when it comes to this jade hairpin, are you willing to part with it?"
"Are you really willing to smash it?"
The man's voice still carried a hint of gritted teeth.
Song Xizhi smiled and nodded, her eyes glistening with tears: "Yes, the jade pendant that was broken just now was fake."
"The jade pendant is yours, your property, your entire fortune. Of course, I wouldn't bear to break it. But the jade hairpin is mine, it represents my feelings. If feelings are plentiful but useless, what does it matter if I break it?"
She had already determined that the man before her was the same man she had shared a bed with in the Marquis of Anding's mansion.
Everything she did tonight was just to get him to admit it.
Upon hearing this, the man stared intently into Song Xizhi's eyes, his anger gradually intensifying, brewing a storm.
