He paused, then added.
"Then I'll go back to cutting pig feed. My second brother is still waiting for me."
"Okay, stay with your second brother and don't wander off."
Su Qingzhi patted her shoulder and watched her small figure disappear through the door.
Suddenly, a gust of yellow sand swept up from outside the door, making the tattered cloth curtain outside the cave rustle loudly.
Su Qingzhi felt a pang of sadness.
She slowly sat back on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed), her fingers stroking the half-sewn patch.
If they were still in Shanghai, Panxing would be at school by now.

"Mom, what's wrong?"
Shen Cunpu's voice suddenly came from the doorway.
He had just returned from the fields, a hoe still on his shoulder, his trousers rolled up to his knees, covered in mud.
Upon hearing this, Su Qingzhi raised her hand and rubbed the corner of her eye.
"It's nothing, I just got some sand in my eyes, it hurts a little."
She paused, looked around to make sure no one was nearby, and then lowered her voice to speak.
"Just now, Liu Yuelan went to the cave next door and put something in the bucket. I saw her acting suspiciously, and she slipped in when no one was around, carrying a paper package with her."
Upon hearing this, Shen Cunpu immediately frowned, and slammed the hoe against the corner of the wall with a thud.
What is being dropped?
"Poisonous? Or something else?"
Su Qingzhi waved her hand, her expression solemn.
"I don't know, I didn't dare get too close. The powder dissolved as soon as I poured it in, but the water didn't seem to change. Let's wait for Qingzhi to come and check on things herself."
"Okay, she should be here soon."
Shen Cunpu nodded, walked to the window, lifted a corner of the tattered curtain, and looked towards the village entrance.
